1 Introduction

1.1 Read me first!

Thank you for choosing the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system. This system incorporates the latest technical advances and meets all recognized safety standards. Nevertheless, improper use may result in danger to the user or third parties and/or damage to property. To ensure a safe, proper, and correct installation, please observe and comply with all information and safety instructions contained in this documentation, as well as in the separate documentation for components used with the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system. If you have questions after reading this documentation, please contact your Condair representative.

1.2 Notes on the installation manual

Scope: This installation manual covers the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system in its various versions. Additional system components, options, and accessories are described only as necessary for proper installation. For more information, refer to their respective instructions. The information provided is limited to the installation of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system and is intended for well-trained specialist personnel qualified for the respective work. This manual is supplemented by other documents (e.g., operation manual, spare parts list). Cross-references are provided where necessary.

Use of model designation:

  • RO-E: Instructions apply only to the RO-E model series.
  • RO-E+: Instructions apply only to the RO-E+ model series.
  • RO-E(+): Instructions apply to both RO-E and RO-E+ model series.

Definitions

  • Raw water: Untreated drinking or tap water without additives like chlorine, H2O2, ozone, etc.
  • Soft water: Water produced by a water softener unit, replacing hard ions (calcium, magnesium) with sodium.
  • Pure water (reverse osmosis water): Water partially demineralised by the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system.

Safekeeping

Safeguard this installation manual in a safe place for immediate access. If the equipment changes hands, this manual must be passed on to the new operator. If misplaced, contact your Condair representative.

2 For your safety

2.1 General safety guidelines

Every person carrying out installation work must have read and understood the installation and operation manuals before starting. Knowing and understanding these manuals is essential for protecting personnel against danger and preventing faulty installation. Observe all icons, signs, and markings applied to the components and keep them readable.

Qualification of personnel: All work described may only be carried out by trained and qualified personnel authorized by the owner. The owner is responsible for verifying proper qualification. Actions beyond this manual's scope must only be performed by a Condair service technician or authorized personnel. Personnel must be familiar with and comply with appropriate work safety and accident prevention regulations.

2.2 Intended use

The Condair RO-E pure water system is intended exclusively for producing reverse osmosis water for Condair isothermal humidification systems. The Condair RO-E+ pure water system is intended exclusively for producing reverse osmosis water for Condair adiabatic humidification systems, within the specified operating conditions. Any other use without written consent from Condair is considered non-conforming, may lead to danger, and will void the warranty. Intended use includes observing all information in this installation manual and the operation manual, especially safety instructions.

2.3 Danger that may arise from the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system

DANGER! Risk of electric shock! The system is mains powered. Live parts may be exposed when covers are open. Touching live parts can cause severe injury or death. Prevention: Disconnect the system from the mains and secure it against inadvertent power-up before any work. Important: The frequency converter contains capacitors that can remain charged with a deadly voltage for some time after power disconnection. Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting power, then verify that contacts on the frequency converter and pump motor terminals are free of voltage before proceeding.

DANGER! Health risk because of inadequate hygiene! Inadequately operated or poorly maintained systems may endanger health. Prevention: Operate and maintain the system strictly in accordance with this manual.

CAUTION! Do not use oil, grease, glue, Teflon, silicone, or O-ring lubricants when assembling pipes or hose connections, as these can promote bacterial growth. Only approved lubricant is dishwashing liquid. Always wash hands and wear clean disposable gloves when assembling parts in direct contact with water. Do not remove dust protection caps until just before assembly. When fitting filters, RO membranes, hoses, or other water-contact components, wash hands and wear sterile disposable gloves or touch only the packing foil to keep them bacteria-free.

WARNING! Water produced by the Condair RO-E(+) system is very aggressive and can cause metals to corrode quickly. Always connect the system to piping/equipment suitable for handling reverse osmosis water.

2.4 Ensure safe installation

Observe local safety standards: Comply with all local safety standards for installing mains-powered electrical/electronic devices and low-pressure water systems.

Preventing dangerous situations: All personnel working on the system must immediately report any alterations affecting safety to the responsible person of the owner and secure the system against unintentional activation.

