WAMPLER Cryptid Fuzz Pedal User Guide

WAMPLER Cryptid Fuzz Pedal - front page

The Cryptid is a fuzz pedal from the deepest, darkest depths of Brian Wampler’s imagination.

Input: from InstrumentWAMPLER Cryptid Fuzz Pedal - uses

Output: to Amplifier

Volume: Controls the total output volume. Turning clockwise increases.

Tone: Adjust the amount of high-end, turning clockwise will increase the high-end frequencies present.

Fuzz: Turning clockwise increases amount of fuzz.

Character: Adjusts bias and ‘sputter’.

Chime: Adjusts brightness. Up is bright, middle is dark, down is stock. This control is dependent on the position of the “fuzz” control, like the bright switch on an amp.

Tight: Adjusts bass response. Up is bass heavy, middle offers a tighter bass response, down is stock.

Power: This pedal was designed around the usage of a 9-18V DC power source. To avoid damage to the pedal, do not exceed 18V DC, do not use center pin positive adapters, and do not use AC power. Use only a 19 – 18V DC power source that is intended for guitar pedals. This pedal draws approximately 15mA at 9V and 30mA at 18V.

Tips ’n’ Tricks:

  • The character knob works like a bias control; turning it counterclockwise tightens, while clockwise loosens for a spitty, gated sound.
  • The chime switch adjusts highs before clipping and affects impedance. Middle gives no chime, bottom provides some, and top offers the most, similar to a presence control – with fuzz control all the way up it has no effect, the lower the fuzz control, the more the effect.
  • The tight switch adjusts bass levels; middle is the least, down is moderate, and top is the most bass.
  • The tone control is post-clipping and operates separately from the chime switch.
  • For best response, avoid using buffered bypass pedals before this one. Settings are flexible, so adjust to suit your rig and preferences.
  • This is an original fuzz circuit featuring NPN, PNP transistors, and FETs.

Some of Brian’s suggested settings – use these as a starting point to find your perfect tone.
