Introduction and Product Registration

This guide provides essential information for setting up your FortiSwitch.
Product Series Overview
This document covers the following FortiSwitch models:
- FortiSwitch 148F
- FortiSwitch 148F-PoE
- FortiSwitch 148F-FPoE
Installation
Your device includes a rackmount kit. You can also install your device as Desktop. Custom Rack/Rail kits are also available.
Basic Connections
Connect the power cable to the FortiSwitch and then to a power outlet or UPS. It is recommended to connect your FortiSwitch to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in case of a power outage.
Rack Installation
This device mounts in a standard 19-inch rack.
- Attach the provided rack-mount brackets and screws to the FortiSwitch.
- Position the device and slide it into the rack.
- Fasten rack screws to secure the device.
Caution: Ensure there is at least 1.5 inches of space above and below the device for adequate airflow.
Warning: For safety, it is recommended that two people install the device.
Desktop Option
- Place the unit on a flat, clean, and stable surface.
- Ensure there is at least 1.5 inches of clearance around the unit for adequate airflow.
- Plug the provided power cables into the rear of the unit and then into a grounded electrical outlet or separate power source.
SFP Transceivers
To install SFP transceivers:
- Slide the SFP into the cage socket until it clicks into place.
- Lift the latch to lock the SFP.
To remove SFP transceivers:
- Lower the latch to unlock the SFP.
- Carefully pull the SFP out of the cage socket.
Setup Options
Set up your device locally using the GUI or CLI. Choose an option to complete your setup, then configure your device.
A. GUI Setup
An easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI), compatible with most web browsers. For optimal viewing, a screen resolution of at least 1280 x 1024 pixels is recommended.
- Connect Port 1 of the FortiSwitch to your Management Computer using the supplied Ethernet cable.
- Configure your Management Computer's IP settings:
- Static IP Address: 192.168.1.1
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Visit https://192.168.1.99 in a web browser.
- Log in using the username
admin
and no password.
Note: After your first login, you will be prompted to set a new password.
B. CLI Setup
An alternate configuration tool using a terminal emulation application. You can type commands or upload batches of commands from a text file or configuration script.
- Connect the Console Port of the FortiSwitch to the Serial Port on your Management Computer using a Console Cable.
- Start a terminal program on your Management Computer and select an available COM Port with the following default settings:
- Baud rate: 115200
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
- Flow control: None
- Log in using the username
admin
and no password.
Note: After your first login, you will be prompted to set a new password.
C. FortiLink Management
FortiGate units can remotely manage FortiSwitch units when the FortiSwitch is in FortiLink mode. Refer to the FortiOS Admin guide on docs.fortinet.com for detailed information.
D. FortiCloud Management
FortiSwitch Cloud manages FortiSwitch devices in standalone mode, allowing you to provision, monitor, and troubleshoot your deployment through a user interface. Register your device and cloud management license at support.fortinet.com. Sign in at fortilan.forticloud.com to manage your inventory list.

Cautions and Warnings
Environmental Specifications
Ambient Operating Temperature: 0°C to 45°C.
Rack Mount Instructions:
- Elevated Operating Ambient: If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack, the ambient temperature may be higher. Ensure the environment is compatible with the manufacturer's maximum ambient temperature (Tma).
- Reduced Air Flow: Installation should not compromise the required airflow for safe operation.
- Mechanical Loading: Mounting should not create a hazardous condition due to uneven loading.
- Circuit Overloading: Consider the connection to the supply circuit and potential effects on overcurrent protection and wiring.
- Reliable Earthing: Ensure reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment, paying attention to power strip connections.

Safety
Battery: There is a risk of explosion if the battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Do not dispose of batteries in fire. Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
Caution: Replace batteries only with the same or equivalent type. Improper disposal or handling of batteries can lead to explosion or leakage.
