Troubleshooting

Induction Range (IR) Series

TROUBLESHOOTING
This section of the manual contains troubleshooting information which helps the Certified Service Technician troubleshoot a Wolf Induction Range.
Induction Range
The induction range has two separate electronic systems, each with a separate control board. Access to the troubleshooting is determined by if the induction cooktop or the oven is having an issue.

Induction Cooktop
The generator and control board has seperate software that communicate between each other to control the induction cooktop. If a logic or programing issue is suspected the control board should be replaced first as it is the less expensive part.
On 36″ models the left generator is the controlling generator and contains most of the software and programming for the generators.
Connecting the unit to 120 VAC will cause an error E6. If the induction cooktop is to be used in Showroom mode, after the error occurs proceed with the steps to place the cooktop in Showroom mode.
Measuring current on the coil assemblies does not give reliable results, and is not recommend as a diagnostic tool.

Induction Range (IR) Oven
The IR oven displays error on the selector knob or the Electronic Control Housing (ECH). The IRoven has a relay board that receives command from the control to activate the oven components.

· TO AVOID ELECTRIC SHOCK, POWER TO THE UNIT MUST BE DISCONNECTED WHENEVER SERVICING AND/OR ACCESSING COMPONENTS.
· UNIT SURFACES AND COMPONENTS GET HOT DURING USE OF THE APPLIANCE.
· PULLING A UNIT FROM ITS INSTALLATION SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED BY AN CERTIFIED SERVICE TECHNICIAN OR INSTALLER.

· When working on the appliance and components, be careful handling sheet metal parts. They may have sharp edges.

Troubleshooting

Fan Test
Each generator board has a 12 VDC fan. It is not reliable to check the fan by measuring the resistance, it will not be consistant.
1. Turn the coil assembly on at Boost for each generator board. The fan starts as soon as in Boost. 2. Use a 9 volt battery to energize the fan. Black wire to negative and red wire to positive. 3. Assure the fan vent is not blocked. 4. There is no minimum distance to non-combustible surfaces below the cooktop. However, a structure too
close to the fan vents, or an appliance that is getting warm can affect the coil NTCsensors. If possible remove the structure from beneath the cooktop and test again.

HOT Indicator Stays On
One of the coil assembly NTC reading 50° C (122° F) or above causes the HOT indicator to come on.
1. Check coil assembly NTCtemperatures in Diagnostics. They should be consistant. A defective NTC reading higher than the actual temperature would require replacing that generator.
2. A warm coil temperature can be caused by heat on the coil assembly such as from direct sunlight or a hot pan sitting on the coil assembly.
3. Cycle unit power. 4. Assure fan is operating and fan vent is not blocked. 4. If no coil assembly NTC is reading 50° C (122° F) or above, replace the control board. A damaged control board
or stuck HOT indicator may cause the issue.

No Pan Detection
The pan detection system is an integral part of the generator. Pans without sufficent ferrous metal in the construction of the pan heat slowly, may cause burner or generator damage and cause error codes E6 or E47.
1. A magnet must stick to the bottom of the cookware and it is best if the magnet sticks across the entire bottom of the cookware.
2. Pans should be the same size as the coil assembly. Pans that are too large, or too small may not be sensed or not heat properly.
3. Cookware should be flat and smooth on the bottom, and have no patterns. 4. Check voltage to the cooktop. See error code E6.

RTD Testing
In diagnostic mode, the RTD temperature is shown in the display window of the selector knob. If the RTD is open, “Err 03” is shown in the display of the ECH. If the RTD is shorted, “Err 04” is shown in the display of the ECH. If the temperature displayed on the selector knob does not appear to be correct, the RTD can be ohmed out. At 75° F the resistance should be 1091 ohms.
Probe Testing
In diagnostic mode press PROBE key on the ECH. This switches the selector knob display to read the probe temperature. If the probe has not been inserted, “out” is shown as the probe temperature. If the probe is shorted, “Err 09” is shown in the display of the ECH. If the temperature displayed on the selector knob does not appear to be correct, the probe can be ohmed out. At 90° F the resistance should be 34,000 ohms.