Prohibited modifications: No modifications must be undertaken without express written consent from Condair. For replacement of defective components, use exclusively original accessories and spare parts from your Condair representative.

2.5 Hygiene

Please observe local health and safety executive guidance on Legionellosis control in water systems. The installer is responsible for ensuring the water system complies with local regulations, bylaws, and guidelines (e.g., HSE ACoP L8, VDI 6022, ISO 22000, HACCP). The Condair RO-E(+) pure water system is produced according to best hygiene standards to reduce the risk of Legionnaires' disease. However, the operator is responsible for ensuring the system stays clean! Any risks or hazards, including during installation, must be identified by a competent health and safety representative who will introduce effective control measures. Observe and follow all hygiene instructions in the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system operation manual.

DANGER! The Condair RO-E(+) pure water system must be installed in accordance with this manual. Failure to do so could result in contamination that might cause Legionnaires' disease, which can be fatal.

3 Product Overview

The Condair RO-E pure water system produces reverse osmosis water for Condair isothermal humidifiers. It is available in 4 models with different maximum pure water outputs. All models share the same housing and electrical parts. They can operate as stand-alone systems controlled by an external Condair control unit or as integrated systems controlled by the corresponding Condair humidifier control unit.

Note: For GS and SETC systems, the Full Tank Blow Down (FTBD) settings must be turned off, and blowdown rate set to 15%. RS-RO drain water cooling must be installed and the reduction interval time set to drain 1 litre every 180 minutes for scale management.

* Tank sizing is possible for the chosen RO-E model size but the tank fill time parameter must be adjusted to allow for fills from empty without faulting out. Fill time may be doubled. Example: To pair a GS100 unit with an RO-E 100. Either a 85 gallon storage tank with a fill time adjustment can be used or a 119 gallon tank can be used without any affect on fill time. 41 minutes vs 20 minutes to fill from empty, where the default settings would cause the unit to fault out after a fill time of 40 minutes.

The product designation and most important unit data are found on the rating plate fixed on the top and back sides of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system. The plate typically includes:

3.7 Available accessories

  • Condair IC2 control unit: For stand-alone systems. Features a touch panel, operation status LED (green/yellow/red), and USB interface for data logging and software updates.
  • Remote operating and fault indication: Board with five potential-free relay contacts for remote signaling of unit status (Unit on, Unit producing, Maintenance due, Error present).
  • Leakage monitoring: Consists of a leakage monitoring control board and floor sensor(s). Connects to the driver board. Note: Does not replace the need for a floor drain or tub.
  • Single water softener "Envirofalk 40 CK": Reduces water hardness if inlet water exceeds specified values. Provides a regeneration contact.
  • Double water softener "Kinetico": Mechanical hardness dial disk for reducing water hardness. Does not require electrical connections.
  • Double water softener "Envirofalk MC-N2C/N2CT": For reducing water hardness.
  • Single filter: 5 µm filter as a pre-filter. Can be installed before and/or after the water softener.
  • Dual filter: Pre-filter mandatory if supply water is occasionally chlorinated. Consists of activated charcoal filter (1) and 10 µm filter (2). Not for permanently chlorinated water.
  • Triple filter: Pre-filter mandatory if supply water is occasionally chlorinated. Consists of 10 µm filter (1), activated carbon filter (2), and 5 µm filter (3). Not for permanently chlorinated water.
  • Pressure reducing valve: For water inlet pressures >6 bar. Installed after the shut-off valve.
  • Shut-off valve: For installation in the supply water pipe to shut off the water supply.
  • Sampling tap: For installation in the supply water pipe for taking water samples.
  • Hose set: For connecting the Condair RO-E(+) system and accessories.
  • External pressure tank: 6 different sizes available: 14 gal (53 l), 20 gal (76 l), 32 gal (121 l), 44 gal (166 l), 85 gal (321 l), 119 gal (450 l).

3.8 System overview

4 Important notes

4.1 Inspection of the delivery

  • Inspect shipping boxes for damage: Report any damages to the shipping company immediately.
  • Check packing slip: Ensure all parts have been delivered. Report shortages to your Condair supplier within 48 hours. Condair is not responsible for shortages beyond this period.
  • Unpack and check parts/components: Notify the shipping company immediately if parts/components are damaged.
  • Verify suitability: Check if components are suitable for installation on your site according to facility documentation.

