I. Product Introduction
Coating thickness gauge is used for measuring the thickness of automobile paint. The automotive body shell consist of metal materials such as iron, aluminum and other non-metal materials such as carbon fiber and plastics. This coating thickness gauge can measure the thickness of car paint on iron and aluminum materials. Moreover, it can identify not only non-metal car bodies, but also the ferrous putty layer as well as the galvanized iron.
Standards for the product:
- DIN EN ISO 2808 Paints and Varnishes-Determination of Film Thickness
- JJG-818-2005 Verification Regulation of Magnetic and Eddy Current Measuring Instrument for Coating Thickness
- GB/T 4956-2003 Non-magnetic Coatings on Magnetic Substrates-Measurement of Coating Thickness-Magnetic Method
- GB/T 4957-2003 Non-conductive Coatings on Non-magnetic Basis Metals-Measurement of Coating Thickness-Eddy Current

III. Product Advantages
- No calibration, just zero adjustment.
- One hand operation, only one button.
- Fast measurement, 0.5 s measuring interval.
- Wear-proof ruby probe tip for long-term use.
- The device can identify the ferrous putty as well as the galvanized iron substrate.
- The gauge automatically identifies the substrate and switches measurement mode rapidly.
- "Fe", "NFe", "Fe/NFe" three measurement modes can be set.
- Measures non-magnetic coatings on steel or iron and non-conductive coatings on non-magnetic metal substrates in one gauge.
- Utilizes advanced digital probe technology, making sensors unsusceptible to interference and providing excellent measuring accuracy. Temperature variations do not affect measurement, ensuring stable readings and good reproducibility.
IV. Operation
1. Power on/off
Power on: Short press the power button to turn on the gauge. The version number and serial number are displayed, followed by the recorded data of the last measurement.
Power off: Long press the button to shut down the gauge, or it will automatically shut down after 3 minutes of inactivity.
2. Device setting
To enter the setting interface, long press the button for 3 seconds while the device is off. If there is no operation for more than 20 seconds, the instrument will automatically exit settings. Short press the button to select settings; long press for 3-5 seconds to confirm settings; long press for 5 seconds to exit settings and shut down.
Language settings
The instrument supports Chinese, English, Russian, and Turkish. To set the language: In the main setting interface, short press the power button to select "Language", long press for 3 seconds to confirm. Short press again to select the desired language, then long press for 3 seconds to confirm and return to the main setting interface.
Screenshots of the device's interface showing the setting menu, language selection options (Chinese, Russian, Turkish, English), and measurement mode selection (Fe, Al, Fe/Al).
Measurement modes selection
There are three measurement modes: Ferrous substrate (Fe), Aluminum substrate (Al), and Auto identification (Fe/Al). The Fe/Al auto identification mode is recommended for normal circumstances, as it identifies ferrous putty and galvanized iron substrates. Fe or Al can be selected for fixed measurement modes when the substrate is known.
Setting method: In the main setting interface, select "mode" by short pressing the power button, and long press for 3 seconds to confirm. Short press to select the measurement mode, then long press for 3 seconds to confirm and return to the main setting interface.
Unit setting
The device can be set to metric or imperial units; the factory default is metric. To set the unit: In the main setting interface, short press the button to select "Unit", long press for 3 seconds to confirm and enter the unit selection interface. Short press to select the desired unit, then long press for 3 seconds to confirm and return to the main setting interface.

To exit the setting interface and enter the measurement interface, in the main setting interface, short press the power button to select "Exit", then long press for 3 seconds to confirm.
3. Zero adjustment
Zero adjustment is required for the first use, after battery replacement, when changing materials, or due to ambient temperature changes. Use iron-base and aluminum-base adjustment plates for zero adjustment. It is recommended to perform reference checks on the uncoated original substrate. If not possible, use the provided Fe and NFe zero reference plates.
3.1 Measuring the plate or uncoated original substrate
Place the probe tip perpendicularly and evenly on the surface. A measured value will be displayed on the gauge.
3.2 Holding the probe
Hold the probe still and long press the button for 3s. The gauge will display "Zero Reference Place Probe".
Device display showing the 'Zero Reference Place Probe' prompt during the zero adjustment process.
3.3 Lifting the probe
After hearing a buzzer sound, the gauge will display "Lift off probe at least 15 cm". Release the button and lift the probe away from the plate (substrate) for at least 15 cm.
Device display showing the 'Lift off Probe At least 15cm' prompt after zero adjustment.
3.4 Zero adjustment completion
The zero adjustment is completed when a buzzer sounds again, and the LCD displays 0.0.
Device display showing '0.0 µm' indicating successful zero adjustment.
3.5 Verification
After zero adjustment, place a standard film on the substrate. If the measurement value is stable and within ±3µm of the standard value, the gauge can be used normally.
Note: Readings may not always be 0µm on the same spot after zero adjustment due to surface roughness, dirt, or scratches. Proper and proficient operation is crucial for stable measurements.
4. Measurement
- Use fingers to hold the gauge by the non-slip groove.
- Press the gauge vertically onto the surface to be measured. Keep it steady without tilting or shaking. The result will be shown on the screen with a buzzer sound.
- To continue measuring, lift the gauge away from the object. Repeat step 2.
- When the device identifies ferrous putty, it alerts with two buzzes and prompts "Ferrous putty". When it identifies galvanized iron, the green backlight turns on, and the substrate is displayed as "FeZn".
5. Check measurement records
In measurement mode, short press the button to check historical data. The gauge stores 9 sets of data. When more than 9 sets are stored, the earliest data is deleted. Recorded data is retained after powering off.
V. Attentions
- The device must be zero adjusted with both iron-base and aluminum-base zero adjustment plates to avoid misidentification of ferrous putty and galvanized iron substrate.
- Some car bodies may be misjudged as iron-zinc car bodies due to the base material.
- Do not slide the probe on the car surface, as this can damage the paint and the gauge.
- Keep the car paint surface clean; dust and dirt can affect measurement accuracy.
- Replace the battery when the gauge displays a low battery warning.
