Check a documented system

What’s on the rating plate?

Consumer and business devices; official services vary by product and country.

Spaces and dashes are accepted. Check O/0 and I/1, and keep any leading zeros.

Checks ENERGY STAR model records and searches manuals separately from the serial. Certification records do not establish this unit’s manufacture date.

Known product context (optional)

Choose a system only when it matches the product family and its documentation. A purchase year or a manual’s publication date does not establish a manufacturing date.

Where to find the numbers.

Use the label on the main unit, not a separate component, accessory or shipping barcode.

HP laptops and desktops

Look for
Serial number
Label location
Product label, BIOS/system information or HP Support Assistant. Supported laptops: Fn+Esc; supported desktops: Ctrl+Alt+S.
Format / what to enter
Labels may use Serial NO., S/N or SN.

Product NO./P/N is the model or configuration identifier, not the unique serial.

HP printers and Chromebooks

Look for
Serial number
Label location
Printer product label or support app; Chromebook sign-in screen Alt+V.
Format / what to enter
Preserve the full serial; location differs by model.

Example ESB2A00207: countryES, revisionB, year 2, monthA, unit sequence00207.

Single-digit year requires decade context. This is a historic printer format, not the modern HP PC or all-printer format.

Scope matters

Supported formats
and historical limits.

  • A product name or series printed on the front may cover multiple configurations.
  • HP may require a product number in addition to serial and country of purchase.
  • No universal HP date decoder verified. Only the documented historic printer format is decoded with model and decade context; warranty dates are separate.

Research reviewed October 16, 2026. This independent tool applies published rules and retains unresolved years and model candidates.

Historic HP drafting and DesignJet printer serial

Only HP7586B and DesignJet750C(E/AO-size), as documented by HP. Requires matching model and explicit selection of this historic printer format; never infer the format for other HP products.

The year is one digit, so the decade needs independent model/history context. HP gives ESB2A00207 as October 1992. The prose calls the revision character numeric but its own example usesB, so preserve the printed character without asserting it must be numeric. OnlyUS/ES country examples are mapped; other country codes need separate evidence.

Confirm this is the documented HP7586B or DesignJet750C(E/AO-size) historic printer format. It does not apply to modern HP PCs or all printers.

HP lookup questions

Why does the year code match more than one year?

Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.

Does the serial identify my exact model?

Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.

Can I share the result?

After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
