Cooktop Use

WARNING

Fire Hazard

Turn off all controls when done cooking. Failure to do so could result in death or fire.

Coil Elements and Burner Bowls (on some models)

Coil elements should be level for optimal cooking results. Burner bowls, when clean, reflect heat back to the cookware. They also help catch spills.

Cookware should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) over the coil element. If cookware is uneven or too large, it can produce excess heat, causing the burner bowl to change color.

  • Weight of the Cookware to be no Lighter than 1 lb.
  • Discoloration of Medallion of the Coil Element is expected over time.
  • Starting in June 2018 Whirlpool is equipping this product with new temperature-limiting coils pursuant to the updated standards in UL858. These new coils may vary cooking times compared to your old cooktop, e.g., a slightly longer time to boil large volumes of water.

Ceramic Glass

The surface cooking area may glow red when an element is ON. Some parts of the surface cooking area may not glow red when an element is ON. The glow will also randomly cycle off and back on again, even while on Hi, to keep the cooktop from extreme temperatures. This is normal operation.

It is normal for the surface of light-colored ceramic glass to appear to change color when surface cooking areas are hot. As the glass cools, it will return to its original color.

Clean the cooktop after each use to help avoid scratches, pitting, abrasions, and to condition the glass surface. Affresh® Cooktop Cleaner and the Cooktop Scraper are also recommended for stubborn soils. Do not use abrasive cleaners, cleaning pads, or harsh chemicals for cleaning. The Cooktop Care Kit contains all of the items needed to clean and condition your ceramic glass cooktop. Refer to the "Range Maintenance and Care" section in the Owner's Manual for additional information.

IMPORTANT: To avoid permanent damage to the cooktop surface and to make soils easier to remove, clean the cooktop after each use to remove all soils.

  • Avoid storing jars or cans above the cooktop. Dropping a heavy or hard object onto the cooktop could crack the cooktop.
  • To avoid damage to the cooktop, do not leave a hot lid on the cooktop. As the cooktop cools, air can become trapped between the lid and the cooktop and the ceramic glass could break when the lid is removed.
  • For foods containing sugar in any form, clean up all spills and soils as soon as possible. Allow the cooktop to cool down slightly. Then, while wearing oven mitts, remove the spills using a scraper while the surface is still warm. If sugary spills are allowed to cool down, they can adhere to the cooktop and cause pitting and permanent marks.

Cooktop Care and Usage Tips

  • To avoid scratches, do not slide cookware or bakeware across the cooktop. Aluminum or copper bottoms and rough finishes on cookware or bakeware could leave scratches or marks on the cooktop.
  • Do not cook popcorn in prepackaged aluminum containers on the cooktop. They could leave aluminum marks that cannot be removed completely.
  • To avoid damage to the cooktop, do not allow objects that could melt, such as plastic or aluminum foil, to touch any part of the entire cooktop.
  • To avoid damage to the cooktop, do not use the cooktop as a cutting board.
  • Use cookware about the same size as the surface cooking area. Cookware should not extend more than 1/2" (13 mm) outside the area.

Diagram showing cookware size relative to cooking area: A. Surface cooking area, B. Cookware/canner, C. 1/2" (1.3 cm) maximum overhang.

Use flat-bottomed cookware for best heat conduction and energy efficiency. Cookware with rounded, warped, ribbed, or dented bottoms could cause uneven heating and poor cooking results.

Determine flatness by placing the straight edge of a ruler across the bottom of the cookware. While you rotate the ruler, no space or light should be visible between it and the cookware.

Cookware designed with slightly indented bottoms or small expansion channels can be used.

Make sure the bottoms of pots and pans are clean and dry before using them. Residue and water can leave deposits when heated.

To avoid damage to the cooktop, do not cook foods directly on the cooktop.

Cooktop Indicator Lights

  • Cooktop On Indicator Light: Located on the console panel. Glows when any control knob/cooktop element is turned on.
  • Hot Surface Indicator Light: On ceramic glass models. Glows as long as any surface cooking area is too hot to touch, even after the surface cooking area is turned off.

