Setup & Basic Use
- Mount the commModule MBP Evaluation Kit hardware as required for your application. The commModule MBP itself is surface mountable and single-sided with a minimum footprint.
- To access internal interfaces: unscrew two screws from the top and carefully remove the top cover.
- Connect external interfaces:
- Fieldbus: connect the polarity-independent fieldbus to the 3-pol screw connector (Pin 1 and Pin 2 reserved for fieldbus; Pin 3 for cable shield).
- HART/Modbus: connect using the Phoenix mini combicon connector; use the pin assignment for RXD/TXD/RTS/CTS and power rails as described below.
- Configure jumper-dependent behavior: review and set jumpers for shield/capacitor options, current limiter enable/disable (X204), user boot mode (X205), protocol select (X206), simulate enable (X207), and 6V2-out select (X209).
- Verify LED behavior: when the FF stack is executed, LED L1 (green) indicates token ring status (lit in token ring mode); LED L2 is user-programmable.

Scope of delivery
- The Evaluation Kit consists of the commModule MBP board with minimum footprint, packed with two interface connectors into a box with LED and removable cover.
CommModule MBP Evaluation Kit
- The commModule MBP is a surface-mountable, single-sided communication module with minimum footprint. It is mounted on a carrier board which exhibits internal and external interfaces along with additional circuitry like EMC protection and current limitation.
CAUTION
- The commModule MBP Evaluation Kit must not be used in hazardous areas.

Current limiter circuit on 6V2 output
- The 6V2 output of X208 incorporates an output current limitation circuit. This circuit is used to limit the inrush current into any circuitry that is connected to the 6V2 power rail. The current limit is set to 16mA. The bus current used by the commModule MBP has to be set accordingly in the commScripter data. The delivered setting for the commModule MBP is 26 mA.
Note At present, the 3V15 output does not feature an output current limit circuit.
For reference, see the current output limitation circuit below:
Programming connector
Connect Renesas E1 emulator for flash programming and debugging on connector X202 as shown below:

External interfaces
The commModule-MBP Evaluation-Kit exhibits following external interfaces:

Fieldbus
- The polarity-independent fieldbus interface connects the fieldbus to a 3-pol screw connector, where Pin 1 and Pin 2 are reserved for fieldbus, and Pin 3 for the cable shield.
Connector:
- Phoenix Mini Combicon type: MC 1:5/3-STF-3:81
HART/Modbus
Connector: Phoenix mini combicon type: MC 1.5/6-STF-3:81

LED
- The two LEDs L1 and L2 (both red/green) are visible through LED pipes on the front cover.
- When the FF stack is executed L1 (green) indicates the token ring status. It is lit when the device is in token ring mode. L2 is user-programmable.
Electrical specifications
Operating conditions
- Unless otherwise noted, all specifications apply over the specified operating temperature.
- The normal operating temperature range from -40°C to + 85°C.
Input and output
- Digital port input/output specifications (HART):
- Signals RXD, TXD, RTS, CTS
- With Vcc = 3.2V± 4%

Output power specification (HART):
- Signals 3V_OUT, 6V2_OUT
- The power budget to supply a connected system from fieldbus is limited. It depends on the rated current drawn from the fieldbus, which is adjustable in software from 10mA to 26mA (Pomax = approx. 80mW). This power budget is available in sum on two power rails.

Fieldbus
- Powered from fieldbus 9V to 32V.
- Physical layer according to IEC 61158-2 types 1 and 3 voltage mode, 31.25kBit/s.
- Rated current of commModule MBP adjusted to In = 10mA up to 26mA.

Troubleshooting
- No/incorrect fieldbus behavior: confirm the fieldbus and HART/Modbus connector wiring using the documented pin assignments (RXD/TXD/RTS/CTS and power rails) and verify protocol selection via jumper X206 (Profibus PA selected vs. FF selected).
- 6V2 power rail current limiting issues: check jumper X204 settings for the 6V2 current limiter circuit. The 6V2 output includes an output current limitation circuit intended to limit inrush current; the current limit is set to 16 mA, and the bus current used by the commModule MBP must be set accordingly in the commScripter data. The delivered setting is 26 mA.
- LED indicators not matching expectations: ensure the FF stack is executed to get L1 (green) token ring status indication. Remember L2 is user-programmable.
- Enclosure access required: if you need to inspect or adjust internal interfaces or jumpers, open the enclosure by unscrewing two screws from the top and removing the top cover.
