Recommended Tools
While the computer is largely tool-less, some procedures require specific tools:
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- #1 and #2 Phillips-head screwdrivers
- An 8-inch, #2 Phillips-head screwdriver
Precautionary Measures
Follow these safety guidelines to protect your computer and ensure personal safety:
CAUTION: Before starting any procedure, follow the safety instructions in the System Information Guide.
CAUTION: Do not attempt self-service beyond instructions provided by Dell in online documentation or other official materials.
NOTICE: To prevent system board damage, wait 5 seconds after powering off and unplugging the computer before removing components or disconnecting devices.
- Shut down the computer via the Start menu.
- Ensure the computer and attached devices are turned off.
- Disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines.
- Unplug the computer and all attached devices from electrical outlets, then press the power button to ground the system board.
Additional safety guidelines:
- When disconnecting cables, pull on the connector or strain-relief loop, not the cable itself. For cables with locking tabs, press the tabs before disconnecting. Keep connectors aligned to avoid bending pins. Ensure correct orientation and alignment before connecting cables.
- Handle components and cards carefully. Avoid touching components or contacts. Hold cards by their edges or metal brackets. Hold components like microprocessors by their edges, not pins.
Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Static electricity can damage sensitive internal components. To prevent ESD:
- Discharge static electricity from your body by touching an unpainted metal surface on the computer chassis before touching any electronic components. Periodically touch an unpainted metal surface while working inside the computer.
- When unpacking static-sensitive components, keep them in their antistatic packaging until ready for installation. Discharge static electricity before unwrapping.
- Transport sensitive components in antistatic containers or packaging.
- Work in a static-safe area, using antistatic floor pads and workbench pads if available.
