This guide provides comprehensive instructions for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting your RCA Color TV.

Operate TV only on 120 volts, 60 Hz AC power (normal house power).

FCC Regulations state that unauthorized changes or modifications to this equipment may void the user's authority to operate it.

CAUTION: If fixed (non-moving) images are left on the screen for long periods, they may be permanently imprinted on the screen. Such images include network logos, phone numbers, and video games. Extended viewing of channels displaying these images should be avoided.

Note To Cable TV Installer: This reminder is provided to call your attention to Article 820-40 of the National Electrical Code (Section 54 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1) which provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building as close to the point of cable entry as practical.

Quick Guide to Your TV

The steps below will get your TV connected and ready for watching. For more details, see the page numbers listed.

Startup

  1. Hook up your TV: Details are in the Connections Guide. Hook up any antennas, cables or other equipment to your TV before you follow the steps below.
  2. Plug in the TV: Plug the cord into the outlet, matching the wide and the small end of the plug with the outlet.
  3. Put Batteries in the Remote: A. Pull off the cover of the battery compartment. B. Place the four AAA batteries as shown, matching the + and - end of each battery in the compartment. C. Replace the cover.
  4. Turn on the TV: Press POWER on the remote or on the TV.
  5. Place all available channels in memory (Autoprogram): Details for adding and deleting channels are on page 19. A. Press MENU•PROG until the Setup menu is selected. B. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Autoprogram. C. Press MOVE ➡️ to start placing channels in the TV's memory. D. Wait until TV has cycled through all the channels and returns to original channel.
  6. Set the Time: A. Press MENU•PROG until the Alarm menu is selected. B. The Clock is automatically highlighted the first time you set it. If it is not, press MOVE ⬆️ to highlight it. C. Press MOVE ➡️ to set the hour. D. Press MOVE ⬇️ to set the minutes. F. Press CLEAR to remove the menus from the screen, or the menus will automatically disappear after a brief period.

Basic Tour of the Remote

This section provides a general idea of how your remote works. For more details, see pages 6-15.

  • TV Power Button: Turns the TV on. Sets the remote to control the TV.
  • Volume and Channel Controls: Operates TV when remote is set to control the TV. Operates the TV and advanced features.
  • Component Buttons: Controls components such as a VCR, laserdisc player, audio equipment, satellite receiver, and a cable box.
  • Menu Buttons: Changes the menus and features on the screen.

Menu Basics

General information about using the on-screen menu system. Details on using the remote buttons are on pages 6-7. Many menu items are explained in detail in Using the Advanced Features starting on page 19.

  • Colors: Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to see each of the four menu colors. Each menu has a different color background.
  • Menu Buttons: Used to adjust features in the TV's menus. Both remote and front panel buttons work.
  • Moving through the Menus: 1. Press MENU•PROG to move from menu to menu. 2. Press MOVE ⬆️/⬇️ to move up and down through features. 3. Press MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to move left and right on menu lines.

Using Your TV and Remote

With Remote Buttons

This section details the functions of each button on the remote control.

  • POWER: Turns the TV or compatible components off/on.
  • AUDIO, VCR1, VCR2•LD, SAT•CABLE, TV: Sets the remote to control the selected component.
  • TV: Turns on the TV, shows displays, and sets the remote to control the TV.
  • REW (Rewind): Rewinds a tape or laserdisc. Searches backward during playback.
  • PLAY: Plays tape or laserdisc.
  • FF (Fast Forward): Fast forwards a tape or laserdisc. Searches forward during playback.
  • REC (Record): Starts recording onto tape.
  • STOP: Stops tape or laserdisc playback/recording.
  • PAUSE: Pauses tape or laserdisc playback.
  • DISPLAY: Shows displays on the screen. Clears menus.
  • SKIP (Commercial Skip): Scans channels during commercials. Each press adds 30 seconds. Press CLEAR to cancel.
  • CHAN ⬆️/⬇️: Scans up/down through TV channels. Moves through VCR channels.
  • VOL ➡️/⬅️: Raises/lowers sound. Moves left/right on menu lines.
  • MUTE: Switches TV sound on or off.
  • PREV CH: Switches back and forth between two channels.

