2. Turning on the Machine

Wash accessories with lukewarm water and detergent. Proceed as follows:

  1. Remove the water tank (A3) (fig 1) and fill it with fresh, clean water. Do not fill above the MAX line (fig. 2).
  2. Replace the tank, pressing gently until the valves at the bottom open (fig. 3).

Warning: Never turn on the machine if the water tank is empty or has been removed.

Note: It is recommended to adjust the water hardness as soon as possible by following the procedure described in chapter "9. Menu Settings".

3. First Use of the Machine

The first time the machine is used, the internal circuits must be rinsed:

  1. Plug the machine into the socket. Press the main power switch (A6) (fig. 4).
  2. The machine performs a self-diagnosis, indicated by the three buttons blinking in sequence (fig. 5).
  3. The lights [coffee cup] and [steam cup] blink to indicate the machine is heating up (fig. 6). When the lights are steady, the machine is ready to rinse the circuit.
  4. Attach the filter holder to the machine: align the handle with "INSERT" and turn to the right until it is in line with the "CLOSE" position (fig. 7).
  5. Place a container of at least 0.5 liters under the coffee brewer (A5) and the steam wand (A11) (fig. 8).
  6. Press the [coffee cup] button. Repeat this action 5 times (fig. 9).
  7. Turn the steam release button (A12) to the [steam symbol] position (fig. 10) to release hot water. The machine will automatically stop dispensing, and the [coffee cup] and [steam cup] indicator lights will blink. Turn the button back to the [power symbol] position. This allows any water in the pipe to be expelled before steaming. The machine is now ready for use.

Note: It is normal for a small amount of water to collect in the drip tray. This area should be dried regularly with a clean cloth.

Please note: Refer to the rating plate under the appliance to identify your model.

4. Coffee Preparation

4.1 Using Ground Coffee

  1. Insert the 1-cup filter (C2) or 2-cup filter (C3) into the filter holder (C1) (fig. 11).
  2. Fill the filter with ground coffee (fig. 12). Ensure the coffee is finely ground, especially for espresso.
  3. Distribute the ground coffee evenly and tamp it lightly with the tamper (C6) (fig. 13). Ensure the coffee is level after tamping. You may need to add more coffee.
  4. Remove any excess coffee grounds from the rim of the filter holder and attach the filter holder to the machine (fig. 7).
  5. Place the cup(s) under the filter holder spouts.
  6. Ensure the indicator lights for the coffee buttons are on, then press the coffee button (B1) or (B3).
  7. The machine will continue to dispense and stop automatically.
  8. To release the filter holder, turn the handle from right to left.

Notes:

  • For correct operation, always ensure the filter is clean and free of coffee powder from the previous brew before adding coffee.
  • You can interrupt the coffee brewing process at any time by pressing the brew button you used.
  • Once brewing is complete, you can increase the coffee volume in the cup by pressing and holding the brew button again (within 3 seconds). The brewing will stop automatically after a few seconds.
  • To avoid splashing, never remove the filter holder while the machine is brewing. Always wait a few seconds after brewing.

Tamping Coffee:

For a good espresso, it is crucial to tamp the ground coffee. If tamped too hard, the espresso will flow out slowly and be strong. If tamped too lightly, the espresso will flow out too quickly and be weak.

4.2 How to Get Warmer Coffee

  • Preheat cups by rinsing them with a little hot water.
  • Attach the filter holder (C1) with the filter (C2 or C3) inserted into the machine, without adding coffee. Use the cup you will drink from, press the 1-cup button, and let hot water run into the cup to warm it.
  • Increase the coffee temperature in the programming menu (see "9. Menu Settings").
  • During operation, the cup warmer (A4) heats up: place the cups to be used on it.

5. Espresso Preparation with Pods

  1. Insert the pod filter (C4) into the filter holder (C1) (fig. 14).
  2. Place an espresso pod in the filter, positioning it as centrally as possible (fig. 15). Always follow the instructions on the pod packaging for correct placement.
  3. Attach the filter holder to the machine (fig. 7).
  4. Place the cup under the filter holder spouts.
  5. Ensure the indicator lights for the coffee buttons are on, then press the brew button (B1).
  6. The machine will continue to dispense and stop automatically.
  7. To release the filter holder, turn the handle from right to left.

5.1 Pod Selection

Use pods that comply with the ESE standard. These are marked with this symbol. The ESE standard is a system approved by leading pod manufacturers, allowing for simple and hygienic espresso preparation.

Note:

  • When using pods, it is possible to proceed with a single brew at a time.
  • Refer to section "4.2 How to Get Warmer Coffee".

