For cleaning, it is recommended to use a water softening filter (EAN: 8004399327252) available from DeLonghi.

2. Preparing the Appliance

  1. Wash all accessories with warm water and dish soap.
  2. Remove the water tank (A3) and fill it with fresh water, not exceeding the MAX level (see Figure 1 & 2).
  3. Insert the water tank back into place, ensuring the valves on the bottom connect properly (see Figure 3). Warning: Do not operate the machine without water in the tank or without the tank itself.
  4. It is recommended to adjust water hardness using the procedure described in section "9. Settings Menu".

3. First Use of the Appliance

  1. Plug the appliance into a power outlet and press the main switch (A6) (see Figure 4).
  2. The machine will perform self-diagnosis, indicated by blinking lights on the three buttons (see Figure 5).
  3. The indicators (B1, B3, B5) will blink while the machine heats up (see Figure 6). Once the indicators stop blinking, the machine is ready for circuit rinsing.
  4. Attach the filter holder to the machine by aligning it with "INSERT" and turning it clockwise until it locks in the "CLOSE" position (see Figure 7).
  5. Place a container of at least 0.5 liters under the coffee outlet unit (A5) and steam nozzle (A11) (see Figure 8).
  6. Press the single cup button (B1). Repeat this operation 5 times (see Figure 9).

The machine is now ready for operation. Note: Some water in the cavity under the tank is normal; dry it periodically with a sponge.

Making Coffee

3.1 Making Espresso with Ground Coffee

  1. Insert the single shot filter (C2) or double shot filter (C3) into the filter holder (C1) (see Figure 11).
  2. Fill the filter with ground coffee (see Figure 12). Ensure the coffee is finely ground, suitable for espresso.
  3. Distribute the ground coffee evenly and tamp it lightly with the tamper (C6) (see Figure 13). The coffee surface should be level. Add more coffee if necessary.
  4. Remove any excess coffee grounds from the filter holder rim and attach it to the machine (see Figure 7).
  5. Place one or two cups under the coffee outlets.
  6. Ensure the indicators for the coffee buttons are lit, then press the desired coffee button (B1 or B3) (see Figure 16).
  7. The machine will brew and stop automatically.
  8. To release the filter holder, turn the knob counter-clockwise.

Tips for better espresso:

  • For proper operation, always check the filter for residual coffee grounds from previous use.
  • You can stop the brewing process at any time by pressing the coffee button again.
  • To increase the coffee volume, press and hold the activated coffee button for 3 seconds; brewing will stop automatically after a few seconds.
  • Never remove the filter holder while the machine is brewing; wait a few seconds after brewing stops.

3.2 Making Espresso with ESE Pods

  1. Insert the ESE pod filter (C4) into the filter holder (C1) (see Figure 14).
  2. Place the ESE pod in the filter, centering it as much as possible (see Figure 15). Follow the pod manufacturer's instructions for correct placement.
  3. Attach the filter holder to the machine (see Figure 7).
  4. Place a cup under the filter holder spouts.
  5. Ensure the coffee button indicators are lit, then press the desired coffee button (B1) (see Figure 16).
  6. The machine will brew and stop automatically.
  7. To release the filter holder, turn the knob counter-clockwise.

3.2.1 Choosing ESE Pods

Use ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) pods that comply with the ESE standard, indicated by a specific symbol on the packaging. ESE is a system that allows for quick and easy espresso preparation.

Tips for ESE Pods:

  • Only one pod can be brewed at a time.
  • Brewing can be stopped at any time by pressing the coffee button again.
  • To increase coffee volume, press and hold the activated coffee button for 3 seconds.
  • Never remove the filter holder while the machine is brewing; wait a few seconds after brewing stops.
  • Refer to section "4.2 Tips for a hotter coffee" for additional advice.

Making Cappuccino

To make cappuccino, you first need to prepare espresso and then froth milk.

  1. If using tall glasses, remove the drip tray (A9) and place the glass on the special grid (A10) (see Figure 16).
  2. Prepare espresso as described previously, using sufficiently large cups.
  3. Fill the milk jug (C10) with cold milk (refrigerated temperature, approx. 5°C). The milk volume will increase 2-3 times when frothed.
  4. Press the steam button (B5). The indicator will blink. When the indicator lights up steadily, the machine is ready for steam dispensing.
  5. Place the milk jug under the steam nozzle (A11). Insert the nozzle into the milk and turn the steam adjustment knob (A12) to the steam position (see Figure 19).
  6. To froth the milk, immerse the steam nozzle just below the milk surface, allowing air to mix with the milk and steam.
  7. Keep the steam nozzle near the surface, avoiding excessive air intake that creates large bubbles.
  8. Once the desired foam is achieved, immerse the steam nozzle deeper into the milk to create a vortex.
  9. When the milk reaches the desired temperature, press the steam button again to stop the steam.
  10. Pour the frothed milk into the cups with the prepared espresso. Add sugar and chocolate sprinkles if desired.

Tips for optimal frothing:

  • Use cold milk (around 5°C) for dense, creamy foam.
  • Before frothing, purge the steam wand by briefly opening the steam knob to release any residual water. Close the knob before proceeding.
  • After frothing, clean the steam wand immediately with a damp cloth (see Figure 20).
  • Purge the steam wand again for a few seconds to clean the internal passages (see Figure 21).
  • Use the cleaning pin (C7) to keep the steam nozzle holes clear (see Figure 22).
  • After steaming, the machine may require a cooling cycle. Two indicators (e.g., B1 and B3) will blink simultaneously. Place an empty container under the steam wand and turn the steam knob to dispense hot water until the indicators stop blinking (see Figures 23 & 24).

Dispensing Hot Water

  1. Wait for the coffee indicators (B1 and B3) to light up steadily.
  2. Turn the steam adjustment knob (A12) to the steam position. Hot water will dispense from the steam nozzle (see Figure 32).
  3. Turn the knob back to the 0 position to stop the hot water flow.

Dispensing hot water is recommended for a maximum of 60 seconds.