With VCRs: Programming the Remote

Refer to your VCR's owner's manual. The remote may need programming for your VCR. Use the codes below or on the sheet packed with your remote.

To Program the Remote for Your VCR:

  1. Point the remote at the VCR and hold VCR1 or VCR2•LD.
  2. Enter the code for your brand from the list.
  3. Release VCR1 or VCR2•LD.
  4. Press POWER. If nothing happens, try pressing VCR1 and then POWER.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 with another code if the first one does not work or if a second VCR is connected.

With VCRs: Setting the VCR 1 Channel

This feature works with the VCR1 button. Pressing VCR1 selects the channel to see the VCR picture. The setting depends on the diagram used from the Connection Guide. Set to 'Disable' to turn off.

  1. Select the Setup Menu: Press TV to set remote to control TV. Press MENU•PROG to select the Setup menu (white).
  2. Highlight VCR1 Channel: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight VCR1 Channel. Press MOVE ➡️ to highlight the channel.
  3. Enter channel number: Enter 00, 03, or 04. Choose from the chart below. Press CHANNEL down until "Disabled" is displayed to turn off.

With VCRs: Basic Operation

If the remote operates your VCR, use these basic functions.

  • Turn on the VCR: Press channel 00, 03, or 04 on TV. Press VCR1 or VCR2•LD to control VCR. Press POWER to turn on VCR if needed.
  • Turn off the VCR: Press VCR1 or VCR2•LD to control VCR. Press POWER.
  • Record one TV program and watch another: Press VCR1 or VCR2•LD. Tune VCR to desired channel using CHANNEL or number buttons. Press RECORD. Press TV/VCR on VCR. Press TV to control TV. Press CHANNEL to change TV channels. Tune TV back to channel 00, 03, or 04 to see recording.
  • Watch a tape in your VCR: Turn on VCR. Insert tape. Press PLAY. Press STOP when finished. Press REW to rewind.

With a Satellite Receiver: Basic Operation

You may use the TV remote with satellite receivers. Refer to your Satellite Receiver owner's manual. The remote may need programming.

Program the remote for your Satellite Receiver:

  1. Point the remote at the satellite receiver and hold SAT•CABLE.
  2. Enter the code for your brand from the code list below.
  3. Release SAT•CABLE.
  4. Press POWER. If nothing happens, try pressing SAT•CABLE and then POWER.

With a Cable Box: Programming and Basic Operation

Refer to your cable company. This remote may not operate all models. Use codes below or on the sheet packed with your remote.

Program the remote for your cable box:

  1. Point the remote at the cable box and hold SAT•CABLE.
  2. Enter the code numbers for your brand from the list below.
  3. Release SAT•CABLE.
  4. Press POWER to turn it on. If nothing happens, try pressing SAT•CABLE and then POWER.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 with another code if the first one does not work.

  2. Enter the code for your brand from the code list below.
  3. Release VCR2•LD.
  4. Press POWER. If nothing happens, try pressing VCR2•LD and then POWER.

Program the remote for audio equipment:

  1. Point the remote at the audio equipment and hold AUDIO.
  2. Enter the code from the code list.
  3. Release AUDIO.
  4. Press POWER to turn it on. If nothing happens, try pressing AUDIO and then POWER.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 with another code if the first one does not work.

Adjusting Your TV

Overall Picture

Follow the steps below to lighten or darken the overall picture without changing color levels.

  1. Select the Controls Menu: Press MENU•PROG to select the Controls menu (yellow).
  2. Highlight Picture: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Picture.
  3. Use MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to adjust the Picture: Press MOVE ➡️ to lighten, or MOVE ⬅️ to darken.

Picture Settings

Change picture settings to your preference. The chart below explains options.

  1. Select the Adjust Menu: Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to select the Adjust menu (light blue).
  2. Highlight item to change: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight the picture item.
  3. Use MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to adjust each item:

Sound Settings: Stereo and Tone

Adjust Stereo or Tone settings. The chart below explains options.

