Breville BTM800XL One-Touch Tea Maker

Instruction Booklet

Congratulations

On the purchase of your new Breville Tea Maker

Today, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world after water. Whether your taste preference is for a rich full bodied Darjeeling tea, a delicate first picked Japanese Green tea or one of the hundreds of herbal teas now available, all tea drinkers know the special moment of escape that can be found while drinking that perfect cup.

Yet brewing tea is both an art and a science. Tea varieties are grown and produced in different environments and require specific water temperatures and controlled brew times to allow their unique flavor and aroma to develop during brewing. Boiled water is not considered good for making many tea types as the boiling process removes oxygen, making the water stale. To bring out the optimal quality and taste of more delicate tea leaves such as green, oolong and white tea, a lower temperature will produce a better flavored cup of tea while boiling water may scald the tea leaves and result in a bitter, astringent brew. Similarly, brewing the tea for too long may result in a bitter, unpleasant brew, while brewing for too short a period may leave the tea weak and tasteless.

The Breville One-Touch Tea Maker is fully programmable for all types of tea, water temperatures and brew times, eliminating the guesswork so you can enjoy a perfect cup of tea, every time.

Before First Use

Tea Types

There are four main types of teas from the tea plant camellia sinensis. The picking and processing methods determine the type of tea finally produced.

  1. Black Tea: The most common type worldwide. Made by fermenting harvested leaves for a couple of hours before heating or drying. Oxidation darkens leaves and increases caffeine. Strongest color and flavor.
  2. White Tea: Rarest and most exclusive. Made from whitish buds steamed then dried naturally. Low in caffeine, slightly sweet flavor.
  3. Green Tea: Approximately ten percent of the world's tea. Leaves are picked, rolled, and dried before turning brown. Distinctive aroma, slightly astringent taste.
  4. Oolong Tea: Semi-fermented. Leaves processed immediately after picking. Short oxidation period turns leaves from green to red/brown. Floral, fruity quality. Not recommended with milk, sugar, or lemon.
  5. Herbal Infusions or Tisanes: Not from the tea plant, but from flowers, leaves, roots, or seeds (e.g., chamomile, peppermint, fennel, rose hip, lemon verbena). Do not become bitter with extended brews. Can be brewed with boiling water up to 3 times without jeopardizing taste.
  6. Blends: Combinations of different tea types for flavor consistency (e.g., English Breakfast, Earl Grey).

Tip: Brewed tea leaves make ideal garden fertilizer.

Preparing the Tea Maker for Use

It is recommended to run a boiling cycle and discard the water to remove dust or residues.

  1. Remove and discard all packaging, labels, and tape.
  2. Remove the Jug Lid and Tea Basket. Wash the Jug Lid, Tea Basket, Basket Lid, and Tea Scoop in warm, soapy water with a soft sponge; rinse and dry thoroughly.
  3. Place the Power Base on a flat, dry surface.
  4. Without the Tea Basket, fill the Glass Jug to the 'WATER MAX' mark (1500mL) and place it on the Power Base. Secure the Jug Lid.
  5. Unwind the power cord and plug into a grounded wall outlet.
  6. The LCD screen will illuminate with default settings (e.g., 175°F, 3:00).
  7. Press the left ARROW UP button until the LCD displays 212°F. The 'Custom' LED will illuminate.
  8. Press the HOT WATER|Cancel button to start the cycle. The button surround will light up, and the LCD will show 'ON', then real-time heating progress.
  9. Once 212°F is reached, a tea alert will sound three times, and the HOT WATER|Cancel button surround will turn off.
  10. Discard the water. The Tea Maker is now ready for use.

Warning: NEVER IMMERSE THE BASE OF THE GLASS JUG, THE POWER BASE, POWER CORD OR POWER PLUG IN WATER OR ALLOW MOISTURE TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THESE PARTS.

Warning: NEVER FILL THE GLASS JUG WITH CHILLED WATER. ALLOW THE TEA MAKER TO COOL BEFORE REFILLING.

Warning: FILLING PAST THE 'MAX' LINE MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS BURNS OR INJURIES AS A RESULT OF OVERFLOWING HOT OR BOILING WATER. FILLING BELOW THE 'MIN' LINE WILL RESULT IN THE TEA MAKER SWITCHING OFF BEFORE THE WATER HAS BOILED OR REACHED THE SELECTED TEMPERATURE.