6. Programming Coffee Volume per Cup

The coffee machine is pre-programmed to dispense standard volumes. If you wish to change these volumes, follow this procedure:

  1. Place one or two cups under the filter holder spouts (C1).
  2. Press the button you wish to program ([coffee cup] or [double coffee cup]) and hold it down.
  3. The machine will start brewing coffee, and the other coffee button will blink to indicate that the machine is in programming mode.
  4. As soon as the desired amount of coffee is in the cup, release the button. Dispensing will stop, and the indicator light will blink to confirm the volume has been saved.
Factory Setting VolumeProgrammable Volume
35 mlfrom 15 to 90 ml
70 mlfrom 30 to 180 ml

7. How to Make Cappuccino

  1. To use tall glasses, remove the drip tray (A9) and place the glasses on the corresponding tray (A10) (fig. 16).
  2. Prepare the espressos as described in the previous sections, using sufficiently large cups.
  3. Fill the milk jug with fresh milk at refrigerator temperature (fig. 17). The milk will expand 2-3 times its original volume.
  4. Press the steam button (B5) (fig. 18). The indicator light will blink. When the light is steady, the machine is ready to dispense steam.
  5. Place the jug under the steam wand (A11): lower the wand and turn the knob to the [steam symbol] position (fig. 19).
  6. To froth the milk, place the steam wand tip on the surface of the milk. This mixes air with the milk and steam.
  7. Keep the steam wand tip on the surface, being careful not to draw in too much air, which would create excessively large bubbles.
  8. Lower the steam wand into the milk to create a vortex.
  9. When the correct temperature (ideal value is 60°C) and desired creaminess are reached, stop the steam dispensing by turning the steam knob to the [power symbol] position.
  10. Pour the frothed milk into the cups with the prepared espresso. The cappuccino is ready. Add sugar if desired, and sprinkle a little chocolate powder over the milk foam.

Notes:

  • If making multiple cappuccinos, prepare all the coffees first, then froth the milk for all cappuccinos at the end.
  • Press any button to exit the steam function.
  • The [coffee cup] and [steam cup] indicator lights blink to indicate that the steam knob should be closed (symbol [power symbol]). If the [coffee cup] and [steam cup] lights blink simultaneously, indicating the temperature is too high for dispensing coffee, refer to the "Cooling Cycle" section.
  • It is not recommended to dispense steam for more than 60 seconds at a time.

7.1 Tips for Optimal Use:

  • Recommended volume for each cappuccino: 100 ml.
  • For a thick and homogeneous foam, use milk at refrigerator temperature (approx. 5°C).
  • When the machine is ready to froth milk, before proceeding, place an empty container under the wand and open the steam knob to purge air from the steam circuit. Close the steam knob and proceed with preparation.

7.2 Steam Wand Cleaning

  1. After each use, remove milk residue from the steam wand with a cloth (fig. 20). For thorough cleaning, it is advisable to use Eco MultiClean: it ensures hygiene by removing milk proteins and fats and can be used to clean the entire machine.
  2. Dispense steam for a few seconds to clean the wand internally (fig. 21).
  3. Wait for the brew unit to cool down: to maintain the brew unit's efficiency over time, use the cleaning needle to keep the hole open (C7) (fig. 22).

7.3 Cooling Cycle

If the two indicator lights [coffee cup] and [steam cup] blink simultaneously after using the steam function, indicating the boiler needs to cool down to reach the correct temperature for making espresso, proceed as follows:

  • Place a container under the cappuccino maker.
  • Open the steam knob to dispense steam and hot water: the indicator light will blink (fig. 23).
  • When the [coffee cup] and [steam cup] lights blink, the boiler has cooled down: close the steam knob (when the boiler has cooled, dispensing stops) (fig. 24). The machine is now ready for use.

8. Prepare Hot Water

  1. Place a container under the steam wand (A11).
  2. Wait for the coffee brewing indicator lights (B1) and (B3) to turn on.
  3. Turn the knob (A12) to the [steam symbol] position. Hot water will dispense from the steam wand.
  4. To stop the flow of hot water, turn the knob to the [power symbol] position.

It is not recommended to dispense water for more than 60 seconds at a time.

This procedure resets the machine to its factory default settings.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Place the steam wand (A11) on the drip tray (A9).
  2. Enter the programming menu.
  3. Turn the steam release knob (A12) to the [steam symbol] position.
  4. Press the [coffee cup] button. The three indicator lights will blink simultaneously to confirm the reset of the original settings.
  5. The [coffee cup] and [steam cup] indicator lights blink to indicate that the steam knob should be closed (symbol [power symbol]).

When the steam knob is closed, the machine is ready for use.

