FAQ
Q: What should I do if the pump is not priming properly?
A: Make sure the priming cap is sealed tightly to avoid air
leaks. Additionally, ensure all connections are airtight for
optimal suction performance.
Q: How often should I change the oil in the pump?
A: Refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for oil change
intervals. It is recommended to regularly check and change the oil
as per maintenance requirements.
Q: Can I use different intake hoses with the Turtledrain
setup?

THE BIG BOY TURTLEDRAIN SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
SAFETY AND PRIMING FIRST
IMPORTANT: The pump does not come filled with oil. You must fill it with oil before first use, per the manufacturer’s instructions. Oil is included in the manufacturer’s box. Never run the pump dry. Always operate on level ground and use proper PPE. For a quick demo, see the QR code at the end of these instructions.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION
1. Set Up the Discharge Hose First
Inside the gas pump’s manufacturer box, you’ll find two discharge hose options. Choose one based on your site layout and connect it to the discharge port of the pump. Run the hose to a suitable drainage location (storm drain, downhill grade, etc.).
2. Install the Wye Adapter on the Inlet
At the 1.5″ suction port, thread on the wye adapter included with your unit. This splits the suction into two 1″ ports for dual intake. The wye may also include optional shut-off valves (if selected at purchase), which allow you to: – Close one side when draining from a single Turtledrain – Isolate suction if one pond drains faster than the other
3. Connect Intake Hoses
We supply you with two 1″ intake hoses specifically for the Turtledrain connection. Attach each hose to the wye adapter’s ports using the included clamps or fittings. Ensure every connection is fully airtight for optimal suction performance.
4. Connect Hoses to Turtledrains
Point the hose fittings downward into the center port on the Turtledrain. Twist counterclockwise to tighten — the threading is reverse (lefty-loosey to tighten). If unsure, refer to the demo video (QR code at the end). Make sure both hoses are clamped securely and connections are airtight.
5. Position the Turtledrains
Place each unit in the deepest part of the ponded area. Ensure the Turtledrain lies flat with full contact against the surface.
6. Prime the Pump
Open the priming cap on the pump. Fill the chamber completely with water, wait a few seconds, then top it off again. Reseal the priming cap tightly — even a small air leak will kill suction.
7. Start the Pump
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operating the pump, including proper throttle, choke, and startup steps. Do not run the pump dry.
8. Monitor the Discharge
You’ll see initial sputtering at the discharge hose — this is normal. After a few seconds, a steady stream of water will discharge once the system is fully primed. If one pond drains first, close that side’s shutoff valve to keep suction consistent from the active drain.
9. Shut Down
Turn off the pump when: – Water drops below 1/8″, or – The pond appears to be drained and no longer drawing in water This prevents dry running and protects the life of your pump.

Note: The above QR code links to a demo using the Skipper model (our smaller “little brother” unit). However, the pump operation and hose setup are identical with the exception of using the WYE adapter. Please refer to the video to ensure proper installation — including how to spin on the Turtledrains correctly, and the correct orientation for the intake hoses, discharge hoses, and system direction.
