The guide distinguishes a four-letter prefix plus six digits used in 1971–October 2004 from the later plant/year/month/year prefix and six-digit sequence.

Serial guidance and coverage

Look for the model/serial data-plate sticker on the exterior or inside the unit; the guide does not give one universal location.

  • Serial dates and format matches do not establish current warranty coverage, purchase date, authenticity or ownership.
  • A missing equipment records result does not establish an invalid serial number; manufacturer and model coverage vary.
  • The pre-2004 month table omits December while the newer table includes N=December. Preserve year ambiguity and retain the existing verified York decoder rules rather than replacing them with an incomplete guide table.

  • Manufacture date is distinct from installation, purchase and warranty start dates.
  • The date code does not identify a full model, capacity or configuration. Enter the separate model from the rating plate for manual search.
  • Repeated J-N historical year codes retain both candidate years. Older two-letter family does not encode a month.
  • Do not apply the ten-character residential pattern to full SAP chiller serials; JCI SI0418 separately documents that longer family.

York historical four-letter serial, 1979-2004

Manufacturer chart reprinted by York distributor; before Oct6,2004. J-N repeat in1979-83 and2000-04; both documented years remain possible. Older two-letter code requires its own rule. Exact Oct6 cutover cannot be proven from month-only date.

York-family HVAC: split year and month letter

After Oct6,2004, year is assembled from characters2 and4, month is character3 (I,J omitted). Manufacturer chart gives N0L4123456 = October2004. JCI SI0418 is chiller-scoped and corroborates date-code letters; it must not be used to force every chiller into this 10-character residential layout.

York/JCI chillers: SAP plant and split-year serial

Four-character SAP plant ID, split year at positions 5 and 7, month at 6, and seven-character global sequence. SI0418 explicitly decodes 0A4 = January 2004 and1D2 = April 2012. A hidden barcode (S) is not part of the 14-character value; do not strip arbitrary leading letters.2004 is a conservative reviewed floor, not a manufacturer-declared introduction. Plant names are manufacturer labels, not exact factory coordinates.

Confirm the equipment is a York/JCI chiller using the full 14-character SAP serial-number scheme in SI0418 Figure 2. A matching shape or York brand name alone does not establish this scheme.

York/JCI chillers: Mapics repeating-year/application serial

York/JCI chiller, electrical-panel or compressor Mapics scheme explicitly confirmed against SI0418 Figure 1; not a universal residential four-letter prefix.

The chiller chart repeats year letters every 21 years and includes manufacturer/component codes. Preserve all documented candidate years; R is 1985/2006 (2027 is future as of review). The suffix is opaque here: basic units and compressors use it differently, so an exact day is not inferred. New 2026 primary table corroborates years through 2026; previous four-letter residential rule remains separate and unchanged.

Confirm a York/JCI chiller or its identified component using SI0418 Figure 1 Mapics numbering. Do not choose this simply because an old residential serial has four leading letters.

Reading your result

York lookup questions

Why does the year code match more than one year?

Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.

Does the serial identify my exact model?

Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.

Can I share the result?

After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