4.2 Storage and Transportation

Storing: Until installation, store components in original packaging in a protected area meeting the following requirements: Room temperature: 41 ... 104 °F (5 ... 40 °C); Room humidity: 10 ... 75 %rh.

Transportation: For optimum protection, always transport components in their original packaging using appropriate lifting/transporting devices.

WARNING! It is the customer's responsibility to ensure installers and operators are trained in handling heavy goods and comply with work safety and accident prevention regulations.

Packaging: Observe local regulations on waste disposal. Please recycle packaging where possible.

5 Mounting and installation work

5.1 Safety notes on mounting and installation work

Qualification of personnel: All mounting and installation work must be carried out only by properly instructed and well-qualified personnel (e.g., certified plumbers and electricians) authorized by Condair. The owner is responsible for verifying proper qualification.

General notes: Strictly observe all information in this manual regarding positioning, mounting, and water/electrical installations. Comply with all local regulations for water and electrical installations.

Safety: Some installation work requires removing unit covers.

CAUTION! Electronic components inside the control compartment, the Condair control unit, and the humidifier control unit are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Take appropriate ESD protection measures before working inside these units.

5.2 Requirements on siting and installation

Typically, the siting is determined during planning. Observe the following general guidance:

  • All installation work must be performed in accordance with industry good practice and supply regulations from local utilities.
  • All Condair RO-E(+) pure water system components must be installed inside a building in a room that can be locked and is accessible only to a limited number of people. The room must meet the following requirements:
    • Room temperature: +10 °C to +30 °C (+50 °F to +86 °F) throughout the year.
    • Room must be equipped with a floor drain with sufficient capacity (min. 1,000 l/h). If no floor drain is available, all components must be installed in a tub equipped with a drain connected to the building wastewater line.
    • Room must be equipped with tap water supply capable of delivering the required water flow.

  • Depending on the voltage (see rating plate), the room must be equipped with a 230 VAC / 50-60 Hz or 120 VAC / 60 Hz mains supply line with an electrical isolator. The isolator should be located near the unit (39.37" (1.0 m) to 59.05" (1.5 m) above the floor).
  • The mains supply line must be protected with a residual current device (RCCB) or a UL listed Class A ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI).

  • The mains supply line must be protected with a "F1" 10 A slow-acting fuse (230 VAC / 50-60 Hz) or 15 A slow-acting fuse (120 VAC / 60 Hz).

  • No modifications without express written consent from Condair.
  • Installation of additional fittings not indicated on the schematic is prohibited.
  • Comply with material specifications at all times.

5.3 Positioning the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system components

General positioning notes

  • Whenever possible, place/mount system components on the same level and in the same room.
  • Components upstream of the Condair RO-E(+) system (shut-off valve to test cock) must be installed in the sequence shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5.
  • External pressure tanks (up to 3) can be placed on the left or right side of the unit.
  • Keep distances between components as short as possible (max. 3 m between each component).
  • The pressure tank safety valve (optional, mandatory for CE systems) must be placed approximately 5.91" (150 mm) above the unit (RO-E(+) 40-100 with internal tank) or above the first external tank (RO-E(+) 200-300).
  • Ensure the drain line is as short as possible and the drain funnel is below the drain connector.
  • Ensure the reverse osmosis water line is as short as possible with minimal height difference to the consumer. Pressure drop must not exceed 14.50 psi (1 bar).
  • Ensure the temperature of the reverse osmosis water in RO-E+ systems with adiabatic humidifiers does not exceed 68°F (20°C).

5.3.1 Mounting of the pre-filter

Follow the installation instructions in the separate instructions for the corresponding filter.

5.3.2 Positioning the optional water softener and the 5 µm filter (if applicable)

Place the water softener on the floor and install the 5 µm filter close to it. Refer to separate instructions for placement and connection details.

