Specific Warnings and Cautions
- Battery Safety: Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type. Do not short circuit, mix old and new batteries, dispose of in fire, or expose to water. Dispose of used batteries properly.
- Aggressive Dogs: Not for use with aggressive dogs. This product can cause severe injury or death to owners and others if used with aggressive dogs. Consult a veterinarian or certified trainer if unsure about your dog's temperament.
- On-Leash Training Safety: Ensure both you and your dog remain safe during on-leash training. Use a strong leash, long enough for chasing but short enough to prevent reaching unsafe areas. Ensure you are physically strong enough to restrain your dog.
- Toy Warning: This pet training device is not a toy and should be kept away from children.
- Skin Damage Risk: Proper fit and placement of the collar are crucial. A collar worn too long or too tight can cause skin damage, ranging from redness to pressure ulcers (bed sores).
- Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day.
- Reposition the collar on the pet's neck every 1 to 2 hours.
- Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure.
- Never connect a lead to the electronic collar, as this causes excessive pressure on the contacts.
- When using a separate collar for a lead, do not put pressure on the electronic collar.
- Wash the dog's neck area and collar contacts weekly with a damp cloth.
- Examine the contact area daily for signs of rash or sores.
- Discontinue use if a rash or sore is found until the skin heals. Consult a veterinarian if the condition persists beyond 48 hours.

Rechargeable Batteries
- NiMH batteries are not memory sensitive and do not require depletion before charging.
- Batteries are partially charged from the factory; a full 24-hour charge is required before first use.
- For long-term storage, charge batteries fully (12 hours) every 4 to 6 weeks.
- Avoid excessive overcharging; do not leave plugged in for more than 12 hours after the initial charge.
- Battery life may decrease initially after extended periods without charging but should return to previous capacity levels.
- Expect hundreds of recharge cycles; battery capacity naturally decreases over time. Contact Customer Care if operating time halves.
- Contact Customer Care or visit the website for battery replacement. Do not open the Receiver Collar or Handheld Remote.
Step 3: Fit the Receiver Collar
Proper fit and placement are crucial for effective operation. The Contact Points must have direct contact with your dog's skin on the underside of the neck.
- Ensure the Receiver Collar is turned off.
- Start with your dog standing comfortably.
- Place the Receiver Collar on your dog's neck close to the ears, centering the Contact Points underneath the neck to touch the skin. Trimming hair around the Contact Points may be necessary for consistent contact.
- CAUTION: Do not shave the pet's neck, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation.
- Check collar tightness by inserting one finger between the collar and your dog's neck. The fit should be snug but not constricting.
- Allow your dog to wear the collar for a few minutes, then recheck the fit. Recheck as your dog becomes more comfortable.
- CAUTION: The Receiver Collar should not be worn for more than 12 hours out of every 24-hour period to avoid skin irritation.
Step 4: Program the Remote Transmitter
The Handheld Remote is factory set to Mode 2. Modes can be changed to suit your training style.
To Change the Mode
- Adjust the Intensity Dial to the desired Mode.
- Turn the Handheld Remote over.
- Using a pen or paperclip, press and release the Mode Button. The Remote Indicator Light will be solid green when pressed and flash the number of times corresponding to the selected Mode when released. (e.g., for Mode 3, adjust Intensity Dial to Level 3, press and release Mode Button; light will be solid green, then flash 3 times).

- Program the third Receiver Collar by following steps A through D above, using the Side Button instead of the Upper Button.
Training Guide
Test the Remote Trainer
Experience the Remote Trainer firsthand. Start at the lowest level and gradually increase intensity to your comfort level.
- Place fingers on both Contact Points of the Receiver Collar.
- Hold the Handheld Remote about 2 feet from the Receiver Collar. Starting at Level 1, press the Stimulation Button for 1-2 seconds. You may not feel static stimulation at this level. Note: Continuous stimulation is limited to 8 seconds per press; release and repress to continue.
- Increase the Intensity Dial level until the sensation becomes uncomfortable.
General Tips
- Introducing the Remote Trainer: Introduce the collar when your dog has mastered basic obedience. Use only with pets over 6 months old.
- Avoiding a "Collar Wise" Dog: Prevent your dog from obeying only when wearing the collar or seeing the remote. Let the dog wear the collar during non-training sessions for positive experiences. Carry the remote but don't use it constantly. Professional trainers suggest this process takes a few days to a couple of weeks.
- Training Sessions & Determining Stimulation Levels: Keep sessions short and observe your dog's reaction to determine appropriate stimulation levels. Refer to "Find the Best Stimulation Level for Your Pet."
