General Information
The QS30AF is an easy-to-use triangulation sensor that offers a sophisticated and cost-effective solution for demanding applications. The sensor features two identically configured outputs, one NPN and one PNP. The compact sensor housing includes a large, easy-to-view bar graph display and bright LEDs that facilitate setup and status monitoring during operation. The sensor can be mounted sideways using its integrated mounting holes or front-mounted via the 30 mm threaded barrel.
QS30 Features:
- Yellow Indicator: Output
- Green Indicator: Power ON
- Bar Graph Display: Setup indicators
- Buttons: Setpoint, Configuration
- Indicators: Delay, Normally Closed, Normally Open
Optical Triangulation
The QS30's function is based on optical triangulation. The emitter and optical system create a light beam directed at an object. Light from the object reflects off the object, scattering some light through another lens to the sensor's position-sensitive detector (PSD). The object's distance from the receiver determines the angle of the returning light relative to the detector. This angle determines where the returning light falls along the PSD. The light position on the PSD is processed by analog and digital electronic systems and analyzed by the microprocessor, which calculates the appropriate output value.
Diagram: Optical triangulation used to determine sensing distance. Shows emitter, lenses, object, receiver (PSD), and output circuits.
Sensor Setup
The sensor's setpoint is adjusted using a simple procedure, via the buttons or remote lead. Three methods are available: Background Suppression, Object Detection, and Dynamic Configuration (remote only). Once the sensor is set for the desired application, manual adjustments (using the + and - buttons) can be made to fine-tune the setpoint. The sensor's output configuration (N.O./N.C.) and the output delay function are also adjusted using the buttons.
Remote Configuration
The remote function allows the sensor to be configured remotely or the buttons to be disabled for security. Connect the sensor's gray wire to ground (0 V DC) with a remote programming switch connected between them. Trigger the remote lead according to the setup procedure diagrams. The duration of individual programming pulses equals value T, where: 0.04 seconds ≤ "T" ≤ 0.8 seconds.
Background Suppression Setup
The sensor samples the distance to the background; the sensor sets the cutoff point at approximately 95% of the distance to the background. In run mode, objects between the minimum range and the taught cutoff are detected; anything beyond the cutoff (e.g., other objects or background surfaces) is ignored. The minimum range varies with cutoff distance and reflectivity (refer to "QS30AF Performance Curves" on page 7).
Diagram: Background suppression setup showing sensing distance, minimum range, and cutoff.
Object Detection Setup
The sensor samples the distance to the target object; the sensor sets the cutoff point at approximately 105% of the distance to the target. In run mode, objects between the minimum range and the cutoff are detected; anything beyond the cutoff (e.g., other objects or background surfaces) is ignored. The minimum range varies with cutoff distance and reflectivity (refer to "QS30AF Performance Curves" on page 7).
Diagram: Object detection setup showing sensing distance, minimum range, and cutoff.
Manual Adjustment
Press the (+ or -) buttons to adjust the cutoff by approximately 2%. Use the Background button to further suppress the background. Use the Object button to increase object detection. The display will momentarily flash to confirm the cutoff movement. If the cutoff is at an extreme, the far (7th and 8th) or near (1st and 2nd) bar graph segments will flash simultaneously to indicate that the cutoff has not been adjusted.
- Segments 7 and 8 flashing simultaneously: Object indiscernible; sensor defaults to maximum cutoff.
- Segments 1 and 2 flashing simultaneously: Background is closer than minimum cutoff; sensor defaults to minimum cutoff.
Dynamic Configuration
The sensor samples distances to both the target object and the background surface; the sensor sets the cutoff point midway between the object and the background. In run mode, objects between the minimum range and the cutoff are detected; anything beyond the cutoff (e.g., other objects or background surfaces) is ignored. The minimum range varies with cutoff distance and reflectivity (refer to "QS30AF Performance Curves" on page 7).

Bar Graph Indicator Functions
Run Mode: The illuminated bar graph segment represents the relative distance from the cutoff point. All segments off: No object detected within the visible range.
Configuration Mode:
- Segments 7 and 8 flashing alternately: Background suppression configuration active.
- Segments 5 and 6 flashing alternately: Object detection configuration active.
- Segments 1 and 8 flashing alternately: Dynamic configuration active.
Feedback Mode Configuration
If the cutoff is accepted, the sensor immediately returns to run mode. If the programmed cutoff is outside the sensor's range (less than 50 mm or greater than 300 mm), the following is indicated for 2 seconds:
- Note: The sensor defaults to the maximum or minimum cutoff, then returns to run mode.
- Segments 7 and 8 flashing simultaneously: Object indiscernible; or no object, or a highly reflective object (refer to "Installation Notes" on page 5). Sensor defaults to maximum cutoff.
- Segments 1 and 2 flashing simultaneously: Object is closer than the minimum cutoff limit. Sensor defaults to minimum cutoff.
Configuration Mode
Configuration mode (accessible via buttons only) is used to change the sensor's output response to: Normally closed or normally open operation. 30-millisecond pulse extender (output delay), if needed.
Configuration Mode Indicators: State LEDs, active only during configuration mode, indicate the output response configuration when the sensor is in run mode. Four combinations are possible:
- Normally open, no delay
- Normally closed, no delay
- Normally open, 30 ms delay
- Normally closed, 30 ms delay
To access configuration mode and change output response configuration:
- Simultaneously press and hold BOTH buttons until the green LED turns off.
- Press EITHER button to cycle through the four possible combinations.
- The sensor returns to run mode after the buttons are inactive for 4 seconds.
Note: Outputs are active during configuration mode.
Button Disable
In addition to its configuration function, the remote lead can be used to disable the buttons for security. Button disabling prevents accidental or unauthorized adjustment of the sensor's configuration. Connect the sensor's gray wire as described in the wiring section, and press four times to activate or disable the buttons.
Wiring
Quick disconnect wiring diagrams are functionally identical.

Installation Notes
Some objects (those with a stepped surface facing the sensor, a limit line, or rounded objects) pose specific challenges for sensing distances. For these applications, refer to "Figure: Sensor Orientations for Typical Objects" on page 6 for suggested mounting orientation.
Highly Reflective Backgrounds: Use caution when sensing background surfaces that are mirror-like and produce specular reflections. A false sensor response may occur if any background reflects the sensor's light more intensely to the detector's near end than to its far end, causing a false trigger condition. This problem is resolved by using a diffuse (matte) background. Other solutions include angling the sensor or background (in any plane) so the background does not reflect into the sensor (refer to "Figure: Reflective Background - Problem" on page 6 and "Figure: Reflective Background - Solution" on page 6).
For these applications, the object detection setup procedure is recommended.
