INTRODUCTION

What can I use my Philips SmartClean System for?

If you are curious about the functionality of your Philips SmartClean System please read further on.

Uses of the Philips SmartClean System

The Philips SmartClean System can be used to charge, clean and lubricate your Philips Shaver. The SmartClean Plus (model number 5.2) also comes with a drying program.

The Philips SmartClean 5.1 system is compatible with all Philips shavers in Series 7000 and Series 5000 (S51xx – S56xx).

The Philips SmartClean 5.2 system is compatible with all Philips shavers in Series 9000.

Where can I find the model number and the serial number of my Philips shaver?

You can find the model and serial number of your Philips shaver on the reverse side of the shaver. The serial number consists of 9 digits.

Can I charge my Philips shaver after every shave?

Yes, you can recharge your shaver after every shave. The battery in your Philips shaver is a lithium-ion battery which allows you to recharge it every day.

Which foam or gel can I use with my Philips shaver?

You can use any type of shaving foam or gel available in the supermarket or drugstore with your wet and dry Philips Shaver. If you have sensitive skin, we advise you to use a shaving foam or gel for sensitive skin.

Does using a foam of gel effect my shaver’s performance?

Wet shaving with foam or gel uses more energy and can thus drain your shaver’s battery much faster. If you use your Philips Shaver for dry shaving only, the battery can last much longer.

Is it better to dry or wet shave with my Philips Shaver?

Both dry and wet shaving have their own advantages. It comes down to your personal choice of shaving. Some points to consider are as follows:

  • Dry shaving can be done almost anywhere, even on the go, and there is hardly any cleaning involved.
  • Wet shaving feels refreshing and is often beneficial for sensitive skin as it reduces friction and irritation caused by a blade.
  • Can I replace the battery of my Philips shaver?
  •  Your Philips Shaver comes with a customized built-in battery. Do not try to replace the battery yourself. If you are having trouble charging your shaver read our article on this issue or contact us for further help.
  • How do I get the best results with my Philips Shaver?
  • To get the best results from your Philips Shaver, follow our tips and tricks outlined below.
  • Allow your skin an adjustment period
  • If you are a new user of the Philips Shaver, keep in mind that your skin needs to adapt to the electric razor. This means that your skin may feel slightly irritated in the beginning. Allow yourself an adjustment period of two to three weeks with your new Philips Shaver.
  • You can also use a gentle moisturizer or aftershave lotion to minimize skin irritation after shaving.
  • Pre-trim your long facial hair
  • Shaving long hair can be uncomfortable and may lead to skin irritation.
  • If you have not shaved for a couple of days and have a heavy beard, it is a good idea to trim your beard before you start shaving. This technique also helps in reducing shaving time.
  • Some Philips Shavers come with a trimming attachment that you can use to trim your beard. Otherwise, use your normal beard trimmer.
  • Be gentle
  • While shaving, it is important to be gentle, especially if you have sensitive skin prone to irritation. Do not press the shaver too hard against your skin. Only apply a gentle pressure which makes your facial hair stand upright and makes it easier for the shaver blades to catch and cut them.
  •  Gentle pressure also reduces friction between the shaver and your skin, resulting in a more comfortable experience.

    Question

What does it mean when the arrow symbol on the Philips SmartClean unit lights up?

    Answer

The user is correct. If the arrow symbol on your Philips SmartClean unit is lighting up, it indicates that the cleaning cartridge needs to be replaced. This happens when the cleaning solution level falls below the minimum requirement or the solution is no longer effective.

To resolve this, follow these steps:

    • Press the button on the side of the SmartClean system to open the cartridge compartment.
    • Remove the empty or old cartridge.
    • Insert a new SmartClean cleaning cartridge (ensure the protective seal is removed).
    • Push the compartment back up until it clicks into place.

Once a new cartridge is detected, the arrow symbol should turn off, and the system will be ready for use again.

    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

Why is my Philips SP9860 Prestige shaver difficult to fit into the SmartClean system?

    Answer

The difficulty you are experiencing is likely due to a compatibility mismatch between the specific design of the S9000 Prestige series and the standard SmartClean stations. While the SmartClean 5.2 system is compatible with standard Series 9000 shavers, the SP9860 Prestige model is designed differently.

According to the product documentation, the SP9860 Prestige is typically intended for use with a wireless Qi charging pad rather than the mechanical SmartClean station. The Prestige models often have a wider body or different charging contact points that do not align with the standard SmartClean 5.1 or 5.2 docking mechanisms. If you have to use "great effort" to insert it, we recommend stopping immediately to avoid damaging the charging pins on the station or the finish of your shaver.

