2. Safety Information

WARNING: To avoid possible electric shock, fire, or personal injury, please read all safety information before you use the product. Improper use can lead to severe injury or death.

  • Always ensure the multimeter is in good working condition before use. Inspect test leads for damage.
  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the multimeter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Always disconnect power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before performing resistance, continuity, diode, or capacitance measurements.
  • Do not use the multimeter if it operates abnormally. Protection may be impaired.
  • Do not operate the multimeter around explosive gas, vapor, or dust.
  • Use the proper terminals, function, and range for your measurements.
  • Replace the battery as soon as the low battery indicator appears to avoid incorrect readings.
  • Adhere to local and national safety codes.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The ZT-M1 requires two 1.5V AA batteries (not included). To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads from the input terminals.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw(s) on the battery cover.
  4. Remove the cover and insert the two 1.5V AA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
  5. Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw(s).

4.2 Connecting Test Leads

Always connect the black test lead to the COM (common) terminal. Connect the red test lead to the appropriate input terminal based on the measurement you intend to perform:

  • VΩHz: For voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance, and diode measurements.
  • mA μA: For low current (milliampere/microampere) measurements and battery testing.
  • 20A: For high current (ampere) measurements.

5. Operating Instructions

Before any measurement, ensure the test leads are correctly connected and the rotary switch is set to the desired function.

5.1 AC/DC Voltage Measurement

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black test lead to the COM terminal.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the 'V' (Voltage) position. The multimeter will typically auto-range and detect AC or DC. If manual selection is needed, press the 'SELECT' button.
  3. Touch the test probes to the points in the circuit where you want to measure voltage.
  4. Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

5.2 AC/DC Current Measurement

  1. IMPORTANT: To measure current, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit. Disconnect power to the circuit before connecting the multimeter.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal. Connect the red test lead to the mA μA terminal for low currents or the 20A terminal for high currents.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the 'A' (Ampere) position. Press 'SELECT' to choose AC or DC if necessary.
  4. Break the circuit and connect the test leads in series with the load.
  5. Apply power to the circuit and read the current value.

5.3 Resistance Measurement

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
  2. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black test lead to the COM terminal.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Ω' (Resistance) position.
  4. Touch the test probes across the component or circuit segment to measure resistance.
  5. Read the resistance value on the LCD display.

5.4 Capacitance Measurement

  1. Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before testing.
  2. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black test lead to the COM terminal.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Capacitance' position (often shared with frequency or diode).
  4. Touch the test probes across the capacitor terminals.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the LCD display.

5.5 Frequency Measurement

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black test lead to the COM terminal.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Hz' (Frequency) position.
  3. Touch the test probes to the points where you want to measure frequency.
  4. Read the frequency value on the LCD display.

5.6 Diode Test and Continuity

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  2. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black test lead to the COM terminal.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Diode/Continuity' position. Use 'SELECT' to switch between diode test and continuity.
  4. Diode Test: Place probes across the diode. A good diode will show a voltage drop in one direction and open circuit in the other.
  5. Continuity Test: Place probes across the circuit. A beep indicates continuity (low resistance).

5.7 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Detection

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the 'NCV' position.
  2. Move the top part of the multimeter near the conductor you want to test.
  3. If AC voltage is detected, the NCV indicator light will illuminate, and the buzzer will sound. The intensity of the sound and light may vary with voltage strength.

5.8 Temperature Measurement

  1. Connect the temperature probe (thermocouple) to the VΩHz and COM terminals, observing polarity.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the '°C/°F' (Temperature) position.
  3. Place the tip of the temperature probe on the object or area whose temperature you wish to measure.
  4. Read the temperature value on the LCD display. Press 'SELECT' to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type and rating. Always disconnect test leads and power before opening the case.
  • Storage: If the multimeter is not used for a long period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store in a cool, dry place.

7. Troubleshooting

If the multimeter is not functioning as expected, try the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Display/Faint Display: Check battery levels and replace if necessary. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
  • Incorrect Readings: Verify that the correct function and range are selected. Check test leads for damage or poor connection. Ensure the circuit is properly de-energized for resistance/continuity tests.
  • No Continuity Beep: Check if the continuity function is selected. Ensure test leads are making good contact.
  • Current Measurement Failure: Check and replace the fuse if blown. Ensure the multimeter is connected in series with the circuit.
  • NCV Not Working: Ensure the NCV function is selected. The NCV sensor needs to be close to the AC voltage source.

If problems persist, contact customer support.

9. User Tips

  • Auto-Ranging Convenience: The ZT-M1's auto-ranging feature simplifies measurements by automatically selecting the correct range. However, for faster readings on known values, manual ranging can be more efficient.
  • Backlight Usage: The display backlight is very useful in dimly lit environments. Remember to turn it off after use to conserve battery life.
  • NCV for Quick Checks: Use the NCV function for a quick and safe preliminary check for live wires before proceeding with contact measurements.
  • Data Hold: When taking measurements in hard-to-reach areas, use the Data Hold function to freeze the reading on the display for easier viewing.
  • Battery Life: Always carry spare AA batteries, especially for professional use, as the multimeter relies on them for all functions.
