Chapter 2: Installation and Removal Procedures and Notes
Tools Needed
- Wrench sized appropriately for the PT-400's process connection.
- Thread tape or sealant compound for threaded connections.
Physical Installation Notes
The PT-400 should be installed in an area (indoors or outdoors) meeting these conditions:
- Ambient temperature: -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to +185°F)
- Relative humidity: up to 100%
- Altitude: up to 2000 meters (6560 feet)
- IEC-664-1 Conductive Pollution Degree: 1 or 2
- IEC 61010-1 Measurement Category: II
- Environment free from chemicals corrosive to stainless steel (e.g., NH3, SO2, Cl2).
- Ample space for maintenance and inspection.
- Class II power supply.
Mounting Instructions
- Ensure the sensor's fitting matches the tank/vessel/pipe fitting. If mismatched, do not install and contact the factory.
- Avoid over-tightening the sensor, as this can compress the diaphragm and affect pressure response. Tighten only enough to create an adequate seal. For straight threads, tighten until the o-ring compresses, avoiding damage or extrusion.
- Use thread tape or sealant compound on tapered threads, wrapping in the opposite direction of the threads to prevent unraveling. For straight threads, use an o-ring.
- Start screwing the sensor by hand to prevent cross-threading.
Electrical Installation
- Verify the PT-400's pinout table matches your order.
- Ensure your electrical system wiring matches the PT-400's pinout table.
- For instruments with connectors, make the connection. For others, attach wires to the terminal strip.
Removal Instructions
? DANGER: Removing the PT-400 Pressure Transmitter while there is still pressure in the line could result in injury or death.
- Ensure pressure is completely removed from the line or vessel. Follow all procedures for safely isolating any contained media.
- Remove the sensor using an appropriately sized wrench.
- Clean the sensor's fitting and diaphragm of debris (see General Care) and inspect for damage.
- Store the sensor in a dry place at a temperature between -40°C and 82°C (-40°F to 180°F).
Chapter 3: Maintenance
General Care
The PT-400 requires low maintenance. General care includes:
- Keeping the transmitter and surrounding area clean.
- Avoiding applications outside its design parameters (e.g., extreme temperatures, incompatible chemicals).
- Inspecting threads when removing or relocating the transmitter.
- Avoiding touching the diaphragm, as contact can shift output and affect accuracy.
- Cleaning the diaphragm or bore with extreme care, ensuring any tool used does not touch the diaphragm.
Zero Trimming
To perform zero trimming:
- Remove protective screw(s) using a 5/64 allen wrench.
- Ensure the transmitter is at 0 psig or 0 psia (vacuum if absolute).
- Adjust the "Z" pot with a jeweler's screwdriver or suitable instrument until the output is 4 mA, 0 V, 0.5 V, or 1 V, depending on the model.
- Replace protective screw(s).
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Do not adjust the "S" (Span) pot during zero trimming. Span adjustment should only be done during recalibration with a known pressure source.
Figure 3.1 shows the Zero & Span adjustment pots.
? DANGER: Protective screws must be replaced using 28 oz-in of torque to create a seal.
Re-Calibration
This procedure requires a pressure source with at least ±0.1% accuracy.
- Ensure the transmitter is at 0 psig or 0 psia (vacuum if absolute) and adjust zero as per zero trimming instructions.
- Apply full scale pressure to the port and adjust the "S" (Span) pot until the full scale signal is reached.
- Re-check zero and re-adjust if necessary.
- Repeat the previous two steps until no further adjustment is required.
? NOTE: The PT-400 can also be returned to the factory for repair and/or adjustment.

Chapter 4: Hazardous Location Installation and Certification
Intrinsically Safe Wiring Diagram (4-20mA Output)
This diagram illustrates the intrinsically safe wiring for installation in Class I, Div. 1, Groups C, D / Class I, Zone 0, Group IIB environments. It details connections between non-hazardous and hazardous areas, typically involving an intrinsically safe barrier. Key parameters for the PT-400 L1 (4-20mA) are listed: Vmax, Ui = 28 Vdc; Imax, Ii = 110mA; Pmax, Pi = 0.77W; Ci = 55nF; Li = 7.95µH. Installation must comply with relevant electrical codes (NEC, ANSI/ISA RP12.6, Canadian Electrical Code).
Non-Incendive Wiring Diagrams
These diagrams show non-incendive wiring for installation in Class I, Division 2, Groups C and D / Class I, Zone 2, Group IIB environments.
- Non-Incendive Wiring Diagram (4-20mA Output): Similar to intrinsically safe setup but for non-incendive classification. Parameters listed are Vmax, Ui = 28 Vdc; Imax, Ii = 110mA; Pmax, Pi = 0.77W; Ci = 55nF; Li = 7.95µH.
- Non-Incendive Wiring Diagram (0-5VDC Output): Parameters listed are Vmax, Ui = 28 Vdc; Imax, Ii = 110mA; Pmax, Pi = 0.77W; Ci = 0µF; Li = 0µH.
- Non-Incendive Wiring Diagram (0-10VDC Output): Parameters listed are Vmax, Ui = 28 Vdc; Imax, Ii = 110mA; Pmax, Pi = 0.77W; Ci = 0µF; Li = 0µH.
All non-incendive installations require connection to suitably certified apparatus and must comply with electrical codes.
CSA Certificate of Compliance
Certificates confirm compliance for APG products, including the PT-400 series, with various hazardous location standards (e.g., Class 2258 03, 2258 83, 2258 04, 2258 84).
