Point Level Float Switch Testing
Vertical Switches
Using a basic Ohm Meter, test the switch to read .1 – .2 ohms when the switch closes at the center of the float travel moving in both directions for NC and NO. (Remember your meter leads alone may also read ~.2 ohms when put together so you may read .3 – .5 ohms all together.) These switch readings should be the same even after being properly installed and powered.
The switch should be tested in both Normally Closed and Normally Open positions and will close/open at the center of the float travel with 1/16” – 1/8” overtravel on each side of the float, in each direction.
Horizontal Switches
Test with a basic meter to open and close the reed switch as the magnet end approaches and moves away from the internal switch and stem.
There should be approximately 1/16” – 1/8” overtravel when pivoting the float after opening and closing in each direction. To change the switch from NC to NO, rotate the switch 180 degrees when installing in an empty tank.
Multi Point Float Switches
These should be tested with an Ohm meter or continuity tester the same as a single point switch for each float level. There should be 1/16” – 1/8” of overtravel on each side of the float between the clips or collars as the float moves in each direction.
If the float needs to be changed from NC-NO or NO-NC, mark the clip locations (if not grooved), flip the float, and re-install the float placing the clips back in their original locations. Re-test for 1/16” – 1/8” overtravel in each direction. Reposition the clips as needed to ensure no more than 1/8” overtravel for proper operation.
