GETTING STARTED

Your Tabcat could not be easier to set up or use. Follow these steps and you’ll be able to start tracking your tagged cat or kitten in no time at all.tabcat-Cat-Tracker-Handset-fig (2)

REGISTER A TAG

  • To activate and register, pull out the white strip on the Tag. It will beep twice and the red light will flash twice.
  • Place the Tag you wish to register next to the Handset, making sure all other Tags have been moved away.
  • Make sure the Handset is switched on (red status light will flash when ON).
  • Select one of the buttons on the front of the Handset to assign the Tag to. Hold the button down for 3 seconds. The Handset will beep. Release button.
  • Tabcat will now start registration and the status light will flash rapidly. Tag will complete registration process.
  • Once registered, the Tag and Handset will beep and flash once.
  • Repeat process for up to 4 Tags, assigning each Tag to a different button. (Tags can only be registered to one button and handset at a time.) Each of the four Tags when being located will beep differently to help identification.

ATTACH TAG TO COLLAR

Insert the Tag into the splashproof case by pushing it through the hole in the back. Then attach directly onto your pet’s collar by threading the collar through the two openings at either end of the silicone case.tabcat-Cat-Tracker-Handset-fig (3)

WARNING: INGESTION HAZARD

Tag includes batteries. Only use a tag with the Silicone cases provided. See inside back cover for full details.

SWITCHING ON / OFF

  • ON
    • Hold in the right hand side button (see Button Guide) for 2 seconds.
    • The Handset will then bleep and all the lights flash.
    • Small status light will flash whilst on.
    • The Handset will automatically power down after 40 seconds if left idle.
  • OFF
    • Hold the right-hand side button for 2 seconds. Tabcat will beep and turn off.

VOLUME

Press the left-hand side button to select from three volume settings; Off, Low, or High. An audio beep will sound when pressed indicating the current volume level.

TIPS

  • If a locate button is pressed with no Tag assigned to it, an error tone will sound and the status lights will blink rapidly. To register a Tag to this button, complete the steps ‘REGISTER A TAG’.
  • When inserting a battery inside the Tag, you must listen to the amount of beeps the Tag emits. If it beeps once – It’s registered, if it beeps twice – It’s unregistered. If there are no beeps – the battery is flat or hasn’t been put in correctly.
  •  Range will vary depending on location and environment. Locating from a high vantage point could help improve your range. Training your cat to come home using Tabcat could help to avoid a lengthy search.
  • If you can’t pick up your cat’s signal, try going out of your cat’s normal territory. It can also be worth riding or driving in a car while searching to cover more ground.

LOCATING – SEARCHING FOR A PET

LOST

  • Press and hold down the ON button for 2 seconds until the Tabcat beeps and lights flash.
  • Press the button that your cat / Tag is allocated to.
  • Tabcat will beep and the status light will flash rapidly as it’s searching for the Tag.
  • When a Tag is detected, the locating lights will light up and the audio will start.
  •  With the Handset in your hand and pointing forward, turn around slowly, completing a full circle.
  • As you point in the right direction and then move nearer to your cat, the audio pitch and frequency of beeps will increase, and the lights on the Handset change from red to amber and then green, the closer you get.
  • Once a circle has been completed, face in the direction of the strongest audio and visual signal and walk in that direction.
  • When you see three green lights, the Tag is very close by.
  • To guide you right in, the Tabcat now changes to ‘zooming in’ mode (pictured).
  • As you get closer in (zooming in) mode, amber then red lights also illuminate and the audio pitch increases.tabcat-Cat-Tracker-Handset-fig (4)

FOUND

  • To stop a search, press the ON/OFF button, or the locate button, your Tag is allocated to.

LOW BATTERY

LOW BATTERY WARNING

  • HANDSET – When switched on, the small status light will flash twice per second. If the handset stops working as expected, replace the battery.
  • TAG – Will beep and the red light will flash when battery is getting low.

LOCATING TIPS

  • Place the Tag on a surface and practice locating it a few times to get a feel for how it works.
  • If you are ever unsure of which direction to go in, slowly repeat a full 360° circle and then go in the direction with the strongest signal strength.
  • Strongest signal is displayed when the Tabcat is pointing directly at the Tag. Try pointing the Handset up and down as the Tag/your cat could be upstairs or downstairs, up a tree or hiding under a bush.
  • If you are close to a wall whilst getting a strong signal, check the room next door.
  • Try switching the volume off on the Handset when you are close, to mute and listen out for the beeps on the Tag.
  • If no signal is displayed, try moving position to a different area and repeat the process. (for tips.)
  • Try training your cat to come home.

The Locate button on your Handset activates a small beep on the tag. Activate a search just before meal times until your cat or kitten associates the beeps on the tag attached to their collar with food. Use this signal to train your cat to come home on demand.

