Airedale Ceiling Cassette Technical Manual
Models CSD, CSH and CCW
Document Number: AIR 8-105.11 | Date: June, 2023
Overview
The ceiling-mounted Cassette units provide independent temperature control for each area served. They offer thermostatic control for varying conditions to suit diverse requirements. Optional fresh air intakes are available for ventilation. Cassettes are available in three models: DX cooling, heat pump, or chilled water cooling, with optional electric or hot water heating. This design minimizes architectural compromise and can offer cost savings by reusing existing piping and wiring during modernizations. Airedale by Modine Cassettes incorporate design techniques to minimize noise, including low blower speeds, rigid construction, and sound-absorbent insulation. For individual comfort, units can be equipped with electro-mechanical or microprocessor-based controls, including infrared remote transmitters and compatibility with Building Management Systems via Carel microprocessor controls and network cards.
The Modine Breeze® AccuSpec program is a web-based tool for generating performance data based on actual job conditions, assisting in the configuration and selection of Airedale by Modine products. It can generate Submittal Schedules, Submittal Data, and Specifications.
As Modine Manufacturing Company has a continuous product improvement program, it reserves the right to change design and specifications without notice.

Standard Features
General Description – Ceiling Cassette Unit
Digit 2,3: Unit Configuration (UC)
- SD = DX Cooling: All direct expansion units feature a factory-installed thermal expansion valve and large surface area evaporator coils for optimal heat transfer and airflow. Coils are made from refrigeration-quality copper tubes with mechanically bonded aluminum fins.
- SH = HP Heating & Cooling: Similar to DX Cooling units, these also include a factory-installed thermal expansion valve and large evaporator coils made from copper tubes with mechanically bonded aluminum fins.
- CW = Chilled Water: Chilled water units use large surface area coils optimized for heat transfer and airflow. These coils are constructed from refrigeration-quality copper tubes with mechanically bonded aluminum fins and are circuited from headers to minimize water pressure drops.
Digit 4,5: Nominal Capacity (MBH)
Available capacities range from 08 (8,000 Btu/Hr) to 42 (42,000 Btu/Hr).
Digit 6: Supply Voltage (SV)
Available voltages include 115V/60Hz/1ph, 208V/60Hz/1ph, 230V/60Hz/1ph, 277V/60Hz/1ph, 110V/50Hz/1ph, and 220V/50Hz/1ph.
Digit 8: Control Code (CC)
- C = Modine Controls System: Units feature a programmable microprocessor controller with pre-engineered control strategies, requiring a wall sensor, thermostat, or network interface card.
- E = Electro-Mechanical Controls: Units are factory wired with an electro-mechanical system including relays and safety switches. A terminal strip is provided for wiring a 24V wall-mounted thermostat. Terminals for remote start/stop are included.
- M = Microprocessor Controls: A custom-designed microprocessor allows room conditions to be maintained at a user-defined setpoint via a handheld infrared transmitter. The system monitors indoor coil and return air temperatures and includes a self-diagnostic feature. Alarms are displayed on the fascia receiver for low indoor coil temperature or sensor failure. The infrared transmitter controls ON/OFF, temperature settings, fan speed, operating mode, and air sweep. A built-in clock with a timer function is also included.
Digit 9: Heating Option (HO)
- N = None: No heating option.
- A = Electric Heat: Factory-fitted electric heating elements with thermal cut-out protection.
- B = Hot Water Heating Coil - 4 Pipe: Includes a factory-fitted hot water heating coil (in addition to DX or chilled water coil) made of copper tubes and aluminum fins.
- C = Hot Water Heating - 2 Pipe (Uses CW Coil): A combined chilled water/hot water coil for 2-pipe systems, providing heating or cooling based on mode.
Digit 10: Filtration (F)
- A = 60-80% Arrestance (Standard): Reusable wire-framed filters, suitable for vacuum cleaning.
- B = MERV 10: 1-inch thick, radial pleated disposable filters with a MERV 10 rating.
Digit 11: Heat Freeze Protection (FP)
- N = None: No freeze protection.
- F = Hot Water Coil Freeze Protection: A sensor prevents hot water coil freezing by opening the flow control valve and stopping the fan if a freeze condition is detected.
Digit 12: Power Option (PO)
- N = None: No power disconnect option.
- D = Cassette Power Disconnect Switch: A disconnect switch on the control panel allows for power disconnection prior to maintenance.
Digit 13: Control Communication Option (CC)
- N = None: No communication option.
- B = BACnet IP Compatible Network Card: Allows compatibility with BACnet IP building management systems.
- M = BACnet MS/TP Compatible Network Card: Allows compatibility with BACnet MS/TP building management systems.
Construction and Components
Construction: Cases are made from lightweight galvanized sheet steel with integral fan mounting rails. Fire-resistant foam insulation provides thermal and acoustic insulation.
Fan: Backward curved centrifugal fans are statically and dynamically balanced for quiet operation. Impellers are aluminum or fire-retardant plastic. Fans are driven by an enclosed multi-speed external rotor motor with thermal overload protection and sealed bearings.
Condensate Pump: An integrated pump and check valve remove condensate. The pump is mounted on a removable bracket and includes a float switch to stop cooling if the pump fails.
Air Vanes: Outlet vanes prevent condensation. They are manually adjustable on models 08 and 12, and motorized on larger sizes, allowing auto sweep or fixed positions. Polystyrene blanking pieces are provided to block up to two fascia slots.
Alarm Status Relay: A relay provides unit failure notification, with a normally open contact available for field connection.
Accessories - Field Installed
Fresh Air Duct Collars
Available for units with fresh air knockouts. Allows connection of a 3" flexible duct. Includes a replacement filter for air balancing.
Supply Air Duct Collars
Allow for ducted conditioned air by removing branch duct knockouts (up to 2 per unit). Available for 5" or 6" flexible duct connection, depending on unit size. For models 08 and 12, it's recommended to use only one of the three knockouts due to unit capacity.
Shroud
A sheet metal shroud is available to cover the unit housing when not installed in a drop ceiling. It has a Painted Sky White with hammertone finish.
Control Valves
Three-way, three-port diverting or two-way, two-port control valves are supplied loose for on-site installation, actuated by a 24V signal. These are for controlling chilled water or hot water flow. Specific valve types (normally closed/open) depend on the system configuration (4-pipe, 2-pipe changeover).
Condensing Unit (for DX or Heat Pump units)
Refer to Breeze submittal for details.
Low Ambient Kit (Use with Condensing Units)
Provides fan speed control for compressor operation down to 0°F outside temperature.