5.3.3 Positioning the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system

Place the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system at the desired position and align it horizontally using the four screw feet. Important: For systems with an internal pressure tank requiring an optional external safety valve, ensure at least 1.97" (5 cm) distance between a wall and the back of the unit for valve connection.

DANGER! Danger of electric hazard! Do not connect the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system to the mains yet.

5.3.4 Mounting the electrical isolator

Mount the electrical isolator at a suitable height near the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system. Refer to the manufacturer's installation instructions.

5.3.5 Positioning the external pressure tank

Place the external pressure tank as near as possible to the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system on the floor. See Fig. 12 to Fig. 14 for maximum hose lengths. The tank can be positioned to the left or right. Secure the tank against tilting.

5.3.6 Mounting the Condair control unit (for stand alone systems only)

Follow the installation instructions in the separate instructions for the control unit.

5.3.7 Mounting the optional pressure tank safety valve

The optional pressure tank safety valve (e.g., for CE certified systems) must be installed on-site and connected using the supplied black John Guest (JG) fittings and hoses. Follow specific steps for marking, drilling, inserting dowels, mounting clamps, and fastening the valve. Ensure vertical installation with the inlet at the bottom.

5.4.7 Notes on supply water line

The supply water line must be installed according to the overview diagrams (Fig. 8 to Fig. 11). Note the following:

  • Installation material must meet specifications in Section 5.4.6.
  • A shut-off valve and a pre-filter are mandatory upstream of the system.
  • If required by local regulations, a backflow preventer must be installed upstream.
  • For connection pressures >87 psi (>6 bar), a pressure reducing valve (set to 87 psi (6 bar)) must be installed upstream.
  • Follow instructions for connecting pre-filters, water softeners, and 5 µm filters.
  • The optional sampling tap for checking supply water quality must be installed immediately before the system.

5.4.8 Notes reverse osmosis water line

The reverse osmosis water line must be routed from the system outlet to the consumer connection as shown in the overview diagrams (Fig. 8 to Fig. 11). Ensure the distance is as short as possible with minimal height difference. The maximum permissible pressure loss is 1 bar. Connection material must meet specifications in Section 5.4.6.

5.4.9 Notes on drain lines

Drain line water softener: Connect according to overview diagrams (Fig. 8 to Fig. 11). Guide at a constant downslope to the open drain funnel with trap (max. length 16.4 ft (5 m)). Ensure the end of the drain line does not touch the funnel (min. air gap 0.8" (2 cm)). The funnel must be positioned below the drain connector.

Drain line of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system: Connect the drain line (inner diameter 0.39" (10 mm)) to the drain connection (hose connector 0.39" (10 mm) outside diameter) according to overview diagrams (Fig. 8 to Fig. 11) and guide down to the funnel with trap (max. length 5 m). Ensure the end of the drain line does not touch the funnel (min. air gap 0.8" (2 cm)). The funnel must be positioned below the drain connector.

5.4.10 Connection of the external pressure tank(s) to the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system

Connect external pressure tanks using the supplied black JG hoses (Ø8 mm). Important: Do not exceed maximum hose lengths shown in Fig. 12 to Fig. 14. Ensure hoses are not routed higher than the tank connection.

  1. Loosen and remove the six screws on the system cover.
  2. Break out the pre-cut hose passage on the desired side of the cover and attach edge protection.
  3. For RO-E(+) 40/100 systems, remove the hose from "P. out" on the internal pressure tank to "P. in" on the inlet valve block.
  4. Connect a supplied black JG hose (Ø8 mm) to the angle connector of the "P. out" connection (logic block or internal pressure tank) and route it to the upper connection on the (first) external pressure tank. Cut to length and connect.
  5. Connect a JG hose (Ø8 mm) to the "P. in" connection of the inlet valve block and route it to the lower connection on the (last) external pressure tank. Cut to length and connect.
  6. Reattach the cover, ensuring hoses are routed correctly through the passage. Secure with screws.

