Design and Function
Intended Use
The Height Adjustable Back Adapter gives clinicians and facilities the ability to quickly change the height of a back support on a wheelchair, or remove and reinstall the back support, without requiring the use of tools. A small lever on either side of the back adapter releases the back support to slide along a sturdy dual rail guide and the adapter can lock at one-inch intervals, or be completely removed and then replaced on the guide. This allows a single chair to be quickly adapted for use by multiple clients and removes the down-time normally associated with adjusting the height of a back support.
Features
- Tool-less height adjustment of the back support in one-inch increments or the back support can be quickly removed or reinstalled using the same levers.
- Accommodates back support widths from 12 to 28 inches.
- Adjustment levers can be locked with a set screw to reduce the risk of improper back support adjustments.
WARNING
Incorrect installation of the adapter interface or its accessories may cause damage to the hardware and/or injury to the user.
Compatibility
The Height Adjustable Back Adapter is compatible with Quantum TB3/TB4-type wheelchair systems.
CAUTION
The use of improper tools may cause damage to the device. Under- or overtightening fasteners can cause components to fail, or cause discomfort for the user. The tools required to install additional accessories are detailed in the manuals provided with those accessories.

Installation Instructions
Mounting the Bracket to the Back Adapter
- The holes in the Mounting Bracket, 45º Backs (A) are identified by the number cut into the bracket beneath the screw holes. Select the holesin each bracket that match the width of your back support.
- Align the holes in the bracket with the threaded holes in the Dual Rail Guide (B).
- Insert the M6 x 1 x 12mm Button Head Screws with Nylon (F4) through an M6 Flat Washer (F3) and the mounting bracket through the holes chosen in Step 1 and thread them into the dual rail guide.
- Tighten them to the torque value specified on Page 2.
NOTE: The holes for 17″ and 18″ are aligned horizontally on the small mounting bracket, but are further apart vertically.
To install the mounting bracket for 17″ back supports, line up the top hole on the mounting bracket with the inner (higher) hole in the dual rail guide. The lower hole should line up with the inner hole on the bottom of the dual rail guide as well.
To install the mounting bracket for 18″ back supports, line up the lower hole in the bracket with the outer hole on the dual rail guide.
Tighten the screws according to the values listed on Page 2.
Mounting the Back Support to the Brackets
- When the Mounting Bracket, 45º Backs (A) are both installed, the back support will fit between them and the three slots in the mounting brackets will line up with the slot in the back support designed for mounting hardware. Align the Track Nut, 6″ (C) with the three slots in each mounting bracket and the slot in the Back Support.
- Insert an M6 x 1 x 16mm Button Head Screw (F2) through an M6 Flat Washer (F3) and then through the mounting bracket and back support. Thread the button head screw into the track nut.
- Repeat Step 2 for the other two button head screws.
- Center the back on the mounting brackets and tighten the screws according to the values listed on Page 2.
Mounting the Back Adapter to the Chair
The chair back will have three studs and a threaded hole to accommodate the height adjustable back adapter.
- Align the three keyholes in the back adapter with the three studs on the chair’s back.
- Insert the studs through the larger bottom of the keyholes and slide it down to secure the narrower top of the keyholes on the three studs.
- Place the thumbscrew in the bottom left hole and thread it into the threaded hole in the chair back. Tighten it to secure the back adapter on the power chair.
Removal/Replacement
Removal of the Height Adjustable Back Adapter is the reverse of the installation procedure listed on the previous page.
- Remove the thumbscrew securing the adapter to the chair back.
- Lift the back to free the keyholes from the studs and remove the back.
- To replace the back, place the keyholes on the studs and slide the adapter towards the seat.
- Insert the thumbscrew into the lower left hole and thread it into the back to secure the adapter in place.
Adjustment Instructions
Height Adjustment
The height of the back support in relation to the chair back can be set without tools, using the red latches located on the side of the Dual Rail Guide (B).
- Lift the two Latches (G) until they reach the horizontal orientation, as shown in the image. In this position, the pins that secure the height setting are retracted and the back support is free to slide up or down the rails that are mounted on the Quantum Base Plate (D).
- Move the back support up or down to the desired position. The back is adjustable in one-inch increments.
- Release the Latches (G) to the vertical position. This will release the pins to latch into the slots cut into the rails and lock the back support in position. NOTE: Make sure the pins find a slot to lock into by moving the back support up or down in the desired direction until the pins click into slots. When the pins find a slot to go into, the latch will snug against the dual rail guide.
Set Screw Locking Mechanism
The Latch Assemblies (G) have set screws that allow them to be locked in position, preventing further height adjustment without tools. Subsequent height adjustments will require the set screws to be loosened to allow the latches to retract the pins.
- Using a hex wrench, loosen the set screw until the latch mechanism will retract the pin.
- Make the required height adjustment and release the latches. Lock the pins into slots.
- Tighten the set screws to lock out further tool-less adjustment.
