MXL 770X Multi Pattern Condenser Microphone Kit
Thank you for choosing the MXL 770X Condenser Microphone Kit. For best results, please take a few moments to read this manual and familiarize yourself with proper operation and care of this microphone.
Contents
Unpack your MXL R144 Microphone package carefully and verify that all of the following items are included:
- 770X Mic
- Integrated Pop-Flter
- 20’ XLR Cable
- Microfiber Cleaning Cloth
If any of these items are missing or damaged, contact the company from which you purchased the microphone.
General Characteristics
This microphone has a dual-diaphragm 32mm capsule that provides multiple pickup patterns and a very open and detailed sound. Large capsule condensers are very sensitive, readily revealing very subtle sonic details. They also tend to pick up sounds outside the pattern more than some designs, which can lead to powerful feedback if you are not careful. We strongly advise experimentation with placement and isolation requirements with the gain initially set low to avoid equipment (and ear) damaging surprises.
Power Requirements
IMPORTANT – This unit requires phantom power at 48 volts, +/- 4 volts, in order to operate. Each unit has been thoroughly checked before shipping, so if you do not hear sound, check that the phantom power on your mixer or separate power supply is switched on.

Care
Dust and foreign material can degrade the performance of a microphone over time, so always store the unit in its box. For vocals closer than 3”, use a pop filter or a foam windscreen to avoid getting moisture on the diaphragm as this can substantially degrade the microphone’s performance. Store the microphone in its original packaging in a cool, dry place along with the included packet of silica gel.
Warranty
MXL microphones are guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. If you encounter any problem with this unit, promptly contact the company from which you purchased it for assistance. The original dated sales receipt will be necessary for any warranty claim. Do not send any unit directly to us without prior authorization from our service department. Warranty coverage is limited to repair or replacement (at our option) of the microphone, and does not cover incidental damages due to use of this unit, nor damage caused by accidental misuse of this product.
Selectable Polar Patterns
The polar pattern of the microphone indicates how the microphone has been designed to react to incoming sound waves. The 770X has the ability to switch between polar patterns to best match the recording environment.
The
polar pattern excels at picking up sound from the front of the microphone, less from the sides and has good rejection of sounds to the back of the microphone. Select the cardioid pattern for situations when you want to pick up specific sound sources, such as a specific guitar within an ensemble, and is recommended for recording applications where the acoustics are good, but not perfect. For instance, a cardioid pattern is less likely to pick up ambient noise from computersand recording equipment
The
polar pattern picks up sound equally from all sides of the microphone. This is best used for recording in environments with excellent acoustics, as the omnidirectional pickup excels at picking up ambient noise. The omni-directional polar pattern is less sensitive to “plosives”, handling noise and the proximity effect
The
polar pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amound of rejection 90 degrees off axis. Figure-8 patterns are the most susceptible to proximity effect and are commonly used in Mid-Side (MS) stereo recording setups.