11. Machine Cleaning

The following parts of the coffee machine should be cleaned regularly:

  • Drip tray (A9)
  • Coffee filters (C2), (C3), and (C4)
  • Coffee brewer (A5)
  • Water tank (A3)
  • Steam wand (A11) as shown in chapter "7.2 Steam Wand Cleaning"

Warning:

  • None of the machine's components or accessories are dishwasher safe.
  • Do not use solvents, abrasive cleaners, or alcohol for cleaning the coffee machine.
  • Do not use metal objects to remove limescale or coffee residue, as they can scratch metal or plastic surfaces.
  • After periods longer than one week without use, it is recommended to perform a rinse cycle as shown in section "3. First Use of the Machine" before using the machine.

Danger:

  • Never immerse the machine in water when cleaning: the coffee machine is an electrical appliance.
  • Before cleaning the exterior parts of the appliance, switch off the coffee machine, unplug it from the socket, and let the machine cool down.

11.1 Drip Tray Cleaning

Warning: The drip tray is equipped with a float indicator (red) that shows the water level. Before the indicator protrudes from the drip tray grid (fig. 25), it is necessary to empty and clean the tray, otherwise, water may overflow and damage the machine, the work surface, or the surrounding area.

  1. Remove the drip tray (A9) (fig. 26).
  2. Remove the drip tray grid (A7), empty the water, and clean the tray with a cloth. Then reassemble the drip tray. Remove the tray for cups or glasses (A10), clean with water, dry, and reinsert.
  3. Reinsert the drip tray.

11.2 Coffee Filter Cleaning

Coffee filters are designed to achieve the best possible coffee crema. To keep them effective, filters must always be clean and free of coffee residue.

  • After each use, rinse the filter with plenty of running water (fig. 27), and then press the perforated filter to ensure it is correctly seated (fig. 28).
  • Check that the hole on the back of the filter (see fig. 29) is clear of residue.

If the filter is still dirty or at least once a month, clean the coffee filters as follows:

  1. Remove the perforated filter by pulling the tab (fig. 30).
  2. Rinse the filters with running water (fig. 31).
  3. Ensure the holes are not blocked. Clean with a needle if necessary (fig. 29-31).
  4. Dry with a cloth.
  5. Reinsert the perforated filter into its seat and push it down completely (fig. 28).

Filter for Pods

Rinse with running water. Ensure the holes are not blocked. Clean with a needle if necessary (fig. 29-31).

11.3 Coffee Brewer Cleaning

For every 200 cups of coffee, rinse by dispensing approximately 0.5 L of water from the brewer (press the coffee brewing button without using ground coffee).

11.4 Other Cleaning

  1. Do not use solvents or abrasive materials for cleaning the machine. A damp, soft cloth is sufficient.
  2. The filter holder should be cleaned regularly.

11.5 Water Tank Cleaning

  1. Clean the water tank regularly (approximately once a month) and whenever the water filter (if present) is replaced, using a damp cloth and a little neutral detergent.
  2. Remove the filter (if present) and rinse it under running water.
  3. Reinsert the filter (if present), fill the tank with fresh water, and replace it.
  4. (For models with a water filter) Dispense 100ml of water.

12. Descaling

Perform descaling when the orange indicator light for the descaling button blinks.

Warning:

  • Read the instructions and label on the descaler packaging (C9) before descaling the machine.
  • It is recommended to use only De'Longhi descaler. The use of unsuitable descalers and irregular descaling may cause faults that are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
  • The descaler can damage delicate surfaces. If the product is accidentally spilled, wipe it up immediately.

How to Descale

8. The machine is ready for rinsing with fresh, clean water. Remove the water tank, empty it, rinse it with running water, fill it to the MAX level with fresh water (fig. 34), and replace it in the machine.

9. Ensure the steam knob is in the [steam symbol] position, then press the [coffee cup] button to start the rinse. During descaling, to also rinse the coffee circuit, close the steam knob from time to time to release small amounts of descaler from the coffee brewer.

10. Perform a second rinse from step 7 to 9, also reinserting the filter (if it was previously inserted).

11. When the water tank is empty, the orange light turns off, and descaling is complete. The [coffee cup] and [steam cup] indicator lights blink.

12. Close the steam knob by turning it to the [power symbol] position.

13. Fill the water tank with fresh water.

The machine is now ready for use.

Note:

  • If the descaling cycle is not completed correctly (e.g., due to a power outage), it is recommended to repeat the cycle.
  • For model EC885 EX4 only: If the descaling function is activated accidentally, it can be interrupted by holding the [coffee cup] button for at least 10 seconds.
  • If the descaling cycle is not completed due to a power failure, the machine will still be in descaling mode when power is restored: wait for the descaling cycle to finish, and the machine will then be "ready for use".
