AS5601 Standard Board Evaluation Kit Manual

Published by ams OSRAM Group

1 Introduction

The evaluation kit allows for easy and fast evaluation of the AS5601 rotary magnetic position sensor in a lab environment or integrated with an existing system. It includes all necessary materials to evaluate the product's features.

The small adapterboard is fully assembled with the AS5601 position sensor and its essential external components. All relevant signals are accessible via a dual-row 2.54mm 4-pin header footprint, allowing for easy integration into existing applications.

The USB I&P Box serves as an easy-to-use programming and demonstration tool, enabling device configuration and the programming of specific settings.

A small magnet holder and a knob with an attached magnet are included to demonstrate the functionality of the AS5601. The AS5601 is an easy-to-program magnetic rotary position sensor featuring incremental quadrature (A/B) outputs and 12-bit digital outputs via I²C. Additionally, its PUSH output signals rapid airgap changes between the AS5601 and the magnet, which can be utilized for a contactless pushbutton function by pressing the knob to move the magnet closer to the AS5601. Based on planar Hall technology, this device measures the orthogonal component of the flux density (Bz) from an external magnet while effectively rejecting stray magnetic fields. The I²C interface is used for configuration and user programming of the AS5601's non-volatile parameters.

2 Getting Started

The AS5601 adapter board is ideal for rapid setup of a contactless potentiometer, as it provides all necessary tools to operate and configure the AS5601. The following steps describe how to connect and use the USB I&P Box with the AS560X Demo Software and the adapter board.

1st Install the AS560X Demo Software

The software is provided on the USB drive included with the USB I&P Box, or it can be downloaded from the ams AG webpage. After installation, launch the software.

2nd Assemble the Hardware Setup

Follow the instructions shown in Figure 1 to set up the kit.

Figure 1: Setup Instructions

Diagram Description: The setup involves connecting the AS5601 adapterboard (A), the USB I&P Box (B), and the Rotary Magnet Holder with Knob (C). A USB cable (D) connects the I&P Box to a computer.

Component A (Adapterboard): Features the AS5601 sensor, header pins labeled VDD, SCL, SDA, GND, URG, BA, PUSH, and jumpers J1, J2, J3. Capacitors C1, C2 and resistors R1, R3 are also visible.

Component B (USB I&P Box): A black rectangular device with a USB connector and a 10-way cable connector.

Component C (Rotary Magnet Holder): Includes a knob and an attached magnet.

Component D (USB Cable): Connects the USB I&P Box to the computer.

Setup Steps:

  1. A. Short J1 on the adapterboard to configure the 3.3V mode.
  2. B. Connect the USB I&P Box to the AS5601-SO_EK_AB using the 10-way cable.
  3. C. Place the RMH05 (Rotary Magnet Holder) over the adapterboard.
  4. D. Connect the USB I&P Box to the computer using the USB cable. The USB device will be detected by Windows and the AS560X Demo Software. The setup is now ready for demonstration.

Notes:

  • The AB signals of the quadrature incremental interface may not be detected with the initial version of the USB I&P Box.
  • A firmware update for the USB I&P Box might be necessary if an incorrect firmware version is detected. The user will be prompted to allow an automatic firmware upgrade in such cases.

3rd Start using the software

The following software functions are used to perform configuration and read data from the AS5601. Refer to Figure 2 for visual guidance. Consult the software user manual for detailed instructions.

  1. Perform the desired configuration.
  2. Execute the required grid and grid offset programming. Utilize the wizard function for assistance.
  3. Verify the results.

Figure 2: General Software Instructions

Diagram Description: The screenshot displays the AS560X Demo Board Software interface, divided into sections for configuration and data visualization.

Section C (Left Panel): Features a circular gauge showing the magnetic angle, with a pointer indicating the current angle (e.g., 150.8°). Below the gauge are meters for AGC (value 99) and Magnitude (value 2109). Status indicators like "Ready" and the software version "AS5601 Rev. 0.1.8" are also present.

Section A (Top Right Panel): Contains configuration parameters:

  • Power mode: NOM
  • Watch dog: Enabled
  • Resolution: 4 Bit
  • Hysteresis: off
  • Push threshold: 10
  • Fast Filter threshold: slow filter only
  • Slow Filter: 16x (forced for LPM)

A "Burn Settings" button is available.

Section B (Bottom Right Panel): Displays current readings and programming options:

  • Magnetic angle: 150.8°
  • Grid Offset: 5.0
  • Burn Positions button, indicating "2 burns remaining".
  • A "Grid Offset Wizard" button.