Specialized Cooktop Elements

  • Dual Zone Cooking Element (on some models): Offers flexibility for different cookware sizes. Combines single and outer elements for larger cookware.
  • Melt Cooking Element (on some models): Provides a wide range of settings from High to Melt for boiling liquids or keeping foods warm.
  • Warm Zone (on some models): Keeps cooked foods warm for up to one hour. Does not heat cold foods. The zone does not glow red, but the Cooktop On indicator light will be displayed when in use.

Cookware Guide

IMPORTANT: Do not leave empty cookware on a hot surface cooking area, element or surface burner.

Ideal cookware should have a flat bottom, straight sides and a well-fitting lid, and be of medium-to-heavy thickness.

Rough finishes may scratch the cooktop. Aluminum and copper cores/bases can leave marks.

Cookware material affects heat transfer and cooking results. Nonstick finishes inherit the properties of their base material.

Nonstick cookware should not be used under the broiler.

Check cookware flatness with a ruler.

COOKWARE CHARACTERISTICS
Porcelain enamel-on-steel or cast iron See stainless steel or cast iron. Porcelain enamel bakeware without the metal base may bond to the cooktop if overheated.
Stainless steel Heats quickly, but unevenly. A core or base of aluminum or copper on stainless steel provides even heating.

To move a rack, pull it out to the stop position, raise the front edge, and then lift it out. Use the following illustration and chart as a guide for positioning racks.

Illustration showing rack positions 1 through 5.

Rack Position Type of Food
5 Broiling/searing meats, hamburgers, steaks, or toast.
4 Broiling thicker cuts of meat, poultry, fish, frozen prepackaged foods, most baked goods, and casseroles.
3 Air fry basket, frozen prepackaged foods, most baked goods, and casseroles.
1 or 2 Large roasts or poultry

Multiple Rack Cooking: For 2-rack cooking, use rack positions 2 and 4 or 2 and 5.

Bakeware

To cook food evenly, hot air must be able to circulate. Allow 2" (5 cm) of space around bakeware and oven walls. Make sure that no bakeware piece is directly over another.

Air Fry Basket

When using the Air Fry feature, position the air fry basket on top of a large baking sheet. Place basket and sheet in the middle of the oven to increase air flow and circulation. Avoid using more than one basket to avoid uneven cooking.

Baking and Roasting

Preheating

When beginning a Bake cycle, the oven will begin preheating after Start is pressed. The oven will take approximately 12 to 15 minutes to reach 350°F (177°C) with all oven racks inside. Higher temperatures will take longer.

The preheat cycle rapidly increases oven temperature. The actual oven temperature will go above your set temperature to offset heat lost when the door is opened to insert food. Insert food when the preheat tone sounds. Do not open the door during preheat before the tone sounds.

Oven Temperature

Elements cycle on and off to maintain temperature, but may run slightly hot or cool. Opening the oven door releases hot air and cools the oven, impacting cooking time. Use the oven light to monitor progress.

NOTE: On convection models, the fan may run in non-convection Bake mode. The convection fan shuts off when the oven door is opened. If the door remains open too long, heating elements shut off. Timers continue to count down.

Temperature Management System

Electronically regulates oven heat levels for precise temperature ranges. Bake and broil elements cycle on and off. On convection models, the fan runs during preheating and may cycle during bake.

Before baking/roasting, position racks. For roasting, it's not always necessary to wait for preheat to end unless the recipe recommends it.

Broiling

NOTE: Convection fan shuts off when the oven door is opened. If the door remains open too long, heating elements shut off. Timers continue to count down.

Preheat the oven for two minutes before broiling, unless the recipe states otherwise. Position food on a grid in a broiler pan in the center of the oven rack.

IMPORTANT: Close the door to ensure proper broiling temperature.