- Stopping Unwanted Behavior: Use higher stimulation levels to convince the pet that unacceptable actions caused the sensation, not you.
- Dogs First Learn One Command: Focus on one command at a time. Use low stimulation levels for commands like "heel," "come," "sit," or "down."
- Reinforcing Known Commands: Use medium stimulation levels to reinforce known commands, encouraging obedience. Praise and treats are effective rewards. Ensure you and your family remain the dog's leader.
- If your pet reacts fearfully to tones, redirect attention to a simple behavior like "sit."
- Training tones may affect other pets in hearing range; conduct sessions away from other pets.
- Only responsible family members should use the Trainer. It is not a toy.
WARNING: Never use the Remote Trainer to correct aggressive behavior. Consult a veterinarian or certified trainer if unsure about your dog's aggression.
Teaching Your Pet Tone A
Spend 10-15 minutes daily for 2-3 days to help your pet associate Tone A with reward and praise.
- Press the Tone A button for 2 consecutive seconds.
- Release the button and immediately reward your pet with praise, petting, or a food reward (3-5 seconds).
- Repeat step 2 after a few minutes, varying the reward. Training is complete when your pet anticipates a reward upon hearing Tone A.
Using Tone B
Press the Tone B button at the earliest sign of misbehavior. For example, to discourage couch-jumping, press Tone B as soon as the first paw touches the couch.
- Hold the Tone B button for up to 2 seconds, releasing it when the misbehavior stops.
- If misbehavior continues after 2 seconds, release and repress Tone B for up to 2 consecutive seconds.
- Continue this sequence until the misbehavior stops.
- Once stopped, wait two seconds, then press the Tone A button for two consecutive seconds.
- Reward your pet after Tone A approximately every 3-5 times to maintain the association with the low tone and reward.
Find the Best Stimulation Level for Your Pet
Important: Always start at the lowest level and increase gradually.
The Remote Trainer has 8 Stimulation Levels. Find the level that best suits your pet, known as the Recognition Level.
A slight change in behavior (looking around, scratching, ear flicking) indicates the Recognition Level.
- Starting at Level 1, press the Stimulation Button for 1-2 seconds.
- If no reaction, repeat the level several times before moving to the next.
- YOUR PET SHOULD NOT VOCALIZE OR PANIC. If this occurs, the level is too high; return to the previous level and repeat.
- Increase stimulation levels until your pet reliably responds.
- If your pet shows no response at Level 8, check collar fit. For long or thick hair, use longer Contact Points. Trim hair around Contact Points if needed.
- If no response after all steps, refer to "Test Light Instructions."
- If your dog still shows no response, contact Customer Care or visit www.petsafe.net.
Dog Training Recommendations
- When Training Begins: Start basic training as soon as you bring your puppy home, even though PetSafe products are for mature dogs.
- Remain the Leader: Prevent "collar wise" behavior. Use "Collar Conditioning": fit the collar, engage in enjoyable activities without activating it, and let the dog wear it during non-training sessions. Do not let the dog learn to obey only when seeing the remote. Carry the remote but don't use it constantly. This process can take days to weeks.
- Focus on the Dog: Watch your dog, not the remote, during training. PetSafe products simplify finding the point where your dog first perceives stimulation. Refer to "Find the Best Stimulation Level for Your Pet."
- "Good Dog" in Home or Outside: Stopping unwanted behavior is easy with Remote Trainers. Be fair and remove temptations.
- Be Consistent and Responsible: Use the Remote Trainer consistently for misbehavior. Only responsible family members should use it. It is not a toy.
Teaching Basic Obedience
The "Sit" Command
- Place a separate, non-metallic collar above the Receiver Collar and attach a long leash. Ensure the extra collar does not pressure the Contact Points.
- Hold the leash and Handheld Remote in one hand. Press and hold the Tone B Button while saying "Sit." Use your free hand to guide your pet into a sit position if needed. Release Tone B when the pet sits. Repeat several times.
- If your pet reliably sits on the Tone B and spoken command, training is complete. Release and praise. If not, proceed to step 4.
- Hold leash and remote. Press and hold both Tone B and Stimulation Buttons while saying "Sit." Use your free hand to guide if needed. Release buttons immediately when the pet sits. Repeat.
- If your pet reliably sits with the spoken command, try without stimulation. Take a break, then repeat from step 2 using Tone B only. Keep your pet close during training.
The "Recall" Command
- Place a separate, non-metallic collar above the Receiver Collar and attach a long leash. Ensure the extra collar does not pressure the Contact Points.
- Hold leash in one hand and Handheld Remote in the other.
- Wait for your pet to walk away from you.
