New Gameplay
New Play Call (RPOs)
Introducing RPOs (Run/Pass Options), the offensive scheme taking the NFL by storm. Madden NFL 20 features three RPOs: Alerts, Peeks, and Reads. The playbook includes hundreds of RPOs to practice and master.
Signature Abilities (X-Factors & Superstar Abilities)
Signature Abilities highlight an athlete's unique skills. There are two types: Zone and Superstar. Zone abilities unlock when a player enters the "Zone" by completing an in-game objective. Superstar abilities are always active, and players can have multiple attached.
Additional Gameplay Changes
Streamlined pre-play, post-play, and No-Huddle create a faster experience. Pass rushes are more balanced and intense, with limited time in the pocket for QBs. Defensive backs can perform athletic jumping interceptions, while linebackers and defensive linemen have improved animations. Multiple defenders can join tackle animations, and players get up faster after being tackled. Transitions are polished for responsiveness and user-friendliness.

Starting Your Franchise
Choose Online (Cloud) or Offline, select and customize your team. Start in the preseason to familiarize yourself with your team and abilities. You can switch to Regular from the Starting Point.
Play the Moment & Other Ways to Play
Choose your mode of play before loading into a game. Play the Moment lets you jump into crucial moments for an efficient victory. You can also play Offense Only or Defense Only. Adjust game speed in Supersim using Fast Mode or Slow Mode.
Setting Your Season Goal
In the regular season, set your Season Goal. As Coach, set win expectations; missing the goal can lead to firing. As a Player, choose stats based on your position.
Upgrade Player Archetypes
As Coach or Owner, control player paths. As a Player, work towards the Hall of Fame. Earn Skill Points from XP gained through Coach and Milestone goals, or by performing well in games, to upgrade player archetypes and boost ratings.
Hub
The Team Panel provides access to your roster. View player attributes, goals, stats, and apply Skill Points. Interact with league members in Cloud Franchise to check game and online status. Commissioners can toggle Auto Pilot, clear cap penalties, or remove users.
Improving Your Team
Use the "Improve Your Team" option to find free agents and trade block players. Compare your players to available ones; a higher grade indicates better performance at a position.
Scouting
In Week 3, a "Things To Do" item teaches scouting. Spend Scouting Points to learn player abilities and decide on draft picks. Scouting Points unlock top attributes, with the third unlock revealing true draft value. Find "Diamonds" and "Overvalued" players by spending points before the NFL Draft.
Weekly Training & Gameplan
Develop great teams on the practice field. Spend time training each week to improve your team and prepare for opponents.
Creating Your Gameplan
Set offensive and defensive gameplans based on opponent tendencies. In-game drills accompany each gameplan; better performance in drills yields higher medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) and more XP. Gameplans provide offensive and defensive boosts to plays.
Focus Training
Focus Training boosts players you personally train. Coaches recommend focusing rookies, but any player can be chosen. Boost players to develop them into powerhouses.
Free Practice
Experiment with plays in Free Practice to see how your team plays and stay ahead in your league.
Morale Rating
Player performance determines Morale. A confident team performs better. Maximize on-field opportunities to build your Morale rating.
Multiple Advance Points
Jump ahead in your season or play week-to-week using Multiple Advance Points to manage the offseason, free agency, and the NFL Draft.
Commissioner Tools
Control your league with Commissioner Tools:
- Full Player Editing: Edit player appearance, contract info, ratings, traits, and more. Edits are logged for league monitoring.
- Designate Auto-Pilot Length: Set yourself or other users to auto-pilot for multiple weeks when unavailable. Available for league members and Commissioners.
- Multiple Commissioners: Designate a second Commissioner to ensure league progression when the original is unavailable.
Owner Mode
Select a backstory for your Owner character, which impacts gameplay. Backstories include:
- Former Player: Advantage with roster happiness, starts with $3 million.
- Lifelong Fan: Advantage with fans, starts with $3 million.
- Financial Mogul: Financial advantage, starts with $7 million, but low Legacy score and player happiness.
Make key decisions influencing team revenue and wins. Use advisors for team updates and assistance. Set prices for tickets, concessions, and merchandise. Check Team Value (Fan Happiness, Staff, Stadium) and hire staff to keep players performing well. Relocate if a change of scenery or new stadium will boost morale.
Offseason
Re-Signing Players
Negotiate with pending free agents during the regular season or in the offseason. Ensure offers suit both parties; if declined, the player tests the open market.
Free Agency Bidding
Select from free agents to improve your roster, provided you have salary cap space. Each player has a market value, and other NFL teams may show interest.
Contract Offers
Advance the week to see updates on contract offers. Check "My Negotiations" to view players you are attempting to sign. You can increase, pull, or keep offers as is. Free agency lasts four weeks.
Draft
After free agency, participate in the NFL Draft. View the draft order and available actions. Offer trades to move up, view the draft board, or advance the draft. Sports personalities will react to selections. Speed up the process by advancing to the next user pick.
Signing Rookies
Rookie contracts are automatically handled, replicating NFL practices.
Playing as a Coach
Spending XP
As a Coach, spend XP to decrease player retirement odds, ease re-signings, boost position XP, or increase Scouting Points.
Playing as a Player
Creating a Player
Play as an active NFL player or create your own character.
Backstory
Choose from Early Draft Pick (highest ratings, higher expectations), Late Round Pick, or Undrafted.
Upgrading Your Player
Accumulate XP through on-field performance. Earn Skill Points to apply to position archetypes, boosting ratings until your player gains an OVR point.
Retirement
Retire your Player at any time to select a new Player, Coach, or Owner at the same point in the season or year.
Legacy Score
Awards (MVP, Super Bowl championships) contribute to your Legacy Score, determining your historical ranking. A high Legacy Score is needed for Hall of Fame induction.