Changing broil temperature allows more precise control. Lower settings cook slower. Thicker or uneven pieces may cook better at lower broil settings. Use racks 4 or 5. Refer to "Positioning Racks and Bakeware" section.

On lower settings, the broil element cycles on and off.

For best results, use a broiler pan and grid to drain juices and minimize spatter/smoke. Broiler pans can be ordered separately.

NOTE: Odors and smoke are normal during initial uses or if the oven is heavily soiled.

Convection Baking, Roasting and Air Frying

NOTE: Convection fan shuts off when the oven door is opened. If the door remains open too long, heating elements shut off. Timers continue to count down.

During convection cooking, bake and broil elements cycle on/off while the fan circulates hot air.

If the oven door is opened during convection cooking/roasting, the fan turns off immediately and resumes when the door is closed.

IMPORTANT: Do not use a thermometer to measure oven temperature. Elements cycle on/off for consistent temperature but may vary slightly. Thermometers react slowly to temperature changes and may not provide accurate readings due to this cycling.

The oven provides accurate temperatures, but may cook faster or slower than your previous oven. Temperature can be adjusted for your cooking needs in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

To Adjust Oven Temperature:

  1. Press and hold Temp/Time "down" arrow for 5 seconds until display shows current setting (e.g., "0°F CAL" or "00").
  2. Press Temp/Time "up" or "down" arrow to increase/decrease temperature in 5°F (3°C) increments. Adjustment range: 30°F (18°C) to -30°F (-18°C).
  3. Press START.

Sabbath Mode

For guidance and model list, visit www.star-k.org.

Sabbath mode keeps the oven on a Bake setting until turned off. Oven Control Lockout is disabled. No tones, no temperature display, Kitchen Timer canceled. Only Temp/Time "up"/"down" and Cancel keypads function.

Oven light and heating elements do not turn on/off immediately when the door is opened/closed.

After power restoration, the oven returns to Sabbath mode with bake elements off until Cancel is pressed. Pressing Cancel returns to normal mode.

Decide oven light setting (on/off) before entering Sabbath mode; it remains constant. Door opening or pressing LIGHT does not affect the light once Sabbath mode is entered.

If the oven has Convection Bake, the oven light is controlled by a separate switch. If the light is ON when entering Sabbath mode, it remains ON.

In Holiday mode, temperature can be changed in 25°F (-4°C) increments using Temp/Time keypads. Press Start to activate. Display does not change, no sounds.

To Bake Using Sabbath Mode:

  1. Press BAKE.
  2. Press Temp/Time up or down arrow.
  3. Press Start.
  4. Press and hold TIMER SET/OFF for 5 seconds. "SAb" flashes.
  5. Press Start while "SAb" flashes to enter Sabbath mode. "SAb" stops flashing and remains on. Oven is now in Sabbath mode.

Pressing Cancel returns the oven to normal mode.

To Set a Timed Bake Using Sabbath Mode (on some models):

  1. Press BAKE.
  2. Press Temp/Time up or down arrow to enter a temperature.
  3. Press COOK TIME. Cook Time indicator lights up.

  5. Press Start.
  6. Press and hold TIMER SET/OFF for 5 seconds. "SAb" flashes.
  7. Press Start while "SAb" flashes to enter Sabbath mode. "SAb" stops flashing and remains on. Bake, On, and Cook Time indicators display.

When cook time ends, oven shuts off automatically. Pressing Cancel returns to normal mode.

To Set a Delayed Timed Bake Using Sabbath Mode (on some models):

  1. Press BAKE.
  2. Press Temp/Time up or down arrow to enter a temperature.
  3. Press COOK TIME. Cook Time indicator lights up.
  4. Press Temp/Time up or down arrow to enter cook time length.
  5. Press DELAY START. Delay indicator lights up.
  6. Press Temp/Time up or down arrow to enter start time.
  7. Press Start.
  8. Press and hold TIMER SET/OFF for 5 seconds. "SAb" flashes.
  9. Press Start while "SAb" flashes to enter Sabbath mode. "SAb" stops flashing and remains on. On and Delay indicators display.

