Setting Up Your Powerline Network

  1. Plug each Powerline adapter into a wall socket.
  2. Secure your Powerline network:
    • Ensure the Power LED on each adapter is solid green.
    • Press the Security button on the XAV5401 for 2 seconds, then release. The Power LED will blink green during pairing.
    • Within 2 minutes, press the Security button on the XWN5001 for 2 seconds, then release.

After a few seconds, the security is set, and the Power LED will be solid green, allowing secure communication between Powerline adapters.

Warning: Only press the Security button when the Power LED is solid green. Pressing too early may temporarily disable Powerline communication. Use the Reset button to restore defaults if this occurs.

  1. Plug the XAV5401 into a wall socket near your router or gateway.
  2. Connect the XAV5401 to the router or gateway's network port using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Plug the XWN5001 WiFi Access Point into a wall socket in a room where Wi-Fi coverage is needed.

Note: The XWN5001 has an additional Ethernet port to connect wired devices like gaming consoles or Blu-ray players to your network.

Configuring Wi-Fi Access on Your XWN5001

You can configure Wi-Fi access using NETGEAR genie or the browser setup guide.

Using NETGEAR genie:

  1. Install NETGEAR genie (see "Installing NETGEAR genie" section).
  2. Temporarily connect your computer directly to the XWN5001 via Ethernet.
  3. Launch NETGEAR genie and click on Network Map.
  4. Click the Powerline icon on the Network Map screen.
  5. Right-click the XWN5001 icon and select Wireless Configuration from the context menu.

Note: For advanced wireless settings, double-click the device icon and select the IP address. Default login is admin/password.

Enter the following wireless settings:

Example settings: SSID: Netgear_EXT, Security Type: None.

If a NETGEAR router is on your network, the setup wizard can quickly configure the XWN5001 as a wireless accelerator. Alternatively, for advanced setup, click the provided link to access the XWN5001's web page.

You can either clone your existing wireless network by entering the same settings as your router/gateway, or create a new wireless network for a second Wi-Fi zone in your home.

  1. Click Apply to save changes.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the XWN5001 when finished.

You can now connect your wireless devices to the XWN5001. Refer to the "Connecting to the XWN5001 Access Point" section.

Using the Browser Setup Guide:

  1. On your computer or wireless device, connect to the XWN5001's wireless network. The default SSID is NETGEAR_EXT. The default network key (password) is printed on the back of the XWN5001.
  2. Open a web browser and navigate to www.mywifiext.net or www.netgearextender.net.
  3. Log in using username: admin and password: password.

The browser setup guide allows you to configure the XWN5001's wireless settings. You can clone your existing network settings or create new ones.

You can now connect your wireless devices to the XWN5001. Refer to the "Connecting to the XWN5001 Access Point" section.

Connecting to the XWN5001 Access Point

Manual Connection:

  1. On your computer or wireless device, launch the wireless connection management utility.
  2. Connect to the XWN5001 wireless network (SSID).
  3. Enter the network key (passphrase).

Your wireless device is now connected to the XWN5001 and you can browse the web.

Automatic Connection using WPS Button:

  1. Press and hold the Security button on the XWN5001 for approximately 2 seconds, then release. The Wireless LED will start blinking.
  2. Press the WPS button on your wireless device for 2 seconds, then release.

When the Wireless LED stops blinking, your wireless device is automatically connected to the XWN5001, and you can browse the internet.

Installing NETGEAR genie

  1. Go to http://support.netgear.com in your browser's address bar.
  2. Click the For Home button.
  3. In the search field, enter xwn5001.
  4. Download the NETGEAR genie version compatible with your operating system (Windows or Mac).
  5. Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install NETGEAR genie.

Compatible NETGEAR Powerline Devices

Your Powerline devices can share a Powerline network with compatible NETGEAR devices including: XAVB1301, XAVB1401, XAVB2101, XAVB2602, XAVNB2001, XAVB5601, XAVB5101, XAVB5201, XAVB5602, XAUB2511, XAVB5004, XAVB1004, XAVB5401, XWNB5201, and XWNB1601.