RANGE GUIDELINES

Range will vary greatly depending on where the Tag is used and what it’s attached to. If higher up and with a clear line of sight (such as a cat in a tree), items can be found in excess of 150m / 500 feet. If locating through doors and walls range will be significantly less. Actual range may differ significantly as performance is affected by type of application and the environment it’s used in. If no signal is picked up and displayed, just walk whilst locating. As soon as you’re in range Tabcat will pick up the signal and guide you in.

BATTERIES

  • Handheld: If the Tabcat does not power up, work correctly or lights are faint, replace the battery using 1 x CR2032 placing in the battery compartment ‘+’ side up. Battery cover slides down to open.
  • Screw on lid? (Screwdriver packed on right hand side by tags under foam.)
  • Off: Undo screw fully then with back of handset facing down gently pull screw if needed (so it doesn’t catch) and then slide down to open.
  • On: Put the lid on so only the screw section is just outside the case. With back of handset face down gently pull out screw if needed then slide lid shut and tighten screw. Screw is designed not to come out fully.

Tags:

  • Put your thumbnail, or a flat tool, at the end of the Tag by the lanyard hole, into the split line (line going around the middle of the Tag).
  • Keeping your thumbnail/flat tool in the split line move it around to the middle of the long side. The Tag will pop open.
  • Replace batteries with x2 Silver Oxide GP389, SR1130 or similar for best performance, keeping the plus side up nearest the lanyard hole and plus side down furthest from the lanyard hole.
  • Replace the lid by putting one long side in first then pushing shut. If the battery is correctly inserted, the Tag will beep when case is closed.
  • To test the batteries, open the Tag, if it does not beep and flash – replace the batteries.
  • If the Tag beeps once, it’s registered. If it beeps twice it’s unregistered.

UNREGISTER A TAG

Once a Tag has been registered, only that button can be used to locate it. To move the Tag to another Handset or button you will first need to unregister it.

  • To Unregister:
    • Place the Tag to be unregistered next to the Handset. Moving all other Tags away.
    • Hold down the volume button and at the same time press the button that the Tag is registered to for 3 seconds.
    • Tabcat will beep – let go of the buttons.
    • Tabcat will now beep twice, the status light will flash rapidly and start to unregister Tag.
    • To confirm a successful unregistration, the Tag and the Tabcat will beep twice.

DELETE A TAG

If a Tag has been damaged, or lost, the Tag can be deleted permanently, enabling another Tag to be registered to that button.

  • To Delete:
    • Hold down the volume button and at the same time press the button that the Tag is registered to for 7 seconds or until the Tabcat beeps twice – then let go of the buttons.
    • Tabcat will beep and LED will flash.
    • To confirm a successful deletion, Tabcat will beep and LED will flash.

  1. Hand held tracker does not consistently work. Get error tone, have turned it off, replaced battery. Might work but half the time it does not still get error tone

Janet Olinger asks Hand held tracker does not consistently work. Get error tone, have turned it off, replaced battery. Might work but half the time it does not still get error tone
    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

Why does my Tabcat handheld tracker consistently emit an error tone and fail to work even after replacing the battery?

    Answer

According to the Tabcat User Guide, an error tone and rapidly blinking status lights typically occur when a locate button is pressed that has no Tag assigned to it. If you have already replaced the battery and the issue persists, please try the following steps:

    • Re-register the Tag: The error tone suggests the handset may have lost the registration for that specific button. To fix this, place the Tag next to the Handset (ensure other Tags are away), hold down the desired button for 3 seconds until the Handset beeps, and wait for the status light to flash rapidly to complete the registration.
    • Check Tag Battery: When inserting a battery into the Tag, listen for the beeps. One beep means it is registered; two beeps mean it is unregistered; no beeps mean the battery is flat or inserted incorrectly.
    • Handset Battery Orientation: Ensure the CR2032 battery in the Handset is placed with the '+' side facing up.
    • Low Battery Warning: If the small status light on the Handset flashes twice per second when switched on, the Handset battery is low.

Note: The manufacturer, Loc8tor Ltd / Tabcat UK, has recently announced they have ceased trading, which may affect your ability to receive direct technical support or warranty replacements.

🇬🇧 Jackie and Bob asks What is the exact frequency on which the Tabcat operates, so that we can track it with a secondary receiver.
What is the output power of the transmitter?
    Thank you
    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

What is the operating frequency and output power of the Tabcat Cat Tracker?

    Answer

The provided user guide for the Tabcat Cat Tracker does not list the specific operating frequency or the exact transmitter output power in its technical specifications. However, the manual does provide the FCC identification numbers for the devices, which can be used to look up detailed technical filings:

    • Handheld Handset FCC ID: TUW-PH
    • Homing Tag FCC ID: TUW-BT

While the manual mentions the device complies with FCC Part 15 and RF exposure requirements (rule part §2.1093), it focuses on operational range, stating that the device has a range of up to 150 meters (500 feet) in clear line of sight. Please note that the manufacturer, Loc8tor Ltd / Tabcat UK, has recently ceased trading, which may limit further technical support from the original brand.