For the SP9860, Philips generally recommends manual cleaning under the tap and using the included wireless Qi pad for charging as shown in the manual instructions.

    Question

My Philips SmartClean system has stopped working even after replacing the cleaning fluid. How can I troubleshoot this and what is the cost of a replacement unit?

    Answer

If your Philips SmartClean system is not working after replacing the cleaning cartridge, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Check the Power Connection: Ensure the power cord is firmly plugged into both the SmartClean station and a working electrical outlet.
    • Reset the System: Unplug the station for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
    • Verify Shaver Placement: Ensure your shaver is properly seated in the holder and pushed down until it clicks into place. The cleaning cycle will not start if the shaver is not correctly positioned.
    • Check the Cartridge Level: Ensure the cleaning cartridge is fully inserted into the bottom of the station until it clicks. If the 'replacement' symbol is still flashing, the cartridge may not be detected.
    • Clean the Connectors: Use a dry cloth to wipe the charging pins on the shaver and the contact points inside the SmartClean station.

Regarding the cost of a new unit, Philips typically sells the SmartClean station as an accessory or part of a shaver bundle. Prices generally range from $50 to $90 USD depending on the specific model (e.g., SmartClean 5.1 vs 5.2) and your region. You can check the official Philips parts website or major retailers for current local pricing.

    Question

Why is my Philips SmartClean system charging my Shaver 9000 but not running the cleaning cycle?

    Answer

If your Philips SmartClean system is charging your Shaver 9000 but not initiating the cleaning cycle, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Reset the System: Unplug the SmartClean station from the power outlet, wait for 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can often resolve software glitches.
    • Check the Cleaning Cartridge: Ensure that a cleaning cartridge is properly inserted into the bottom of the station and that it is not empty. The system will not start a cleaning cycle if it detects the fluid level is too low.
    • Verify Shaver Placement: While the shaver may be making enough contact to charge, it must be fully pressed down and locked into the holder for the cleaning cycle to trigger. Ensure the holder is pushed down to its lowest position.
    • Clean the Contacts: Sometimes residue on the shaver or the station's connector pins can interfere with the communication between the two devices. Gently wipe the metal contact points on both the back of the shaver and the station with a dry cloth.

Note that the SmartClean 5.2 is the specific model designed for compatibility with the Series 9000 shavers. If the issue persists after a reset and checking the cartridge, there may be a mechanical fault with the pump system in the stations.

    Question

Why is my Philips SmartClean system charging my Series 9000 shaver but not starting the cleaning or drying program?

    Answer

If your Philips SmartClean system is charging your Series 9000 shaver but the cleaning program will not start, please check the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Check the Cleaning Cartridge: Ensure there is a cleaning cartridge present in the bottom compartment and that it is not empty. The system will not start the cleaning cycle if the fluid level is too low.
    • Proper Placement: Ensure the shaver is pushed down firmly into the holder. While it may be making enough contact to charge, the cleaning cycle often requires the shaver to be fully locked into position to engage the internal sensors.
    • Model Compatibility: Confirm you are using the SmartClean 5.2 system, as this is the specific model designed for compatibility with the Series 9000. The SmartClean 5.1 is intended for Series 7000 and 5000 models.
    • Reset the System: Unplug the SmartClean station from the power outlet, wait for 10 seconds, and plug it back in to reset the electronics.

Note: The drying program is only available on the SmartClean Plus (model 5.2). If you have the standard SmartClean model, it may only feature the cleaning and charging functions.

    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

Why is my Philips SmartClean system not pumping cleaning fluid even though the shaver makes noise and the cartridge is full?

    Answer

If your Philips SmartClean system (compatible with Series 9000) is making noise but not pumping fluid, please check the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Check for Blockages: Ensure there is no hair or debris blocking the dual filter system inside the cleaning station. Even with regular liquid changes, small particles can sometimes obstruct the intake.
    • Verify Cartridge Seating: Ensure the cleaning cartridge is fully pushed into the base and the station is locked down correctly. If the cartridge is not perfectly aligned, the pump may not be able to draw liquid.
    • Reset the System: Unplug the SmartClean station from the power outlet for 10 seconds, then plug it back in to reset the internal electronics.
    • Inspect the Shaver Placement: Ensure the shaver is properly seated in the holder. The SmartClean 5.2 system requires a secure connection to initiate the full cleaning cycle.

If the pump continues to fail after these checks, the internal motor or pump mechanism may have failed after its year of use, and you may need to contact Philips support for a replacement base.