5.4.11 Connecting the optional pressure tank safety valve

Important installation notes:

  • Use only supplied black John Guest hoses and fittings.
  • Use only the original John Guest hose cutter.
  • Ensure hoses are free of score marks and burrs before insertion into fittings.
  • The safety valve must always be installed vertically with the inlet connection at the bottom.
  • The hose length from the pressure tank connection to the safety valve inlet must be as short as possible.
  • For RO-E(+) 40/100 systems, the safety valve must be mounted directly above the unit, with a constant downslope to the unit connection.
  • For RO-E(+) 200/300 systems with external tanks, the safety valve must be mounted directly above the first external tank, with a constant downslope to the tank connection.
  • For systems with multiple external tanks, connect the safety valve to the first tank.
  • The drain hose must be routed with a continuous downslope to the open drain funnel with siphon. Ensure the end does not touch the funnel (min. air gap 0.8" (2 cm)).

5.4.11.1 Connecting the pressure tank safety valve to the Condair RO-E(+) 40/100 pure water systems

Connection steps:

  1. Loosen retaining screw and remove unit cover.
  2. Install the JG bulkhead fitting with the angle connector in the rear wall of the housing.
  3. Connect the Ø8 mm JG hose to the elbow connector of the JG bulkhead fitting and route to the safety valve inlet. Cut to length and connect.
  4. Loosen the Ø8 mm JG hose on the upper connection of the internal pressure tank and shorten it by 235 mm.
  5. Connect the Ø8 mm JG T-connector with installed angle connector with the hoses as shown in Fig. 15.
  6. Connect the Ø12 mm JG hose to the outlet connection of the safety valve and route with constant downslope to the open drain funnel with trap.
  7. Attach unit cover and secure with the retaining screw.

5.4.11.2 Connecting the pressure tank safety valve to the Condair RO-E(+) 200/300 pure water systems

Connection steps:

  1. Cut the Ø8 mm JG hose connected to the upper angle connection of the external pressure tank approximately 2" (50 mm) to max. 4" (100 mm) from the connection.
  2. Connect the open hose ends of the cut hose to the Ø8 mm JG T-connector as shown in Fig. 16.
  3. Connect the Ø8 mm JG hose to the open connection of the T-connector and route to the safety valve inlet angle connection. Cut to length and connect.
  4. Connect the supplied Ø12 mm JG hose to the outlet connection of the safety valve and route with constant downslope to the open drain funnel with trap.

5.5 Electrical installation

5.5.1 Notes on electrical installation

DANGER! Risk of electric shock! The system is mains powered. Live parts may be exposed when covers are open. Touching live parts can cause severe injury or death. Prevention: Disconnect the system from the mains and secure it against inadvertent power-up before any work. Important: The frequency converter contains capacitors that can remain charged with a deadly voltage for some time after power disconnection. Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting power, then verify that contacts on the frequency converter and pump motor terminals are free of voltage before proceeding.

CAUTION! Electronic components inside the control compartment, the Condair control unit, and the humidifier control unit are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Take appropriate ESD protection measures before working inside these units.

  • All electrical installation work may only be carried out by a Condair service technician or by service personnel trained and authorized by Condair. The owner is responsible for verifying proper qualification.
  • Electrical installation must be carried out according to the appropriate wiring diagram (Section 7.2 and 7.3), installation notes, and applicable local regulations.
  • All cables must be led into devices via appropriate strain relief or grommets. The cable for the optional leakage sensor can be led from the top or bottom.
  • Ensure all cables are adequately fixed, do not rub on components, and do not pose a tripping hazard.
  • Observe maximum cable length and required cross-section per wire according to local regulations.
  • Mains supply voltages must match the voltage and fuse requirements stated in Section 5.5.3.

5.5.2 Electrical connections of the water softeners

Single water softener "Envirofalk 40 CK":

  • Power supply: Connected to mains via supplied power adapter.
  • Connecting the potential-free regeneration contact: Connect the contact to terminals "V+" and "IN" of terminal block "X11" on the driver board of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system.

Double water softener "Envirofalk MC-N2C/N2CT":

  • Power supply: Connected to mains via supplied power adapter.

Double water softener Kinetico: Does not require any electrical connections.

5.5.3 Electrical connections of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system

Connecting the Condair control unit to the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system (stand-alone systems):

Connect the 24 V power supply cable and the RS485 control cable to the corresponding terminals on the control board of the Condair control unit and the driver board inside the control compartment of the RO-E(+) pure water system, according to the wiring diagram. Refer to wiring diagrams in Section 7.2 and 7.3 for jumper and rotary switch settings.

