Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the OMRON HJ-321 Step Counter. This device features advanced 3D Smart Sensor technology for accurate step counting, superior to simple pendulum designs. It can be conveniently carried in a pocket, bag, or on a hip. The seven-day memory helps track daily activity to achieve fitness goals. Use this unit daily to monitor your fitness achievements.

- Battery (CR2032 installed)
- Screwdriver
- Holder
- Instruction Manual
Please read this instruction manual thoroughly before using the unit and keep it for future reference.

Operating the Device
- Contact your physician or healthcare provider before beginning a weight reduction or exercise program.
- Keep the unit out of reach of young children. The unit contains small pieces that may be swallowed. Immediately contact a physician if any piece is swallowed.
- Use caution when wearing the unit around your neck to avoid possible strangulation. Do not place the unit around the neck of children.
- If battery fluid gets into your eyes, immediately rinse with plenty of clean water and contact a physician.
- Read all information in this manual and any other included literature before using the unit. Operate the unit only as intended.
- If battery fluid gets on your skin or clothing, immediately rinse with plenty of clean water.
- Do not insert the battery with the polarities in the wrong direction.
- Do not throw the battery into fire, as it may explode.
- Dispose of the device, battery, and components according to applicable local regulations. Unlawful disposal may cause environmental pollution.
Care and Maintenance
- Do not disassemble or modify the unit. Changes or modifications not approved by Omron Healthcare will void the user warranty.
- Do not subject the unit to strong shocks, such as dropping it on the ground.
- Do not submerge the unit or any of its components in water.
Know Your Unit
Front of Unit
The front of the unit features a display screen. Below the display are three buttons: a [set/mode button]
, a [mem button]
, and a [mode button]
. A [low battery indicator]
is also visible.
Note: Remove the protective film from the face of the display.
Back of Unit
The back of the unit has a strap attachment point (strap not included) and a battery cover secured by a screw.
Components
The unit includes a holder. To attach or remove the holder, follow the illustrated steps. Note: When attaching the holder, do not grip it strongly at the top and bottom.
Stride Length Measurement
Measure your stride length before setting the step counter.
How to measure your stride length:
- Walk 10 steps with your normal stride.
- Measure the distance from START to END in meters.
- Calculate your stride length by dividing the total distance by 10. Example: Total distance = 5.5 m. Stride length = 5.5 m / 10 = 0.55 m (55 cm).
Settings
The unit comes with the battery installed. Follow these steps for initial setup. For setting range details, refer to "SPECIFICATIONS". Note: Incorrect initial settings may affect measurement accuracy.

until "lb" and "kg" flash on the display. - Setting the weight units:

to confirm the setting.

- To set the height/stride length unit, repeat steps A and B from step 2.
- To set the distance unit, repeat steps A and B from step 2.
- To set the time display, repeat steps A and B from step 2.
- Setting the weight:

to select the desired value for a setting.- Press

to advance (go back) one step. - Hold
[mode button]

down to advance (go back) rapidly.

- To set the height, repeat steps A and B from step 6.
- To set the stride length, repeat steps A and B from step 6.
- To set the hour, repeat steps A and B from step 6.
- To set the minute, repeat steps A and B from step 6.
All settings are completed.
Adjust the Settings
- Press and hold the
[set/mode button]
. "lb" or "kg" will flash on the display. - Follow the procedure from step 2 of "SETTINGS".
Using the Unit
The unit accurately counts steps when placed in a pocket, bag, or worn on the body. It can be placed in clothing pockets, a bag, or attached to a belt or pants. It can also be hung around the neck.
- Simply carry the unit with you wherever you go.
Note: To avoid counting non-walking movements, the unit does not display step counts for the first 4 seconds of walking. If you continue walking for more than 4 seconds, it displays the count for the initial 4 seconds and then continues counting.
- Press the
[mode button]
to read the data.
Conditions where the unit may not count steps correctly:
- Irregular Unit Movement: When the unit is in a bag that moves irregularly, or when the unit swings from a belt, pants top, or bag.
- Inconsistent Pace: Shuffling, wearing sandals, starting/stopping frequently, or other inconsistent walking patterns.
- Up and Down Movement: Standing up/sitting down, playing sports other than walking, ascending/descending stairs, or walking on steep slopes.
- Vibrations from a Moving Vehicle: Such as riding a bicycle, automobile, train, or bus.
- Walking Extremely Slowly.
Reading the Current Display
Press the [mode button]
to change the display.
- Step count display: Shows the number of steps taken.
- Distance display: Shows the distance covered.
- Calories display: Shows the estimated calories burned.
- Aerobic steps display: Shows steps counted towards aerobic activity.
- Time display: Shows the current time.
Calories
By measuring activity intensity, the unit estimates calories burned. Aerobic steps are counted when walking more than 60 steps per minute for over 10 consecutive minutes. Short rests (less than 1 minute) within a continuous walk are considered part of the continuous activity.
Battery Saving Mode
After 5 minutes of inactivity, the display turns off automatically to save battery. The unit continues to count steps. Press the [set/mode button]
or [mem button]
to reactivate the display.
Memory Function
The unit stores 7 days of measurements for steps, distance, calories, and aerobic steps. Current day's data is automatically stored when the time reaches 0:00 (12:00 AM). The display resets to 0. Note: The time must be set correctly.
- Press the
[mode button]
to select the type of measurement (steps, distance, etc.). - Press the
[mem button]
to view results from days 1-7.
Pressing and holding the [mem button]
cycles through the stored data until the current display is shown. Note: If no button is pressed for over 1 minute, the display returns to the current day's data.
Battery Life
If the [low battery indicator]
symbol blinks or appears, replace the battery with a new CR2032 battery. If the battery is removed, all settings and measurement values will be deleted; reset the settings as described in "SETTINGS".
Notes:
- Record measurement values before removing the battery if you wish to keep them.
- The supplied battery is for initial use and its life may be shorter.
Battery Replacement
- Loosen the screw on the battery cover on the back of the unit. Remove the cover by pulling it in the direction of the arrow. Use the supplied screwdriver or a small screwdriver.
- Remove the old battery with a toothpick. Note: Do not use metal tweezers or a metal screwdriver.
- Insert the new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Replace the battery cover by sliding the catch in first, then tighten the screw.
CAUTION: Dispose of the device, battery, and components according to applicable local regulations. Unlawful disposal may cause environmental pollution.
CAUTION: Do not throw the battery into fire. The battery may explode.
Care and Maintenance
To keep the unit in optimal condition and prevent damage:
CAUTION: Do not disassemble or modify the unit. Unauthorized changes void the warranty.
- Clean the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive or volatile cleaners.
- Do not immerse the unit or its components in water. The unit is not waterproof. Avoid contact with wet hands.
- Store the unit in a safe, dry location, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, high humidity, water, and dust.
- Avoid strong shocks, dropping, or stepping on the unit.
- Replace a worn battery immediately.
- Remove the battery if the unit will not be used for three months or longer.
- Use the unit only as instructed in this manual.
Troubleshooting Tips

Note: If a malfunction occurs requiring repair, all settings and measurement results are deleted. It is recommended to record measurement results.
