PRODUCT INFORMATION
The AS09 is a Rudder Feedback Sensor designed for seamless integration into an existing NMEA 2000 network using the included 5-meter drop cable.
This sensor converts the rudder’s angular movement into a digital signal, which is transmitted across the NMEA 2000 network. The data provided by the AS09 can be utilized by autopilot systems, chart plotters, and multi-function displays (MFDs) to enhance navigation and control. Hosting a powerful ±70° measurement range with a precision of ±0.5°, the AS09 is an essential piece of equipment to aid in smoother sailing, precise movement, and to prevent overcompensation when manoeuvring. The AS09 has been tested and designed for use within harsh marine environments, to enable the sailor to navigate the waters safely, in the knowledge that the AS09 will keep you in control.

INSTALLATION KEY POINTS:
To ensure optimal performance and proper operation, consider the following guidelines when mounting the AS09:

  • Disconnect the NMEA 2000 cable from the backbone before installation.
  • Ensure the mounting location is flat, stable, and within 150mm to 345mm of the rudder arm.
  • The centre point of the AS09 must be in line with the rudder post. The AS09 must also be at the same height as the rudder arm.
  • Verify that the AS09 has unrestricted movement throughout its ±70° range.
  • Securely fit the drop cable to prevent any trip hazards.
  • Ensure that all mounting screws and linkage bolts are tightly fastened.
  • Attach the linkage to each arm at an equal distance from the respective centre lines of the units. Failure to do so may result in rudder feedback alarms.

AS09 must be installed, ensuring the central position (verify with alignment marks) aligns with the central position of the rudder tiller arm. Failure to do so may result in rudder feedback alarms.QUARK-ELEC-NMEA-2000-Rudder-Feedback-Sensor-fig- (4)Warning: Before proceeding with any installation works, it is imperative that all devices are disconnected from their power source and that the power source is switched off. INSTALLATION

Mounting: Consider your location…

  • The key points mentioned previously must be carefully considered.
  • Ensure that both the AS09 linkage and rudder arm have full unrestricted movement for the entire range.
  • Make sure the 5 meter drop cable for the AS09 is able to reach a powered NMEA 2000 backbone without causing strain to the cable or a trip hazard.

Mounting the AS09

  • MEASURE TWICE, DRILL ONCE.
  • Once a suitable location has been identified, mark the location for your pilot holes, using the outer slots as a guide. Mount the device using the supplied hardware.

Securing the linkage

  • MEASURE TWICE, DRILL ONCE.
  • Rotate the helm so that the rudder tiller arm is in its central position. Do the same for the AS09, using the alignment marks to do so.
  • The linkage must be mounted at each end, equal distance from the centre of the unit and rudder. (Reference A in the figure). The lever on the unit has a range of mounting holes to enable the most direct connection between the two arms. Once a hole on the feedback arm has been chosen, measure the distance from the hole to the centre of the unit and mark this on the rudder arm at the measured distance. Drill and tap this hole and attach the linkage.

Before first use.

  • Tighten both the mounting screws for the AS09 and the linkage.
  • Before powering up the unit and vessel, rotate the helm to ensure there is smooth and free movement between all connection points. Ensure to turn the helm within its full operational window to ensure the installation has been done correctly.

Warning: Please ensure that all safety precautions and protective equipment are adhered to and used at all times during the installation process. Quark-elec is not liable for any harm or injury caused during the installation process.