Connecting the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system to the Condair humidifiers (integrated systems):

Connect the RS485 control cable to terminal "RS485-1" ("X3") on the driver board inside the control compartment of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system and to the terminal "RS485-2" on the driver board inside the control compartment/control unit of the appropriate Condair humidifier (Condair DL, RS, etc.), according to the wiring diagram. Refer to wiring diagrams in Section 7.2 and 7.3 for jumper and rotary switch settings.

Connecting the optional leak sensor:

Connect the optional leak sensor "SENS7" to the corresponding terminals of plug "X22" on the driver board in the control compartment of the Condair RO-E(+) pure water system, according to the wiring diagram.

Connecting the optional remote operating and fault indication:

Connect the remote operating and fault indication board "A5" to the corresponding terminals on the driver board using the supplied four-core cable, as shown in the wiring diagram. The board provides five potential-free relay contacts for "Error", "Service", "Running", and "Unit on" indications. "Furnace" relay is not supported. Maximum contact loading is 250V/8A. Use appropriate suppressor modules.

230 VAC / 50-60 Hz or 120 V / 60 Hz power supply:

Connect the voltage supply (L1, N, PE) according to the wiring diagram to the corresponding terminals inside the control compartment. The supply cable must be fed via the cable gland at the top of the device. Installation of the "F1" fuse (rating see Section 5.2) and the electrical isolator "S3" is mandatory. Installation of a residual current circuit breaker "S2" is recommended. Observe local electrical installation regulations. The electrical isolator must be mounted near the unit (max. distance 40" (1 m)) and accessible between 40" (1.0 m) and 59" (1.5 m) height.

CAUTION! Ensure the voltage indicated on the rating plate matches the local mains voltage. Otherwise, do not connect the unit. The cross-section of the mains cable must comply with applicable local regulations.

Warranty

Condair Inc. or Condair Ltd. (CONDAIR) warrants manufactured and assembled products for a period of two years after installation or 30 months from the manufacturer's ship date, whichever is earlier, to be free from defects in materials and workmanship. Specific products have alternate warranty periods:

  • GS/GSTC Series heat exchanger(s): 3 years from installation or 40 months from ship date.
  • SAM-e Short Absorption Manifolds (excluding coupling seals): 10 years from ship date.
  • Condair RH Connect and Condair RH Classic humidifiers: 5 years from ship date.
  • Spare Parts used for repairs: Balance of the term of the warranty on the original humidifier or 90 days, whichever is longer.

No warranty is made against corrosion, deterioration, or suitability of substituted materials used as a result of compliance with government regulations.

CONDAIR's obligations and liabilities under warranty are limited to furnishing replacement parts F.O.B. CONDAIR's factory.

Procedure:

  1. Customer requests warranty as per instructions on the CONDAIR Warranty Form.
  2. CONDAIR reviews the claim and responds with acceptance (replacement part or credit) or declination (with justification).
  3. CONDAIR may request parts to be returned, freight prepaid, for analysis to determine root cause or for supplier investigation. Replacement parts are sent against an invoice, with reimbursement via credit note if the warranty is accepted after analysis.

The warranties set forth are in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Liability is limited to the original purchase price. Any further warranty must be in writing and signed by a CONDAIR officer, except for purchased extended warranties.

CONDAIR makes no warranty and assumes no liability unless the equipment is installed strictly in accordance with the installation manual in effect at the date of purchase, and by properly qualified and licensed professionals.

CONDAIR makes no warranty and assumes no liability for consequential damage or damage resulting from misapplication, incorrect sizing, or lack of proper maintenance.

CONDAIR makes no warranty and assumes no liability for damage caused by freezing to products, humidifiers, supply lines, drain lines, steam distribution systems, or the building.

CONDAIR reserves the right to change design, specifications, and performance criteria without notice or obligation.

Extended Warranty

Extended warranties are available for purchase under the conditions listed above and must be purchased at the time of the original equipment order.