Operating Your Breville Tea Maker

Use as a Tea Maker for Brewing Tea

  1. Remove the Glass Jug from the Power Base and remove the Jug Lid. Fill the Glass Jug with the desired amount of water, ensuring not to exceed the 'TEA MAX' mark (1200mL).
  2. Place the Basket on a flat, dry surface. Remove the Basket Lid by lifting its sides.
  3. Use the provided Tea Scoop to fill the Basket with tea leaves. A general guideline is 1 scoop per cup / 8oz of water, but refer to tea packaging or personal preference.
  4. Replace the Basket Lid on the Basket, ensuring it snaps securely.
  5. Slide the assembled Basket onto the magnetic post inside the Glass Jug. The Basket will attach magnetically. Replace the Jug Lid.

Selecting the Tea Type

The tea type determines the brew temperature. The Tea Maker has 5 preset tea types (Green, Black, White, Herbal, Oolong) for optimal brewing. A customizable setting is also available.

  1. Press the TEA TYPE button repeatedly until the desired tea type ('Green', 'Black', 'White', 'Herbal', or 'Oolong') illuminates.
  2. The LCD screen will display the preset brew temperature for optimal brewing of the selected tea type (left figure on the LCD).

Selecting the Tea Strength

Tea strength determines brew time. The Tea Maker offers 3 preset strengths (Strong, Medium, Mild) and a customizable brew time setting.

  1. Press the TEA STRENGTH button until the desired strength ('Strong', 'Medium', or 'Mild') illuminates.
  2. The LCD screen will display the preset brew time recommended for the selected strength and tea type (right figure on the LCD).

Note: 'BREW TIME' can be adjusted during heating, but 'BREW TEMP' cannot be changed once heating begins. To adjust brew time, use the right ARROW UP/DOWN buttons (30-second increments, up to 10 minutes). To change brew temperature, cancel the cycle (TEA|Cancel) and re-select.

Note: If the Glass Jug is removed during water heating, the cycle cancels automatically. Press TEA|Cancel to restart.

Note: If the Glass Jug is removed during brewing, the LCD counts down. The basket returns to the top when the brew time elapses and the jug is replaced.

Note: The 'Basket Cycle' feature can significantly increase infusion rate and affect strength. Consider reducing initial strength/brew time.

  2. Once the selected brew temperature is reached, the assembled Basket automatically lowers into the heated water.
  3. When the Basket reaches the bottom, the LCD indicates brewing progress, counting down.
  4. At the end of the cycle, the Basket automatically rises to prevent over-brewing. A tea alert sounds three times. The LCD displays 'Time Since Brew' (up to 60 minutes) to monitor freshness.

Selecting the 'Keep Warm' Feature

This feature keeps brewed tea or heated water warm for up to 60 minutes. The 'Keep Warm' temperature ranges from 160-175°F, depending on the original brew temperature.

To activate: Press the KEEP WARM button before, during, or after the cycle. The button surround illuminates.

Note: 'Keep Warm' only functions during the 'Time Since Brew' period (up to 60 minutes) and requires the Glass Jug to be on the Power Base.

Selecting the 'Basket Cycle' Feature

This feature continuously lifts and lowers the Basket during brewing for maximum infusion.

To activate: Press the BASKET button once. The button surround illuminates, and 'BASKET CYCLE' appears on the LCD.

During the cycle: The BASKET button surround flashes as the basket moves.

To cancel: Press the BASKET button once. The surround turns off, 'BASKET CYCLE' disappears, and the basket returns to the bottom for the remainder of the brew time.

Use as a Variable Temperature Kettle

The Tea Maker can also boil or heat water to a customizable temperature.

Note: Clean the Glass Jug thoroughly and remove the Tea Basket before using as a kettle.

  1. Fill the Glass Jug with water to the desired level, not exceeding 'WATER MAX' (1500mL).
  2. To boil water (212°F): Press the left ARROW UP button until 212°F is displayed. The 'Custom' LED illuminates.

Care & Cleaning

Ensure the Tea Maker is OFF. Unplug and allow to cool completely before cleaning.

Note: Only the Jug Lid, Tea Basket, Tea Basket Lid, and Tea Scoop are dishwasher safe.

Warning: NEVER IMMERSE THE BASE OF THE GLASS JUG, POWER BASE, POWER CORD OR POWER PLUG IN WATER OR ALLOW MOISTURE TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THESE PARTS.

Cleaning the Jug Lid and Integrated Scale Filter

  1. Wash the Jug Lid in warm soapy water with a soft sponge; rinse and dry. Clean the integrated scale filter under running hot water or with a brush.
  2. The Jug Lid is also dishwasher safe. Position vertically with the filter facing up for proper drainage.
  3. Dry all surfaces thoroughly before use.

Cleaning the Glass Jug

  1. Empty the Glass Jug after each use. Do not leave brewed tea overnight.
  2. Wipe the interior with a soft damp sponge or rinse with warm water. Avoid soapy water if using only as a tea maker, as tea deposits enhance flavor.
  3. Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth.

