Warnings and Cautions
Important Safety Information
Read these instructions carefully prior to starting up the unit. The water system requires utmost care and maintenance to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria, such as Legionella. Failure to maintain the system correctly can lead to the spread of dangerous bacteria. Decorative water nozzles can aerosolize water droplets containing harmful bacteria, posing a health risk.
The owner is responsible for the maintenance and care of the water system and its units in compliance with all applicable laws and directives. It is recommended to ensure the cleaning and care of the water system, water feature, and technical units. Keep records of maintenance and water tests.
Warning

- Do not exceed the voltage shown on the pump or light set transformer.
- Always disconnect from the power source before maintenance.
- Inspect cords for damage before installation/maintenance. Replace damaged components.
- Do not remove the grounding pin from the pump power cord plug.
- Do not submerge the transformer and sensor.
- Keep lamps away from flammable materials to reduce fire risk.
- This pump and light set has not been investigated for use in swimming pool or marine areas.
Caution
- This pump is evaluated for use with fresh water only.
- Use a proper power source as indicated on the pump and transformer labels.
- Keep cords away from high temperatures or heat sources.
- Do not let the pump run dry; it must be fully submerged for operation and cooling.
- Do not pump heated liquids.
- Operate in freshwater only. Avoid heavily chlorinated water and water with high pH levels.
- Do not lift the pump, lights, or transformer by the power cord.

Liner Installation Instructions
Always dig with caution. Call 811 or your local utility company before digging to locate buried pipes or power lines.
- Step 1: Mark the outline of your pond.
- Step 2: Dig out your pond, removing any debris or rocks that may damage your liner. Add approximately 2 inches of sand to the bottom of the pond and compress. This sand layer acts as a cushion. Alternatively, install underlayment in place of sand.
- Step 3: Open the liner and drape it across the pond area, ensuring at least 10 inches (ideally 1 ft.) of overlap around the perimeter. Begin filling the pond with water, smoothing out wrinkles as you go.
- Step 4: When the pond is full, bury the excess liner in a small trench around your pond with stones and rocks for a professional finish.
Operation Instructions – Pump, Filter, Nozzle Assembly, Tubing & Spitter
- Step 1: Place the pump inside the filter box, centered, with the outlet facing up. Route the power cord through the groove on the back corner of the filter box.
- Step 2: Place bio-balls around the pump.
- Step 3: Connect the extension tube to the pump outlet using the supplied adapters.
- Step 4: Tighten the locking nut for a secure fit.
- Step 5: Place the fine filter pad (blue) over the bio-balls and pump, then add the coarse filter pad (black) on top.
- Step 6: Place the lid over the box; it should snap closed.
- Step 7: Connect the extension tubes to the diverter valve. Ensure the arrow on the diverter valve is pointing upwards as shown.
- Step 8: Connect 1/2 in. ID tubing to the second output of the diverter valve. Connect the other end of the tubing to the Turtle Spitter.
- Step 9: Connect the fountain nozzle to the top of the extension tube.
- Step 10: Place the assembled filter kit in water. Arrange the Turtle Spitter near the edge of the pond so its mouth faces the pond.
- Step 11: Utilize the pivoting base to achieve a more vertical fountain display if needed.
- Step 12: Connect the pump into a properly grounded electrical outlet.
Note: You can adjust the flow control with the diverter valve as needed.
Operation Instructions – Lights
- Step 1: To use the dusk-to-dawn sensor, connect the lights to the sensor by pushing the plug into the sensor socket and hand-tightening the nut.
- Step 2: Connect the sensor to the transformer by pushing the plug into the transformer socket and hand-tightening the nut. If not using the sensor, connect the lights directly to the transformer and skip to step 4.
- Step 3: Ensure the transformer and sensor are not submerged and are facing up. Note: Lights turn on automatically at night and off at sunrise.
- Step 4: Place the lights in or out of the water. Plug the transformer into a properly grounded electrical outlet.
Pump Performance
- Max Flow Rate: 300 GPH at 0 ft. height
- Power Consumption: 23 watts / 0.4 amps
Light Performance
- Power Consumption: 0.2 watt (per light)
- Voltage: 12 volts
- Cord Length: 10 ft. cord from transformer to first light, 4 ft. between lights
Maintenance
Pump
Clean the pump when it is visibly soiled or when performance drops. Clean in 4 steps:
- Step 1: Disconnect the pump from the power source and remove the pump cover.
- Step 2: Remove the impeller cover to expose the impeller. Gently pull the impeller by its blades. The impeller is held by a magnet.
- Step 3: Use a soft cloth or brush and warm water to clean the impeller and the inside of the impeller housing.
- Step 4: Reassemble all pump parts and place in water before reconnecting to the power source.
Filter
- Clean filter pads periodically for optimal function. The coarse pad traps large debris, and the fine pad traps smaller particles. Wash pads with clean water when visibly soiled; weekly cleaning is recommended for best results.
- Always disconnect the pump from the power source before cleaning.
- Replace filter pads annually or when visibly deteriorating. Use smartpond® Replacement Filter Pads Model #52286.
- Clean the exterior of the filter box as needed, especially if openings are obstructed. Use only warm water; avoid chemicals that harm beneficial bacteria.
- Note: Bio-balls and the inside surfaces of the filter box contain beneficial bacteria. Disassemble and clean the entire system thoroughly with warm water at least once a year, preferably in early spring before water temperatures rise. This is also an ideal time to replace filter pads.
- Reassemble all parts and place in water before reconnecting to the power source.
Light Set
- Lights may require periodic cleaning for optimal performance.
- Always disconnect from the power source before cleaning.
- Use a soft cloth or brush and warm water to clean the parts.
- Reconnect to the power source when finished.
Troubleshooting
If the Pump Fails to Operate:
- Check that the power cord is plugged in and the pump is receiving power.
- Check the pump outlet, tubing, fountains, and spitters for kinks or obstructions.
- Remove the front cover, pump cover, and impeller cover to expose the impeller. Turn the impeller to ensure it is not broken or jammed.
If the Pump Performance is Not Satisfactory or Does Not Flow Evenly:
- Ensure the pump is completely submerged in water.
- Check that the impeller and impeller housing are clean.
- Adjust the flow control.
If Lights Fail to Illuminate:
- Check that lights are receiving power by testing another appliance in the same outlet.
- The light is designed to turn on when dark and off when light. To activate during daylight, cover the sensor.
- If lights do not turn off during the day, check the sensor. Ensure it faces up and is not covered by dirt or debris.
If Turtle Spitter Fails to Operate:
- Adjust flow control on the diverter valve to ensure water runs to the spitter.
- Check the spitter outlet, inlet, and tubing for kinks or obstructions.
