Connecting to a Vehicle Battery
Follow these steps to safely connect the Cobra PRO 3000W Power Inverter to your vehicle's battery:
- Mount the inverter inside the vehicle in a well-ventilated location close to the battery.
- For safety, install a properly rated fuse (not included) on the red cable as close to the positive (red) battery terminal as possible. Use 2 x 150 Amp fuses for the 3000W inverter.
- Disconnect the NEGATIVE (-) or black battery terminal of the vehicle.
- Route cables close to the battery.
- You will be installing two cables for the PRO 3000 Watt Inverter.
- Install the insulated terminal boots on the inverter end of the power cables (RED = positive, BLACK = negative).
- Connect each BLACK cable to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal on the Inverter.
- Connect each RED cable to the POSITIVE (+) terminal on the Inverter.
- Connect the other end of the RED cable to the (+) terminal on the vehicle battery.
- Visually inspect to ensure the red wire or its connectors are not touching any metal parts of the vehicle or the black wire connectors.
- Connect the other end of the BLACK cable to the (-) terminal on the vehicle battery. A spark may occur at the point of contact at the negative terminal.
- Check all connections, ensuring RED cables are connected to POSITIVE (+) terminals and BLACK cables are connected to NEGATIVE (-) terminals.
- Proceed to the "Getting Started" section to review the Battery Low Voltage Alarm setting based on your vehicle.
Diagram Description: The diagram illustrates connecting two red cables to the positive terminals of the inverter and the vehicle battery, and two black cables to the negative terminals of the inverter and the vehicle battery. It also indicates the recommendation for fuses or circuit breakers on the positive cable.
Getting Started
- Connect the Remote On/Off Controller with Fast Charge USB (Optional).
- Press the POWER button to turn on your inverter (or the POWER button on the remote controller).
- When the inverter is powered on, the Input Voltage LED should be green, indicating a healthy battery voltage.
Setting Up Your Inverter: Low Voltage Alarm
Cobra Pro Power Inverters feature two settings to manage battery run times for different vehicle types.
Default Setting: 11.5 Volt
From the factory, the PRO Power Inverter is set to an 11.5 Volt default Battery Low Voltage Alarm. It will automatically shut down at 10.5 Volts to protect the battery from deep discharge, ensuring you can start your vehicle. This setting is ideal for Professional Trucks.
CAUTION: The default 11.5 Volt setting is designed for Professional Trucks and larger vehicle batteries. Using this setting with a standard car, van, or RV may cause the alarm to sound earlier than necessary, reducing battery run time.
Alternate Setting: 10.5 Volt
If using a Cobra PRO Power Inverter with a car, van, or RV, the alternate 10.5 Volt setting is recommended. Batteries in these vehicles can tolerate a slightly deeper drain, avoiding an "early" Battery Low Voltage Alarm signal and providing longer run time.
CAUTION: When set to the alternate 10.5 Volt setting, your power inverter will automatically shut off at 9.5 Volts. Do not use the alternate setting with a Professional Truck or larger vehicle.
How to Change the Low Voltage Alarm Setting:
- Connect the Remote On/Off Controller with Fast Charge USB (Optional).
- Press the POWER button to turn on your inverter (or the POWER button on the remote controller).
- Press and hold the POWER button for 5 seconds, or until the Input Voltage LED turns blue.
Once the LED is blue, the Battery Low Voltage Alarm is set to sound when your battery voltage reaches 10.5 Volts. The power inverter will automatically shut down at 9.5 Volts. This setting will remain even if the inverter is turned off or the battery is disconnected. To revert to the 11.5 Volt default setting, repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
Diagram Description: The document shows two voltage setting options. The first is represented by a green circle labeled "11.5 Volt Setting (Default)" and an arrow pointing to a truck icon, indicating suitability for professional trucks. The second is represented by a blue circle labeled "10.5 Volt Setting (Alternate)" and arrows pointing to a car and a van icon, indicating suitability for cars, vans, or RVs.