Warning: NEVER IMMERSE OR WASH EXTERIOR OF GLASS JUG UNDER RUNNING WATER.

Note: Do not use chemicals, steel wool, or abrasive cleaners, as they may scratch the surface.

  1. To remove tannin buildup: Fill the Glass Jug to the 'WATER MAX' mark (1500mL) and either:
    • Add juice of one lemon and boil. Let soak overnight, discard solution, rinse, boil clean water, discard. Repeat if necessary.
    • Add 2 tbsp baking soda and boil. Let soak overnight, discard solution, rinse, boil clean water, discard. Repeat if necessary.
    • Add 6 tbsp white vinegar and boil. Let soak overnight, discard solution, rinse, boil clean water, discard. Repeat if necessary.
  2. Dry thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth before use.

Note: Scale build-up can affect performance. Use a commercial de-scaling agent regularly and follow its instructions.

Cleaning the Tea Basket Lid, Tea Basket and Tea Scoop

  1. Wash in warm soapy water with a soft sponge; rinse and dry. Mild liquid cleanser or spray solution may be used. Apply cleanser to sponge, not surfaces.
  2. These accessories are also dishwasher safe.
  3. Dry all surfaces thoroughly before use.

Cleaning the Power Base

  1. Wipe with a soft damp sponge.
  2. Dry thoroughly before plugging into a wall outlet.

Storage

  1. Ensure the Tea Maker is OFF, clean, and dry before storing.
  2. Ensure the assembled Tea Basket is securely attached to the magnetic post.
  3. Ensure the Jug Lid is securely in place.
  4. Wrap the power cord in the storage space under the Power Base.
  5. Stand the Tea Maker upright on the Power Base. Do not store items on top.

Troubleshooting

Possible Problem: Tea Maker will not switch 'ON'

Easy Solution: Check power plug is secure; use an independent outlet; reset circuit breaker if necessary. For severe overheating, a thermal cut-out will shut down the unit; call Breville Customer Service (1-866-BREVILLE).

Possible Problem: The Tea Maker will not work

Easy Solution: Check Glass Jug is securely positioned on the Power Base.

Possible Problem: The LCD light has gone out

Easy Solution: The Tea Maker enters standby mode after 3 minutes of inactivity (LCD screen turns off). To reactivate: Remove and replace the Glass Jug, or press any button on the Power Base (except HOT WATER|Cancel or TEA|Cancel). The LCD will re-illuminate.

Possible Problem: I cannot select certain functions

Easy Solution: Certain functions cannot be selected or changed during heating or brewing cycles. The LCD may change temporarily, or a sound alert may be heard, but no changes will be made to the cycle.

Possible Problem: The LCD screen displays 'RESET'

Easy Solution: This indicates a resettable electronic issue. Unplug the appliance, wait 5 seconds, then plug back in. If the message persists, contact Breville Customer Service (1-866-BREVILLE).

Possible Problem: The LCD screen displays 'ERROR'

Easy Solution: This indicates a non-resettable issue. Contact Breville Customer Service (1-866-BREVILLE).

Possible Problem: I would like to have the Tea Maker's default settings back

Easy Solution: Even when unplugged, settings are remembered. To restore default settings for each function, simultaneously press and hold AUTO START and KEEP WARM buttons for 2 seconds.

Possible Problem: There is a rattling noise inside the Glass Jug

Easy Solution: This is normal. The noise comes from the magnet in the jug post and may be heard when the Tea Basket is not attached.

Possible Problem: The 'BASKET CYCLE' feature / BASKET button does not work

Easy Solution: The BASKET button is only selectable when brewing tea, not when using it as a variable temperature kettle. When brewing tea, it has 3 uses:

  1. To assist infusion: Continuously lifts and lowers the basket during brewing for maximum infusion. Press BASKET button once before or during the cycle (see Page 18).
  2. For extra infusion: Lowers the basket after brewing is complete for stronger tea. Press and hold BASKET for 2 seconds after the cycle. Press and hold again for 2 seconds to raise the basket (see Page 23).
  3. For brew times over 10 minutes: Basket lowers when temperature is reached and brewing begins. It does NOT automatically lift. You must manually lift it when the brew time has elapsed (see Page 21 for customizing brew time).

Possible Problem: After boiling water, bubbles appear around the temperature sensor

Easy Solution: This is normal for the functionality of the Tea Maker.

Possible Problem: My tea tastes too weak or too strong

Easy Solution: Tea taste is personal. Experiment with tea amount or brew time. For stronger tea, increase amount/time (see Pages 16 and 21). For weaker tea, decrease amount/time (see Pages 16 and 21).