- Press and hold the Tone B Button while saying "Recall" or "Come." Use the leash to guide your pet toward you if necessary.
- Immediately release Tone B as your pet steps toward you and praise enthusiastically.
- Move backward as your pet walks toward you, praising continuously. Stop and praise when your pet returns.
- Repeat steps 3 to 6 several times.
- If your pet reliably comes on the spoken "Recall" command, training is complete. Release and praise. If not, proceed to step 9.
- Wait for your pet to walk away from you.
- Using the Recognition Level, press and hold both Tone B and Stimulation Buttons while saying "Recall." Use the leash to guide your pet toward you if necessary.
- Immediately release buttons as your pet steps toward you and praise enthusiastically.
- Move backward as your pet walks toward you, praising continuously. Stop and praise when your pet returns.
- Repeat steps 9 to 11 several times.
- If your pet reliably comes on the spoken "Recall" command, he may be ready to respond without stimulation. Take a break, then repeat from step 3 with Tone B only.
The "Stay" Command
- Place a separate, non-metallic collar above the Receiver Collar and attach a long leash. Ensure the extra collar does not pressure the Contact Points.
- Identify a designated area (e.g., place his bed or a cloth on the ground).
- Place your pet in the area. Hold leash in one hand and Handheld Remote in the other.
- Stay within 3 feet, walk around the perimeter of the designated area without speaking to your pet.
- If your pet tries to leave, press and hold the Tone B Button while saying "Stay." Use the leash to guide your pet back to the designated area if necessary.
- Immediately release Tone B as your pet returns to the area and praise enthusiastically.
- Once settled, release him and play calmly.
- Repeat steps 3 to 7 several times.
- If your pet reliably stays on the spoken "Stay" command, training is complete. Release and praise. If not, proceed to step 10.
- Place your pet in the designated area and walk the perimeter as before.
- Wait for your pet to try to leave. Using the Recognition Level, press and hold both Tone B and Stimulation Buttons while saying "Stay." Use the leash to guide your pet back to the designated area if necessary.
- Immediately release buttons as your pet returns to the area and praise enthusiastically.
- Once settled, release him and play calmly.
- Repeat steps 10 to 13 several times.
- If your pet reliably stays on the spoken "Stay" command, he may be ready to respond without stimulation. Take a break, then repeat from step 3 with Tone B only.
Eliminating Unwanted Behavior
Jumping Up
Pets jump for attention. Discourage this by not encouraging the behavior. Reprimand or redirect your pet every time they jump. It is best if your pet understands the "Sit" command first.
- Choose an Intensity Level one step higher than your pet's Recognition Level.
- As soon as your pet lifts paws to jump, press and hold Tone B and Stimulation Buttons, saying "Sit."
- Release buttons immediately once the pet sits and praise them.
- If the pet ignores stimulation, use a higher level.
- Practice in different areas with various distractions.
Digging
Understand why your pet digs (e.g., instinct, boredom, seeking cool spots). Provide alternatives:
- A cool, shaded area with water.
- An alternate activity like a favorite toy.
- Ample play, exercise, and attention.
- A yard free from rodents or prey.
- Choose an Intensity Level one step higher than your pet's Recognition Level.
- Place the Receiver Collar on your pet and wait 10 minutes before placing them in the yard. Ensure no other people or pets are present to avoid associating stimulation with them. The yard must be securely fenced or contained.
- From a hidden location, wait until your pet begins to dig.
- While digging, press and hold Tone B and Stimulation Buttons. Release immediately when digging stops.
- If stimulation is ignored, use a higher level.
- Continue monitoring; your pet may choose another digging spot.
- Do not allow unsupervised yard access until digging has completely stopped.
Chasing
Chasing is instinctive. Never allow your dog off-leash in an unsecured area until the "Recall" command is learned, regardless of distractions. Be consistent in correcting chasing behavior.
CAUTION: Ensure safety during training. Use a strong leash, long enough for chasing but short enough to prevent reaching unsafe areas. You must be physically strong enough to restrain your dog.
- Choose an Intensity Level one step higher than your dog's Recognition Level.
- Set up a scenario to entice your dog to chase an object (e.g., cars, motorcycles, bicycles – not toys).
- As the object passes, hold the leash firmly. When your dog begins to chase, give the "Recall" command and press and hold Tone B and Stimulation Buttons until they stop. If they fail to stop, restrain them with the leash before they reach danger.
- When your dog stops chasing, immediately release the buttons, walk backward, and give the "Recall" command. Praise your dog as they come to you.
- If stimulation is ignored, repeat with a higher level.
- Repeat the process until your dog consistently responds to the "Recall" command.
