Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Black and Decker® 300 Amp Jump-Starter/Inflator. This compact jump-starter is unique in the amount of energy it can supply for its size. The internal battery is a high density sealed, lead-acid battery that stores and delivers energy comparable to full-sized ordinary jump-starters. Please read this guide carefully before use to ensure optimum performance and avoid damage to the unit or items that you are using it with.

The Black and Decker® 300 Amp Jump-Starter/Inflator is a compact, durable, portable jump-start system for vehicles that have a standard 12 volt battery system. This self-contained, rechargeable system will start most vehicles without the need for a host vehicle or 12 volt DC power supply. It can also be used as a portable source of 12 volt DC electric power in remote locations and/or emergency situations. It is ideal for use with 12 volt DC cordless, portable, rechargeable products and DC/AC power inverters.

Applications

Charging / Recharging

Lead-acid batteries require routine maintenance for a full charge and long life. Batteries lose energy from self-discharge. Periodic charging is needed. If the unit is not used frequently, recharge at least every 60 days.

Check battery charge level by pressing the battery status button. Recharge when only one red LED lights.

Note: Unit is delivered partially charged. Fully charge before first use. Initial AC charge should be for 24 hours.

Recharging after each use prolongs battery life. Frequent heavy discharges or overcharging reduce battery life. Recharge using AC or DC adapter.

120 Volt AC Charging Method

Use the UL listed AC adapter. Ensure Jump-Starter Power Switch and Area Light Power Switch are OFF during charging. Battery Charge Status LEDs will light automatically. Charge until three red and one green LED indicators are lit. Continue for 1-2 hours, then disconnect. The unit cannot be overcharged using this method.

12 Volt DC Charging Method

Use the 12 Volt DC adapter. Ensure Jump-Starter Power Switch and Area Light Power Switch are OFF. Insert the gold-tipped adapter plug into the vehicle's 12 volt DC accessory outlet. Insert the silver-tipped end plug into the unit's 12 volt DC accessory outlet. Charge until the green FULL indicator lights when the battery status pushbutton is pressed. DO NOT EXCEED 4 HOURS MAXIMUM. Remove charging cord and store safely. CAUTIONS: Do not leave unit unattended while charging. Do not recharge using DC method for more than 4 hours to avoid shortening battery life.

Notes: Ensure all functions are OFF during recharge. Some vehicles require ignition to be in accessory position for the outlet to power.

Viewing Battery Charge Status

Press the Battery Status Pushbutton. Four LEDs indicate charge level: one light means recharge needed, all four lit means fully charged.

Jump-Starter Operation

The Jump-Starter is equipped with an ON/OFF Power Switch. Ensure connections are made properly before turning ON.

  1. Turn OFF vehicle ignition and all accessories (radio, A/C, lights, etc.). Place vehicle in Park and set the emergency brake.
  2. Ensure the Jump-Starter Power Switch is OFF.
  3. Remove jumper clamps from tabs. Connect the red clamp first, then the black clamp.
  4. For Negative-Grounded Systems (Most Common):
    • Connect POSITIVE (+) RED clamp to the vehicle battery's positive terminal.
    • Connect NEGATIVE (-) BLACK clamp to the vehicle chassis or a solid, non-moving metal component or body part, away from the battery. Never clamp directly to the NEGATIVE battery terminal or a moving part. Refer to vehicle manual.
  5. For Positive-Grounded Systems (Rare):
    • Connect NEGATIVE (-) BLACK clamp to the vehicle battery's negative terminal.
    • Connect POSITIVE (+) RED clamp to the vehicle chassis or a solid, non-moving metal component or body part, away from the battery. Never clamp directly to the POSITIVE battery terminal or a moving part. Refer to vehicle manual.
  6. When clamps are connected properly, turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch ON.
  7. Turn ON ignition and crank the engine in 5-6 second bursts until engine starts.
  8. Turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch OFF.
  9. Disconnect the negative (-) engine or chassis clamp first, then disconnect the positive (+) battery clamp.

FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOUND IN THIS MANUAL.

CAUTIONS: RISK OF PROPERTY DAMAGE:

WARNINGS:

12 Volt DC Portable Power Supply

This portable power source can be used with all 12 volt DC accessories equipped with a male accessory outlet plug and rated up to 5 amps.

  1. Lift up the cover of the unit's 12 volt DC outlet.
  2. Insert the 12 volt DC plug from the appliance into the 12 volt accessory outlet on the unit. DO NOT EXCEED A 5 AMP LOAD.
  3. Switch on the appliance and operate as usual.
  4. Periodically press the battery charge level pushbutton to check battery status.

Emergency Area Light

The area light is controlled by the Area Light Power Switch on the front panel. Ensure the lamp is turned OFF when the unit is being recharged or stored.

Alternator Check

  1. Make sure the Jump-Starter Power Switch is turned OFF.
  2. Remove jumper clamps from clamp tabs and connect to vehicle (refer to "Jump-Starter" section for polarity notes).
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  5. Turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch ON.
  6. Observe the Alternator Check Indicator. A solid green LED indicates a good alternator. A solid red LED indicates a bad alternator.

Note: This check may not be accurate for every make, manufacturer, and model of vehicle. Check only 12 volt systems.

Portable Inflator

The built-in 12 volt DC inflator is designed for vehicle tires and recreational inflatables. Three different sized nozzles are supplied. Each nozzle clips onto the standard tire valve connector at the end of the inflator hose. Nozzles are stored inside the hose hatch. The inflator hose with tire fitting is stored in a retaining channel on the rear of the unit. The ON/OFF Switch is located on the back of the Main Unit. The inflator can operate long enough to fill up to 3 average sized tires before the battery needs recharging.

To use, remove the air hose from the storage hatch and fit an appropriate nozzle. The ON/OFF switch controls power to the inflator and gauge light. Return hose to storage after use.

WARNING: BURST HAZARD:

CAUTION: RISK OF PROPERTY DAMAGE:

Do not operate inflator continuously for extended periods (approx. 10 minutes) as it may overheat. It will automatically shut down. Turn OFF the Inflator Power Switch immediately. Restart after a cooling down period of approx. 10 minutes.

Inflating Tires or Products With Valve Stems

  1. Place connector (chuck) on valve stem.
  2. Ensure connector is pushed on as far as possible before closing thumb latch.
  3. Make sure latch is secure.
  4. Turn ON the Inflator Power Switch.
  5. Check pressure with the pressure gauge.
  6. When desired pressure is reached, open thumb latch and remove connector.
  7. Turn OFF Inflator Power Switch.
  8. Allow unit to cool before storing.
  9. Store inflator hose and tire fitting in storage compartment.
  10. Recharge the unit before storing.

Inflating Other Inflatables Without Valve Stems

  1. Select the appropriate nozzle (located inside back cover).
  2. Insert appropriate adapter (e.g., needle) into connector (chuck) and close thumb latch.
  3. Small items like volleyballs, footballs inflate rapidly.
  4. Insert adapter into item to inflate to appropriate pressure.
  5. Turn ON the Inflator Power Switch and inflate to desired pressure or fullness.
  6. Remove adapter.
  7. Switch the Inflator Power Switch OFF.
  8. Recharge the unit before storing.