  1. Select the Controls Menu: Press MENU•PROG to select the Controls menu (yellow).
  2. Highlight item to change: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight the sound item.
  3. Use MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to adjust each item:

Using Advanced Features

Placing Channels in Memory (Autoprogramming)

Only channels 2-13 appear in memory initially. Program available channels for your area. Use CHANNEL up/down to scan.

You may add or delete channels if stations have weak signals or were off air during programming. Refer to Add or Delete Channels section.

  1. Place channels in memory (Autoprogram): A. Hook up antenna, cable, or components first. B. Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to select Setup Menu and highlight Autoprogram (white). C. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Autoprogram. D. Press MOVE ➡️ to start adding active channels. E. Wait until TV cycles through all channels and returns to original channel.
  2. Add or delete channels: A. Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to select Setup menu (white). B. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Channel Memory. C. Press MOVE ➡️ to underline channel number. D. Select channel number with number buttons. E. Press MOVE ➡️ to add or delete (Stored/Erased appears). F. Repeat D and E for more channels.

Naming the Channels

Name at least 20 channels with four characters each. 'Full' appears when memory is used. 'Fixed' when a channel cannot be named. Characters available:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ & '()á+,-./0123456789:;<= > ? @ blank space

  1. Name a channel: A. Press MENU•PROG to select Setup menu (white). B. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Label. C. Press MOVE ➡️ to underline channel number. D. Select channel number. E. Press MOVE ➡️ to underline first character. F. Choose character using MOVE ⬆️/⬇️. G. Repeat E-F for name. H. Press MOVE ⬅️ to move backward to change an item.
  2. Erase a name: A. Follow A and B above. B. Press MOVE ➡️ until 'clear' is underlined. C. Press MOVE ⬆️/⬇️ to clear the name.

Setting the Sleep Timer

Set your TV to turn itself off. If you fall asleep watching TV, it will turn off for you.

  1. Set Sleep Timer: A. Press MENU to select Controls menu and highlight Sleep Timer (yellow). B. Press MOVE ➡️ to enter desired time (each press is 15 minutes). C. Press MOVE ⬅️ to subtract time.
  2. Add more time: When 0:01 appears, TV shuts off in one minute. Press MOVE ➡️ to add time.
  3. Cancel the Timer: A. Press MENU to select Controls menu and highlight Sleep Timer. B. Press MOVE ⬅️ until time reaches - : --.

Setting the Alarm Clock

Set TV to turn on daily at a specific time to your favorite channel, or turn itself off. Alarm requires clock to be set.

  1. Turn on the Alarm: A. Press MENU to select Alarm menu and highlight Alarm (green). B. Press MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to select On or Off.
  2. Set the Alarm Channel: A. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Alarm Channel. B. Press MOVE ⬆️ to highlight channel number. C. Enter desired channel number.
  3. Set On and Off Times: A. Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight On or Off Time. B. Press MOVE ➡️ to set the hour. C. Press MOVE ⬇️ to set the minutes. D. Press and hold MOVE ➡️ to choose 'Disabled' (turns TV on/off only at set times daily).

Selecting a Language

On-screen displays can be in English, French, or Spanish. Select your preferred language.

  1. Select the Setup menu: Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to select Setup menu (white).
  2. Select Language: Press MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to select English, Français (French), or Español (Spanish).

Watching Closed Captioning

Closed captioning displays audio as text. Useful for deaf/hearing impaired or watching without sound. If CC doesn't appear, it's not available on the channel. This TV does not support text mode.

  1. Select the Controls Menu: Press MENU•PROG to select Controls menu (yellow).
  2. Highlight Closed Captioning: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Closed Captioning.
  3. Select Setting: Press MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to select Off, C1, or C2. C1 for primary language translation, C2 for secondary/simplified English, or broadcast language.

Setting Your TV for Antenna or Cable

TV adjusts this feature automatically during Autoprogram. Change setting as needed.

  1. Select the Setup menu: Press MENU•PROG repeatedly to select Setup menu (white).
  2. Highlight Cable/Air: Press MOVE ⬇️ to highlight Cable/Air.
  3. Select Cable or Air: Press MOVE ➡️/⬅️ to select Cable or Air. Select Cable if you have cable. Select Air if you have a home antenna.

