Smith & Nephew QUANTUM 2 COBLATION System
State-of-the-art performance for fast, efficient procedures
COBLATION™ Plasma Technology
The QUANTUM™ 2 Controller System is designed for use with COBLATION™ Wands, offering advanced plasma technology for surgical procedures.
How COBLATION™ Technology Works
The term COBLATION™ signifies "controlled ablation." To date, over 6 million procedures have been successfully performed using COBLATION™ technology to ablate and coagulate tissue. COBLATION™ involves the creation and application of a high-energy field known as "glow discharge plasma." This plasma ablates tissue through a chemical process where highly energized particles break down tissue molecules. COBLATION™ technology offers two key advantages:
- COBLATION™ operates at lower temperatures compared to other RF-based technologies.
- The 100µm – 200µm plasma field enables precise removal of soft tissue with minimal damage to untargeted tissue.

QUANTUM™ 2 Operating Modes
Smith & Nephew COBLATION™ products are engineered to operate in ablation and coagulation modes, producing distinct tissue effects.
Visual Description: Images display the QUANTUM™ 2 Controller unit, showing its interface with settings for COAG and ABLATE modes, and temperature display.
Ablation Mode
As the Controller settings increase from 1 to 9 in ablation mode, the Wands transition from a thermal effect to an ablative effect through the creation and intensity of plasma. Higher Controller settings result in a larger plasma field and a corresponding decrease in power.
Visual Description: A graph titled "SUPER TURBOVAC™ 90 power curve" illustrates the relationship between Set Points (sp1 to sp9, corresponding to voltage settings from 100V to 300V) and Tissue Temperature (°C) versus Power (W). The graph shows a "Thermal" phase where power increases and temperature rises, followed by a "COBLATION" phase where power decreases and temperature stabilizes or decreases, indicating the transition to plasma-based ablation.
Visual Description: A waveform graph compares the "Smith & Nephew Unique Waveform" (orange) with a "Standard Sine Waveform" (grey). The Smith & Nephew waveform is depicted with a sharp leading edge, described as requiring less time to start plasma and allowing more time per half cycle for ablation.
Coagulation Mode
All COBLATION™ Wands can operate in coag mode for hemostasis. At lower settings, with minimal plasma formation and insulation, current flows through the tissue. This coagulates blood vessels, effectively stopping bleeding during surgical procedures.
AMBIENT™ Technology
Smith & Nephew offers the only arthroscopic system providing real-time temperature monitoring of intra-articular fluid. The fluid temperature is continuously displayed on the Controller's LCD screen. If the temperature within the joint space exceeds the user-selected set point, the Controller emits visual and audible alarms, providing direct surgeon feedback.
Controller Output
Smith & Nephew Controllers utilize a unique radiofrequency (RF) output, enabling precise power delivery for plasma creation. Energy delivery is optimized for fast and effective plasma formation while minimizing thermal energy dissipation in the joint.
Scope Safety Feature
The QUANTUM™ 2 Controller incorporates proprietary circuits that continuously monitor energy levels. It automatically suspends output if there is a spike in current, such as when Wands are placed in close proximity to or in contact with metal.
Efficient Ablation, Intelligent Features
The QUANTUM™ 2 Controller is described as the most dynamic COBLATION™ generator platform created by Smith & Nephew. When paired with COBLATION™ Wands, it delivers state-of-the-art performance for fast, efficient procedures.
Adjustable Coagulation
Enhanced coagulation mode improves visualization when dealing with tough bleeders.
