Tannoy Turnberry GR Limited Edition: Heritage, Tradition, and Timeless Styling
An exclusive, perfected, and hand-finished loudspeaker crafted in Scotland to the highest standards.
Introducing the Turnberry Gold Reference Limited Edition
The Turnberry GR Limited Edition represents a substantial upgrade over the standard Turnberry GR. This document highlights the key differences and provides essential information for owners. While many installation and positioning instructions remain the same as the Turnberry GR (refer to the included Owner's Manual for general setup guidance), this leaflet details the unique specifications of the LE model.
Strictly limited to 150 pairs worldwide, the Turnberry GR Limited Edition maintains the classic cabinet and character of the Turnberry GR but incorporates Tannoy's flagship 250 mm (10") Alnico Gold Reference Dual Concentric™ driver. It also features a custom-designed crossover and luxurious LE grille and trim detailing.
For the first time, the Prestige GR Dual with Alnico magnets brings Tannoy's signature PepperPot™ Waveguide™ and bespoke cone material to the Turnberry GR. Combined with a larger 50 mm (2.00") aluminium-magnesium alloy dome HF unit, this driver delivers exceptional smoothness, extension, high power handling, and superior musical communication.
The LE model utilizes a completely bespoke crossover, upgraded with custom-specification ICW ClarityCap™ MR capacitors, low-loss laminated core inductors, and high-precision resistors. This results in a rich, articulate sound with remarkable sound staging and the cohesive musicality of a true point source transducer.
The high-frequency power controls, mounted on a Limited Edition engraved machined aluminium panel, allow users to tailor the listening experience without introducing distortion. Refer to the Owner's Manual (page 32) for detailed information on this control panel.
The Turnberry GR LE cabinet is structurally identical to the standard model, featuring comprehensive bracing, heavy damping, and the same fine timber and artisan craftsmanship. Its distributed port bass loading ensures deep low-frequency response and a dynamic scale that belies its compact dimensions. With superior peak power handling of 500 watts and a high 93 dB efficiency, the Limited Edition Turnberry GR is a powerhouse of musical expression.
Aesthetically Pleasing and Musically Engaging
Distinctive engraved, individually machined metal trims authenticate this enhanced version of the Turnberry GR. The rear baffle details the special Alnico magnet motor system used in the Dual Concentric driver.
The hand-crafted cabinet features a timeless classic design, finished in oiled real wood veneers. A tin of wax-oil is supplied to help maintain the wood's pristine lustre. Utilizing a bespoke weave grille cloth, typically reserved for the Kensington GR, the Turnberry GR LE is as visually appealing as it is musically engaging.
The prestigious Turnberry Gold Reference LE has been strictly limited to a production run of 150 pairs worldwide. Each pair is manufactured, hand-finished, pair-matched, and tested in Scotland. A numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
The Dual Concentric™ Drive Unit
The Tannoy Dual Concentric principle uniquely radiates low and high frequencies from the same axis. The high-frequency unit is positioned behind and concentrically with the low-frequency unit, with high-frequency sound emerging from the center of the low-frequency unit through a designed exponential horn. This integration at source provides the Dual Concentric driver with its unique sound reproduction qualities.
Key benefits include:
- The high-frequency unit does not obstruct the low-frequency unit, unlike other coaxial systems.
- Symmetrical polar dispersion in both horizontal and vertical planes.
- A virtual point source is created by aligning the virtual acoustic sources of the high and low frequency units through careful crossover network design. This makes the total sound appear to emanate from a single point source slightly behind the drive unit, enabling accurate stereo imaging from high-quality stereo sources.
The Low Frequency Section
The low-frequency section features exceptional power handling and dynamic range. The cone piston is made from specially treated paper pulp to absorb internal resonance modes. The twin-roll fabric surround is damped and shaped for optimal compliance and linearity at large excursions.
The cone piston is driven by a high-power motor system with a four-layer coil in a precision magnetic air gap. The coil is wound with a special high-temperature adhesive system for reliable operation at high peak power inputs. The cone shape is optimized for audio frequency dispersion, and the cone flare continues the high-frequency horn profile for a smooth transition at the crossover point.
Low-frequency alignment is achieved through the front-firing Tannoy Distributed Port System (DPS).
High Frequency Section
The high-frequency driver is a wide dynamic range compression unit offering superb transient performance and a smooth, uncoloured response. It delivers acoustic power through a multiple phase-compensating device to the throat of a precision-machined solid steel acoustic horn, which matches the compression unit's radiation to the listening environment.
A magnesium alloy diaphragm, formed through a specialized five-stage process, provides a high stiffness-to-mass ratio and long-term durability. A low-mass precision aluminum coil drives the diaphragm, with fine multi-stranded copper lead-out wires for reliability. The diaphragm is suspended by a newly designed ventilated Mylar™ surround, offering superior energy termination for low coloration and a smooth frequency response. A rear-damped acoustic cavity controls the compression driver response and ensures correct acoustic impedance matching to the horn throat.
The compression horn driver's response extends two full octaves below the crossover frequency to prevent colorations from operation near the fundamental resonance region.
The Magnetic Circuit
An Alcomax 3™ high-energy magnet provides flux generation for both high and low-frequency motors. Precision air gaps contain the magnetic flux, with a unique shunt member in the high-frequency air gap apportioning flux between the units for optimal acoustic balance. Low-carbon steel pole pieces ensure unsaturated operation, linear flux fields, and high heat sinking capability, allowing high power inputs with minimal impedance change due to temperature.
A robust, precision pressure die-cast chassis houses the magnet assembly and accurately positions the moving parts, ensuring long-term reliability without interfering with acoustic radiation.
Alcomax 3™ Magnet
Alcomax 3 is a high-energy Alnico magnet grade, an iron/nickel alloy doped with cobalt, aluminum, and rare metals. It possesses high remanent magnetism and energy product, meaning it magnetizes to a high level and retains it. Alcomax 3 is also electrically conductive, forming a shorted turn around the voice coils to nullify non-linear eddy current effects, contributing to the Dual Concentric drive unit's exceptionally clean transient response and increased sensitivity.
Crossover Network
The crossover network design meticulously analyzes the acoustic, mechanical, and electrical interactions of the high and low-frequency sections, making it an integral part of the system's design. It provides complex amplitude and phase equalization for each section, fully integrating the response at the crossover point.
Components are high-precision, low-loss, and thermally stable, including ClarityCap™ MR series non-microphonic polypropylene capacitors, high-precision resistors, and very low-loss laminated iron core inductors. Wiring utilizes Neotech™ PCOCC-A (99.9999% purity) for its large crystal structure and stable atomic arrangement.
All crossover components are hard-wired to eliminate unwanted metal-to-metal contact and ensure freedom from vibration. Component layout minimizes inter-component coupling and avoids the driver's magnetic field. High-current switch blocks with gold-plated screw terminals allow user adjustment of high-frequency energy to suit different listening environments.
The complementary design of the crossover and drive units ensures the loudspeaker system functions as a minimum phase system across the audio band. This aligns the acoustic sources of the high and low-frequency sections in time and space, guaranteeing accurate reproduction of stereo images.
