Introduction to the Copeland Scroll ZRK5 Compressor
The 2010 phaseout of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in new HVAC systems marked a significant milestone for contractors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This transition facilitated the switch to environmentally friendly refrigerants and opened avenues for business growth. In response, Copeland developed the Copeland Scroll™ ZRK5 compressor, offering a focused product line for aftermarket replacement needs. This line represents the latest advancements in helping customers service their HVAC systems with replacement compressors that deliver enhanced performance.
An Optimized Offering
The Copeland Scroll ZRK5 compressor is engineered for both residential and light commercial applications. It has been optimized for post-2010 R-22 service and continued OEM system production for export markets. Copeland Scroll ZRK5 compressors utilize polyolester (POE) lubricant to enhance application compatibility with both R-22 and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant applications, such as R-407C.
Selection Made Easy
Recognizing the need for swift, sound decisions in daily operations, Copeland has simplified compressor replacement. The new line consolidates 51 previous models into just 12, significantly reducing the number of model variations that wholesalers and distributors need to stock for service applications. The ten ZRK5 models, when paired with two existing scroll models, are designed to cover both R-22 and R-407C applications, supporting system capacities from 1.5 to five tons.

Internal Safety Controls
Copeland Scroll compressors are equipped with a variety of internal safety controls designed to ensure the proper actuation of the internal line-break motor protection. These safety features include:
- 1. Temperature Operated Disc: Features a bimetallic disc that senses discharge temperature and opens at approximately 270°F internal plenum temperature.
- 2. Internal Pressure Relief: Opens at approximately 400 +/- 50 pounds differential.
- 3. Floating Seal: Separates the high side from the low side and also prevents the compressor from drawing into a vacuum, which could damage the electrical terminal.
- 4. Internal Motor Protector: Senses both internal temperature and amperage. A tripped motor protector will exhibit a high shell temperature. Allow the compressor to cool to reset the motor protector.
