Chapter 1 Before Operation
1-1 Overview
The GS-M is a Type 4 Interlocking Device based on ISO14119. It supports both low-level coded and high-level coded actuators. By combining the GS-M with a movable safety guard and a safety-related control system, hazardous machine operations can be stopped if the guard opens during operation.

Chapter 2 Installation
2-1 Installation Conditions
CAUTION
- The sensor's operating distance may be affected by surrounding metal. Determine the minimum safety distance after installation.
- Refer to ISO 14119 for requirements and precautions to minimize defeat possibilities.
Important
- Install the GS-M where the main unit cannot be accessed or onto a metal frame with heat dissipation capacity to prevent burn injury from accidental contact.
- Install the actuator and main unit to ensure close contact between magnet centers for optimal holding force.
Alignment tolerance
Typical Installation: Align alignment marks and magnet centers (GS-M5/GS-M9) or detection centers and magnet centers (GS-ML5). Refer to Chapter 6 for dimensions.
- GS-M5/GS-M9: Tolerance: A, B, C within 0-10 mm, Tilt within 4 degrees. Holding force: GS-M5: 500 N, GS-M9: 900 N.
- GS-ML5: Tolerance: Misalignment between detection centers within 5 mm, magnet centers within 5 mm. Tilt within 4 degrees.
Actuator teaching (high coded actuator): After power ON, the main unit memorizes the first detected actuator for 3 seconds or more. The indicator blinks green upon completion. Only memorized actuators can be detected after restarting.

DANGER
- If only one OSSD output is used, an OSSD malfunction can prevent the machine from stopping.
- Perform wiring to meet IEC 60204-1 requirements to prevent malfunctions caused by ground faults on OSSD output wires.
- Use an emergency stop switch/button with two or more independent, NC contacts. Refer to IEC 60204-1, ISO 13850, and other relevant regulations for emergency stop requirements.
- Ensure the device does not start or restart automatically when the emergency stop switch/button is reset.
- When using a PNP sensor, connect the OSSDs of the PNP type GS-M or GS to the safety inputs.
- When using a NPN sensor, connect the OSSDs of the NPN type GS-M or GS to the safety inputs.
- Confirm nobody is in the hazardous zone before releasing the interlock condition.
- Install the interlock release switch in a position where the entire hazardous zone can be checked and cannot be operated from within the hazardous zone.
- When the interlock function is set to Automatic, ensure the safety of the entire control system to prevent unexpected starts.
- Prevent the reset/EDM input from short-circuiting with other inputs or outputs.
- AUX outputs cannot be used as safety outputs.
Chapter 4 Functions
Functions vary by main unit model (simple, standard, advanced).
Function | Terminal type | Standard | Advanced function |
---|---|---|---|
OSSD operation | Lock link or Open/close link | Lock link or Open/close link | Lock link or Open/close link |
Safety inputs | 1*1 | 1*1 | 2 |
Interlock function | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
EDM function | ✓ | ||
Lock function | ✓ | ||
Number of AUX | 1*1 | 1*1 | 2 |
*1 When OSSD operation is set to "Open/close link", AUX cannot be used.
4-1 OSSD
OSSDs are safety outputs for machine control systems. OSSD 1/2 are redundant safety outputs. The GS-M performs self-diagnosis on its control circuit. If the internal control circuit does not receive a feedback signal (OFF-signal) based on self-diagnosis, the GS-M enters an error state.
OSSD operation
- Lock link: Actuator and main unit aligned and in contact, Lock control input ON, Safety inputs ON.
- Open/close link: Actuator and main unit aligned and in contact, Safety inputs ON.
4-2 Safety Input
This function controls OSSDs using input signals from sensors or emergency stop switches. Safety input 1 and 2 form a pair; if either goes OFF, OSSDs go OFF. Multiple GS-M units can be cascaded.
4-3 Interlock Function
Prevents OSSDs from automatically going ON from OFF, preventing unintended machine start-up or restart. Reset operation is required. Advanced function type offers Automatic (OSSDs switch ON when conditions met) and Manual (OSSDs remain OFF until reset) settings.
4-4 EDM Function
Monitors external devices (e.g., force guided relay, magnetic contactor) connected to OSSDs to detect failures, enabling start/stop control.
4-5 Lock Function
Uses electromagnetic power to keep the guard closed where the GS-M actuator is installed.
4-6 AUX Output
Informational output for checking GS-M operating status. Operation varies by main unit type. AUX outputs turn ON if an error occurs.
