Installing your AI Recorder
Park the car in a safe and convenient place for installation.
1. Insert the microSD card
Remove the Security Panel, if necessary, using the L-Shaped Torx Flat Screwdriver. A microSD card will be automatically formatted the first time it is inserted into the AI Recorder.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Backup the existing content of a microSD card before inserting it into the AI Recorder.
Waylens requires a high endurance microSD card (Class 10 or higher MLC microSD card, 32-512 GB) designed for continuous recording applications. While other cards may work, they are more prone to errors and failures.
2. Install power in the vehicle
Direct Wire Power Cord:
- Ensure the vehicle is turned off.
- Locate your fuse box and identify the appropriate fuse type from the vehicle's user manual.
- Connect the white ACC wire to a switched fuse using a Fuse Tap Cable. A switched fuse is one that powers accessory items like cigarette lighters or car radios, which turn off when the car is turned off. Verify this by checking for voltage across the circuit when the ignition is ON and OFF.
- Connect the red B+ wire to a constant power fuse using a Fuse Tap Cable. Constant power fuses remain active even when the car is off. Verify this by checking for voltage across the circuit when the ignition is ON and OFF.
- Connect the black GND wire to a chassis ground point, such as a bolt that is directly touching a bare metal surface of the vehicle's chassis.
- Route the wire with the USB Type-C plug of the Direct Wire Power Cord to the expected camera mounting location on the windshield.
- Secure any excess wire after the recorder is mounted.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The recorder should only be wired to a non-essential fuse circuit. Do not install the recorder on any safety system such as airbags, anti-lock braking systems, vehicle lights, or driver assistance systems.
NOTE: Professional installation assistance is recommended if you are unfamiliar with identifying fuses or installing power systems.
Fuse Tap Cable Usage: Select the correct Fuse Tap Cable for your vehicle (ACU Type, ACZ Type, ACS Type, ACN Type). Insert the supplied 5 Amp fuse into socket 2 and the identified vehicle fuse into slot 3. Ensure the 5 Amp fuse is in the uppermost socket.
OBD-II Power Cord (Optional):
- Locate the OBD-II socket in your vehicle.
- Insert the OBD-II plug firmly into the OBD-II socket.
- Route the wire with the USB Type-C plug of the OBD-II Power Cord to the expected recorder mounting location on the windshield.
- Secure any excess wire after the recorder is mounted.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If your vehicle has side impact airbags, ensure the harness does not interfere with their deployment.
NOTE: Leave extra cord length near the camera for easier connection and mounting/dismounting. If your vehicle uses an OBD Telematics Unit, an in-line Y Adapter Cable may be needed for both devices to connect to the vehicle BUS system.
J1939 Power Cord:
- Locate the J1939 socket in your vehicle, typically in the left knee area.
- Insert the J1939 Plug firmly into the socket.
- Route the wire with the USB Type-C plug of the J1939 Power Cord to the expected recorder mounting location on the windshield.
- Secure any excess wire after the recorder is mounted.
NOTE: Leave extra cord length near the recorder for easier connection and mounting/dismounting. If your vehicle uses a J1939 Telematics Unit, an in-line Y Adapter Cable may be needed for both devices to connect to the vehicle BUS system.
3. Connect power to the Al Recorder
For optimal performance, ensure the power cord is firmly and securely fitted into the recorder's Power Socket.
- Insert the Type-C plug into the Al Recorder Power Socket.
- Turn on the vehicle. The camera LED will illuminate blue and then turn red if an SD card is inserted.
- Use the Waylens Fleet App to perform a Power Test.
- If the Camera LED does not turn red or an SD error message appears on the Waylens Fleet App, try a different SD card or reinsert the current one.
- Once the Power Test passes and there are no SD card errors in the Waylens Fleet App, secure the Security Panel using the provided torx screws.
4. Mount the Al Recorder Mount Plate/Wedge Mount Plate
- Find a suitable location near the rearview mirror on the windshield. Ensure there is enough space around the location for attaching the AI Recorder (following step 5).
- Clean the windshield surface first with a wet wipe, then a dry wipe.
- Choose the appropriate mount plate based on the vehicle's windshield inclination. Use the flat AI Recorder Mount Plate for vertical windshields (e.g., heavy-duty vehicles) and the Wedge Mount Plate for sloped windshields.
- Remove the 3M stickers to expose the adhesive on the Mount Plate.
- Attach the Mount Plate to the windshield.
- Press firmly on the top and bottom to adhere it securely.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The installation location of your camera must comply with state and federal regulations. Contact your supplier for details if unsure.
NOTE: The flat Mount Plate is pre-attached to the Al Recorder. Remove it if you intend to use the Wedge Mount Plate. To remove the Mount Plate, place two thumbs on the plate and apply downward pressure to detach it from the Al Recorder.
5. Attach the Al Recorder to the Mount Plate/Wedge Mount Plate
Choose the right mount plate based on the windshield's rake.
- With the Mount Plate/Wedge Mount Plate attached to the windshield and the power cord connected, position the Al Recorder onto the Mount Plate/Wedge Mount Plate. Ensure the locking tabs align with the fittings on the recorder.
- Slide the recorder down to secure it firmly onto the Mount Plate/Wedge Mount Plate.
Please ensure the Al Recorder is installed properly and firmly attached to the windshield prior to operating the vehicle. Make any adjustments to the angle or position of the recorder before operating the vehicle.
6. Adjust Road Facing Camera orientation
- To ensure proper operation, the Road Facing Camera (RFC) should point horizontally. Adjust the RFC Adjuster and make the dial slot horizontal, with the small camera icon facing forward.
- Verify the view using the Waylens Fleet App.
7. Adjust Driver Facing Camera orientation
- The Driver Facing Camera's pitch and yaw can be adjusted directly. Remove the Driver Privacy Cover and adjust the camera angle so it is horizontally parallel to the vehicle cabin.
- Verify the view using the Waylens Fleet App.
- Insert the Driver Privacy Cover's top edge into the slot, press it into place, and secure it with the provided screws.
