4. Setup and Charging

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio.
  2. Slide the battery pack upwards until it clicks into place.
  3. To remove, press the battery release latch (if present) and slide the battery downwards.

4.2 Antenna Attachment

  1. Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is firmly seated.
  2. Do not overtighten.

4.3 Charging the Battery

The RT-493 features a 2600mAh Li-ion battery with a USB-C port, allowing for flexible charging options:

  • Using the Charger Base: Place the radio with the battery attached into the charger base. Ensure the charging contacts align. The status indicator light will show charging status.
  • Direct USB-C Charging: Connect a USB-C cable directly to the USB-C port on the battery pack. You can charge using a power adapter, computer, power bank, or car charger.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off and Volume Adjustment

Rotate the Power Switch/Volume Knob clockwise to turn the radio ON. Continue rotating to increase the volume. Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease volume and turn OFF the radio.

5.2 Channel Selection

Rotate the Channel Knob to select the desired communication channel (1-199). The selected channel number will be shown on the hidden LCD display.

5.3 Transmitting and Receiving

  • To Transmit: Press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) key. Speak clearly into the microphone. The TX indicator will light up.
  • To Receive: Release the PTT key. The RX indicator will light up when receiving a signal.

5.4 One-Key Frequency Copy

The RT-493 supports one-key frequency copying, allowing for quick setup with other radios:

  1. Place the RT-493 and the target radio within 1 meter distance.
  2. Activate the one-key copy function on the RT-493 (refer to specific key assignment in your radio's programming software if not default).
  3. The radio will quickly copy the frequency and CTCSS/DCS codes from the other radio, enabling immediate communication without manual programming.

5.5 VOX Function (Voice Operated Transmit)

To activate the VOX function, press and hold both the PTT key and Side Key 2 for approximately 3 seconds while powering on the radio. This allows for hands-free transmission when your voice is detected.

5.6 Scanning and Alarm Voice

  • Scanning: Briefly press Side Key 2 to activate the scanning function. The radio will scan through active channels.
  • Alarm Voice: A long press of Side Key 2 triggers an alarm voice.

5.7 Other Functions

  • High/Low Power Switch: Allows you to select between high (10W) and low output power to conserve battery or extend range.
  • Encryption, Scrambler, and Companding: These features enhance communication privacy and audio clarity.
  • Frequency Hopping: Utilizes smart chip technology to prevent crosstalk and ensure confidential communication.
  • CTCSS/DCS: Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System / Digital Coded Squelch for filtering unwanted signals.
  • TOT (Time-Out Timer): Prevents a user from transmitting for too long on a channel.
  • Battery Save: Automatically reduces power consumption when no signal is being received and no operations are being performed.
  • Low Power Alert: Notifies the user when the battery level is critically low.

6. Maintenance

6.1 General Care

  • Clean the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents.
  • Keep the radio dry. If it gets wet, wipe it thoroughly.
  • Avoid exposing the radio to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

6.2 IP67 Waterproof Rating

The Radtel RT-493 is IP67 rated, meaning it is dust-tight and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This makes it suitable for use in marine environments or other wet conditions.