When start time is reached, indicator lights turn on. When cook time ends, oven shuts off automatically. Pressing Cancel returns to normal mode.

Positioning Racks and Bakeware

Bakeware

For even cooking, hot air must circulate. Allow 2" (5 cm) of space around bakeware and oven walls. Ensure no bakeware piece is directly over another.

Air Fry Basket

When using Air Fry, place the basket on a large baking sheet. Position basket and sheet in the middle of the oven for increased air flow and circulation. Avoid using more than one basket to prevent uneven cooking.

Baking and Roasting

Preheating

When starting a Bake cycle, preheating begins after pressing Start. It takes approximately 12 to 15 minutes to reach 350°F (177°C) with all racks in place. Higher temperatures take longer.

The preheat cycle rapidly increases oven temperature, potentially exceeding the set temperature to offset heat loss from door opening. Insert food when the preheat tone sounds. Do not open the door before the tone.

Oven Temperature

Elements cycle on/off to maintain temperature, but may run slightly hot or cool. Opening the oven door releases hot air, affecting cooking time and performance. Use the oven light to monitor cooking progress.

NOTE: Convection fan may run in non-convection Bake mode for improved performance. The fan shuts off when the oven door is opened. If the door remains open too long, heating elements shut off. Timers continue to count down.

Temperature Management System

Electronically regulates oven heat for precise temperature ranges. Bake and broil elements cycle on/off. Convection models use the fan during preheating and may cycle it during bake.

Position racks according to the "Positioning Racks and Bakeware" section. For roasting, it's not always necessary to wait for preheat to end unless the recipe recommends it.

Broiling

NOTE: Convection fan shuts off when the oven door is opened. If the door remains open too long, heating elements shut off. Timers continue to count down.

Preheat oven for two minutes before broiling, unless recipe states otherwise. Position food on a grid in a broiler pan, centered on the oven rack.

IMPORTANT: Close the door for proper broiling temperature.

Changing broil temperature allows more precise control. Lower settings cook slower. Thicker or uneven pieces may cook better at lower broil settings. Use racks 4 or 5. Refer to "Positioning Racks and Bakeware" section.

On lower settings, the broil element cycles on/off to maintain temperature.

For best results, use a broiler pan and grid to drain juices and help avoid spatter and smoke. Broiler pans can be ordered separately; refer to Quick Start Guide for contact information.

During convection baking, roasting, or air frying, bake and broil elements/burners cycle on/off while the fan circulates hot air.

If the oven door is opened during convection baking or roasting, the fan turns off immediately and comes back on when the oven door is closed.

Cook Time (on some models)

  2. Press the Temp/Time "up" or "down" arrow keypad to enter a temperature.
  3. Press COOK TIME. The Cook Time indicator light will light up.
  4. Press the Temp/Time "up" or "down" arrow keypad to enter the length of time to cook.
  5. Press START. The display counts down the time. The oven shuts off automatically when time ends.
  6. Press CANCEL keypad to clear the display.

To Set a Delayed Timed Cook:

Before setting, ensure the clock is set to the correct time of day (see "Clock" feature in "Feature Guide").

  1. Press BAKE.
  2. Press the Temp/Time up or down arrow keypad to enter a temperature.
  3. Press COOK TIME. The cook time indicator light will light up.
  4. Press the Temp/Time up or down arrow keypad to enter the length of time to cook.
  5. Press DELAY START. The delay indicator light will light up.
  6. Press the Temp/Time up or down arrow keypad to enter the time of day to start.
  7. Press the START keypad.

When the start time is reached, the oven turns on automatically. Temperature and/or Cook Time settings can be changed anytime after the oven turns ON by repeating steps 2-4 and pressing Start. To change to a different delay time, cancel the feature and repeat steps 1-7. When the set cook time ends, the oven will shut off automatically. Press CANCEL keypad to clear the display.
