Supercharger Active Bypass – Boost Control System

Ilani Muhimu: Please read this document thoroughly before beginning installation.

The SmoothBoost actuator must be mounted to the supercharger only after all wiring steps are complete. This ensures the unit can be properly adjusted while the vehicle is powered.

PART 1: WIRING

    Onyo Muhimu: Never handle this wire while the unit is powered on or while the 14-pin connector is plugged into the controller. Leave the main connector unplugged until all other wiring is complete. NEVER apply more than 5 volts

Drive-by-Wire cars: Connect to the accelerator pedal position sensor (APPS) 0-5V signal

  • Blue Wire-Boost Cut

Part 2: Actuator Installation

When wiring is done, plug in the actuator and power up the system. Play with the throttle pedal a bit to get a feel for how it moves before bolting it to the supercharger.

If the actuator can’t hit its target, the motor can overheat. To prevent that, the unit has a built-in safety: if it pulls max current for a few seconds, it shuts down. It’ll come back online after cycling power.

Hatua

  1. Take pictures or notes of the stock vacuum actuator’s open/closed angles. Remove it. Install the supplied 10-32. to ball socket adapter on the bypass valve lever.
  2. Mount the actuator to the supercharger using the original bolts and the included washers. Leave the bolts a turn loose for now. Snap the actuator rod onto the ball socket. Then move on to adjustment.

SmoothBoast works like a drive-by-wire throttle for your bypass valve. It needs to go from the idle/cruise position (retracted) to the WOT/full boost position (extended)

  1. With the unit powered off, pull the actuator rod out by hand to see where the boost/valve-closed position is.
  2. To extend the actuator for setup, either: Ground the Gray calibration wire OR Have a helper holt the throttle at WOT
  3. Slide the actuator toward the bypass shaft until the butterfly valve is fully closed.
  4. Tighten the mounting bolts. Use washers keep the bracket from shifting as you tighten.
  5. Disconnect the calibration wire and power off the unit
  6. Move the linkage by hand through its full range make sure it doesn’t bind or hit anything.

Kumbuka: The bypass valve should rotate about 80% if it goes further, it may start to close back down in opposite direction.

Adjusting Travel

  • The unit ships with minimum travel

  • Or, remove the cap with a #0 Phillips and adjust with a 5.5mm socket.
  • Any time you change travel, repeat the adjustment procedure.

  • The bracket should stay solid if it flexes, something is binding, and the unit may trip protection mode

Cap unased vacuum ports and secure wires/hoses away from heat and moving parts
Keep an eye on your AFRs-tuning is highly recommended since the engine will see new load areas

  • Protection Mode-if the actuator shuts down, it’s usually from binding or mis adjustment. Redo the adjustment procedure.

To clarify how a bypass system works:

  • Extended actuator bypass closed → boost on
  • Retracted actuator bypass open bypass airflow for cruising/efficiency
