EmpirBus Graphical Tool User Manual

A guide to designing and editing layouts for Raymarine Digital Switching (RMDS) on Multifunction Displays (MFDs).

Introduction

The EmpirBus Graphical Tool, developed by Trigentic AB, Sweden, is a software application designed for creating and modifying custom layouts for Raymarine Digital Switching (RMDS) systems. These layouts are displayed on Raymarine Multifunction Displays (MFDs).

For additional information and legal notices, please visit the official EmpirBus homepage at www.empirbus.com.

Prerequisites and System Requirements

Software

The software is optimized for Microsoft Windows 7 and later versions. It is recommended to have image editing software installed for creating and modifying graphics. Recommended open-source options include GIMP (www.gimp.org) and Inkscape (www.inkscape.org).

To start a new project, an EmpirBus Project (EBP) file, created with the EmpirBus Studio software, is required. Contact an EmpirBus dealer for assistance with EBP files.

Ensure your MFD is updated to LightHouse II. Updates can be found at www.raymarine.com.

Hardware

In addition to a PC running Windows 7 or later, a microSD card and a microSD card reader are necessary for transferring project files to the MFD.

Designing a New Project

Planning

When designing layouts, consider the varying aspect ratios and resolutions of different MFD models. Recommended graphic file formats are PNG for transparency support and JPG for solid backgrounds.

The maximum MFD screen resolution is $1280 imes 800$. While the software can scale images, scaling up may reduce image quality. It is possible to upload layouts designed for one resolution to an MFD with a different resolution, but this may cause distortion.

Creating a New Project File

Navigate to 'File' > 'Create New Project'. Save the project file with a relevant name (max 28 characters, using a-z, A-Z, 0-9, ., -, _). Then, import the EBP file via 'Import' > 'Import EmpirBus Project File'.

Basic Design

Signal Types

The software supports various signal types for interactive elements, including Pulse Buttons, Momentary Switches, Rotary Switches, Dimmer Controls, and Signal Values. Each type offers specific functionalities for controlling and displaying information.

Images and Texts

The tool supports PNG, JPG/JPEG, and SVG image files. PNG is preferred for its transparency capabilities. Text can be added directly within the software or imported as images.

NMEA2000 PGNs

The software can display live data, including analog battery status and fluid level indicators, using NMEA2000 PGNs.

Uploading Layout to MFD

Preparation

Place the layout file (ZIP format) in the root directory of a microSD memory card. Ensure the file is not extracted.

Installing the Layout

From the MFD home screen, navigate to 'Set-up' > 'System Settings' > 'External Devices' > 'Switch Panel Set-up'. Use the 'Uninstall Config File' option if available, then select 'Install Config File'. Choose the memory card and the layout file. Follow on-screen prompts to complete the installation. The new layout can be accessed via the 'Switch Panel' icon on the MFD's homescreen.
