AE Series FIR Tuning Set for Crown DCI-N and DCI-DA Amplifiers

Instructions

Rev 20201216

FIR (Finite Impulse Response) tunings offer linear-phase filtering, optimizing frequency and phase response with greater precision than standard IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) "parameter-based" filters. This results in enhanced loudspeaker sound quality and more consistent coverage patterns.

FIR filters and limiters have been developed for numerous JBL AE Series loudspeakers and are specifically designed for use with Crown DCI-N and DCI-DA amplifiers. Direct links to AE Series Speaker Tunings for all listed AE Series models are available on the respective jblpro.com product pages under the 'Downloads' > 'Speaker Tunings' section. Applying these tunings requires HARMAN's free Audio Architect software.

Notes about Subwoofer Tunings

a) Below 300 Hz, FIR filters can introduce significant latency due to long wavelengths. For subwoofers, the FIR filter is primarily used to provide a consistent phase/delay profile with other AE Series models. This allows for more accurate setting of signal alignment delays based on path-length differences, reducing the need for field measurements. Other settings, like low-pass and high-pass filters, are implemented using standard IIR filters.

b) Subwoofer tunings do not automatically apply a high-pass filter to full-range speakers. The decision to add a high-pass filter to full-range speakers, and the type of crossover (symmetrical, full overlap, or hybrid), must be implemented manually on the respective amplifier channels.

Locked and Unlocked Functions

FIR Tunings are locked for Crossover Filter, Output EQ, and Driver Delay. Some settings, like limiters, are not locked but are recommended to remain as configured. Unlocked and user-adjustable settings include Source Routing, Input Delay, Input EQ, Output Limiter (pre-set to recommended values), and Channel Monitor Settings.

Important Note: Implementing an FIR tuning on one DCI amplifier channel locks these functions for all channels, regardless of whether they have a tuning applied. It is advisable to configure desired settings for other channels before applying the FIR tuning to the target channel.

HOW TO LOAD THE AE SERIES TUNING

  1. Download the 'AE Series' Speaker tuning file(s) and extract them.
  2. Place the extracted ".speakertuning" files in: C:\ProgramData\Harman Professional\Audio Architect. This is the default location for Audio Architect speaker tuning files.
  3. In Audio Architect, add a DCI-N or DCI-DA amplifier to the Room and double-click its icon.
  4. On the Device panel, navigate to File > Open > Speaker Tuning.
  5. Click "Yes" when prompted with the warning message about replacing settings.
  6. Audio Architect will open the specified folder. Highlight the AE Series speaker tuning file corresponding to your speaker model and click 'Open'. (If step 2 was not followed, you may need to manually navigate to the file's location.)

The tuning is now loaded but not yet selected for an amplifier channel.

  1. To select the tuning for an amplifier channel, double-click the 'SPKR' Processing Object on the Amplifier panel for that channel.
  2. Click the 'Recall' button, choose the matching tuning for the connected loudspeaker and/or mode, and click OK. Repeat for all channels connected to AE SERIES Loudspeakers. For multi-way modes (e.g., bi-amp), select the tuning that specifies the speaker and the frequency band connected to the amplifier channel.
  3. The preset will populate with the FIR filter and any associated limiter, crossover, and EQ settings. The preset is now active for that channel.

Important: FIR filters may not visually appear on all screens above 300 Hz as they differ from IIR filters. However, the filters are engaged. Additional filters and delays are available for on-site adjustments to suit the listening space and acoustic conditions.
