Clue Junior Board Game Instructions

Science Lab Mystery

LEVEL 2

Ages 5+

Compete to solve for WHO, WHAT, and WHERE.

Objective: Explore the school for clues to figure out WHO set off the volcano, WHAT they poured into it, and WHERE they should have been in class instead. Compete to solve the mystery on your own!

What You'll Need

  • Gameboard (depicting school rooms: Art Room, Classroom, Cafeteria, Library, Music Room, Principal's Office, Science Lab)
  • 6 character pawns (Scarlett, Mustard, Green, White, Plum, Peacock)
  • 6 furniture tokens (Glue, Glitter, Paint, Slime, Soap, Milk, Sand)
  • 1 die
  • Detective notepad sheets
  • 7 yellow bases
  • 7 white bases

Set It Up

  1. Place the gameboard faceup.
  2. Shuffle 6 yellow bases facedown. Place one in the center of the board (this is what was poured into the volcano).
  3. Place a furniture token into each of the remaining 6 yellow bases (without looking) and place each token in its matching room on the gameboard. Do not cover any spaces with furniture.
  4. Set aside the white base with the volcano. Shuffle the other 6 white bases facedown. Place one in the center of the board (this indicates the class the student should have been in).
  5. Mix the volcano base facedown with the remaining white bases. Place a character pawn into each (without looking). The character with the volcano is the student who set it off.
  6. Place all characters on their matching color start spaces. Everyone picks a character.
  7. Everyone takes a notepad sheet and pencil (not included). Fold the sheet to keep clues secret.

Play

The youngest player goes first, play moves to the left.

On Your Turn

  1. Roll the die.
    • If you roll a [icon: peek furniture]: Secretly peek under any furniture token.
    • If you roll a [icon: peek character]: Secretly peek under any character.
    • If you roll a number: Move your character up to that number of connecting spaces. You cannot land on a space occupied by another character or end your turn on your starting space.
  2. If you landed on a space after rolling a number, secretly peek under:
    • The furniture token in that room.
    • Any character.
    • Nothing! (If the space has no token or character)
  3. Mark your sheet: Each turn, cross out TWO things.
    • If you look under a yellow base: Cross out the object seen (cannot be what was poured) and the furniture in that base (you've checked that room).
    • If you look under a white base: Cross out the class object seen (cannot be the correct class) and the character in that base, UNLESS you find the volcano. Circle the character with the volcano.
    • Continue looking under characters even after finding the volcano to determine the correct class.

Ready to Solve the Mystery?

Make an accusation at any time on your turn:

  1. Say, "(WHO) set off the volcano using (WHAT) when they should have been (WHERE)."
  2. Secretly look under the bases in the center of the board and under the accused character.
  3. If correct: You've solved the mystery and won!
  4. If incorrect: You are out of the game. Do not reveal the solution. Others continue playing.

Playground Mix-Up

LEVEL 1

Ages 4+

Work together to solve for WHO and WHAT.

Objective: Work together to find items on the playground tiles and figure out WHAT item is missing and WHO took it. Win as a team!

What You'll Need

  • Gameboard (depicting a playground)
  • 6 character pawns (Scarlett, Mustard, Green, White, Plum, Peacock)
  • 6 blue bases (one has the backpack sticker)
  • 9 playground tiles (each with one item from the notepad)
  • 1 playground tile (contains the missing item)
  • 2 dice (number die, icon die)
  • Detective notepad sheets (themes: toys, art supplies, snacks, sports gear)

Set It Up

  1. Place the gameboard playground side faceup.
  2. Shuffle 8 playground tiles and place them facedown on the outlined playground spots.
  3. Place the remaining playground tile facedown next to the board (this is the missing item).
  4. Shuffle all 6 blue bases facedown. Place a character into each (without looking). The character with the backpack took the item.
  5. Place all characters on random, separate playground tiles. Everyone picks a character.
  6. Take one detective notepad sheet to share.

Play

The youngest player goes first, play moves to the left.

On Your Turn

  1. Roll the number die and move your character that many connected playground spaces.
  2. Now roll the icon die.
    • If you roll [icon: peek character]: Look under any character!
      • If no backpack: Cross that character off the notepad (they didn't take it).
      • If yes backpack: Circle that character (they have the item).
    • If you roll [icon: flip tile]: Flip over a playground tile on the board. Search for an item from your notepad sheet. Once found, cross it off your sheet. Keep the tile faceup.
    • You can choose either option.
  3. Next player's turn. Continue until all but one item is crossed off (the missing item) and you know which character has the backpack (the culprit).

Win

Once the mystery is solved (all but one item crossed off, culprit identified), reveal the missing item by flipping over the tile that was set aside. Great job working together!

Bonus Fun!

Use playground tiles for your own "find the object" games.