Front Panel Buttons

CHANNEL and VOL buttons work like MOVE buttons in menus. See Menu Basics on page 5 for details.

  • MENU: Shows menus, moves between them.
  • CH ⬆️/⬇️: Channel up/down. Moves up/down menus.
  • VOL ➡️/⬅️: Volume up/down. Moves left/right on menu lines. Changes feature settings.
  • POWER: Turns TV on or off.

Trouble Checks

Fix minor problems with these adjustments.

  • Power: TV will not turn on
    • Plug TV in. Check outlet with another device.
    • Ensure remote batteries are not dead. Aim remote at TV and press POWER.
    • Check battery placement in remote.
    • Unplug TV for a few minutes, then plug back in.
  • No picture, no sound but TV has power
    • Check antenna connections.
    • Check Cable/Air feature setting (page 24).
    • Try another channel.
    • Ensure component connected to VIDEO INPUT is on if channel 00 is selected.
    • Ensure TV/VCR switch on VCR is in TV position if watching VCR.
    • Ensure TV is tuned to the same channel as the VCR switch.
  • Picture: Blank screen or Unusable Signal appears
    • Try another channel.
    • Scan channels.
    • Check antenna connections.
    • Adjust TV picture (pages 16-17).
  • Picture poor, sound okay
    • Adjust TV picture (pages 16-17).
  • Sound: Noisy stereo reception
    • Turn Stereo off (page 18).
  • Picture okay, no sound
    • Press VOLUME ⬆️ or MUTE.
  • Picture okay, sound poor
    • Try another channel.
    • Adjust Stereo or Tone (page 18).
    • Change Stereo to off.
  • No stereo on stereo station
    • Ensure Stereo is turned on (page 18).

Remote: Buttons don't work

  • Press TV to set remote to control TV (page 6).
  • Clear path between remote and TV. Aim remote correctly.
  • Ensure batteries are not dead and are placed correctly (page 2).

Remote lockup

  • Remove batteries, hold buttons for seconds to drain microprocessor, reset. Re-install batteries.

Works part or none of the time

  • Aim remote at component.
  • Ensure batteries are not dead and are placed correctly (page 2).

Can't select certain channel

  • Press number buttons. Channel may not be in memory. See Autoprogram (page 19).
  • Ensure TV/VCR switch on VCR is in TV position if using VCR.
  • For channels over 100, press and hold 1 until 1-- appears, then enter other two numbers.
  • Set Cable/Air to Cable for channels > 69 (page 24).

TV Turns on or off

  • Turns off by itself: Check Sleep Timer (page 21). Wait 30 seconds and turn on again (power surge). Check Alarm Off time (page 22).
  • Turns on by itself: Check Alarm On Time (page 22). Check clock time (page 3).
  • Does not turn off at Alarm Time: Ensure alarm is on/off (page 22). Check clock time (page 3). Ensure Clock time is set correctly (AM/PM). Check Alarm Off time.

Limited Warranty

What your warranty covers: Any defect in material or workmanship.

How long after your purchase: 90 days for labor charges. One year for parts. Two years for picture tube. Warranty for rental units begins with the first rental.

What we will do: Pay for authorized service center labor, replacement parts, and picture tube repairs.

How you get service: For 20" and smaller screens, take to an Authorized RCA Television Servicenter. For larger screens, request in-home service. Find a servicer by asking your dealer, checking Yellow Pages, or calling 1-800-336-1900. Show proof of purchase date.

What your warranty does not cover: Customer instruction (refer to Owner's Manual), installation, adjustments, Acts of God (lightning), signal reception problems not caused by TV, damage from misuse/neglect, remote control batteries, modified/incorporated TVs, TVs used for institutional/commercial purposes, TVs purchased/serviced outside USA.

What to do with the Product Registration Card: Complete and mail the card. It helps contact you if necessary. Return is not required for warranty coverage.

How state law relates to this warranty: This warranty gives specific legal rights, and you may have other rights varying by state.

If you purchased your product outside the USA: This warranty does not apply. Contact your dealer for warranty information.
