EMI Warning
Shoprider® scooters may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources like radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters, two-way radios, and cellular phones. This interference can cause the scooter to release its brakes, move unintentionally, or damage its control system.
Sources of Radiated EMI:
- 1. Hand-held portable transceivers: Examples include CB radios, walkie-talkies, security, fire, and police transceivers, and cellular phones. Note: Some cellular phones transmit signals even when not in use.
- 2. Medium-range mobile transceivers: Used in police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and taxis, typically with antennas mounted externally.
- 3. Long-range transmitters and transceivers: Such as commercial broadcast transmitters and amateur (HAM) radios.
Note: Other devices like cordless phones, laptops, radios, TVs, CD players, cassette players, electric shavers, and hair dryers are generally not likely to cause problems.
Scooter Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
EM energy intensity increases closer to the transmitting antenna. Hand-held radio sources are of particular concern as they can bring high levels of EM energy close to the scooter's control system, affecting movement and braking. The following warnings are recommended to prevent interference:
Warnings
- Do not operate hand-held transceivers (e.g., CB radios) or turn on personal communication devices (e.g., cellular phones) while the scooter is ON.
- Be aware of nearby transmitters (radio/TV stations) and avoid coming close to them.
- If unintended movement or brake release occurs, turn the scooter OFF as soon as it is safe.
- Adding accessories or modifying the scooter may increase susceptibility to EMI.
- There is no easy way to evaluate the scooter's overall immunity.
- Report all incidents of unintended movement or braking to your Shoprider® provider and note any nearby EMI sources.
WARNING! Shoprider® is not responsible for damage or injury incurred due to improper and unsafe use of the scooter.
Adjustments
Adjustments for Transport (Figure 2)
To prepare the scooter for transport: Remove the basket by lifting it off its bracket. Release the seat (refer to Figure 3). Disconnect the battery pack by pushing the release button on the side of the round metal connection plug and pulling the plug out. The battery pack is secured by two Velcro strips. Note: The serial number is located on the frame beneath the battery pack. Fold down the tiller by loosening the tiller tightening knob at its base.
Seat Removal & Upgrades (Figure 3)
To remove the seat, loosen the tightening knob on the bottom of the seat and slide the seat off. An optional seat upgrade includes adjustable armrests and a back pad with a zipper pouch for comfort and convenience. The armrests flip up for easy sideways transfer. The back seat pad pack has a utility zipper pouch on its reverse side for carrying items.
Scooter Tiller Controls (Figure 4)
- Speed Controls: Allows setting speed between slow (turtle) and fast (rabbit).
- Battery Level Indicator Gauge: Shows battery charge level when the scooter is in drive. Always charge batteries fully before use. Caution: Do not let the gauge needle go to empty, as complete discharge can cause irreversible battery damage.
- Horn: Operated by a yellow button next to the power switch on the tiller.
- Hand Lever Controls: The left lever controls reverse, and the right lever controls forward motion. Squeezing the levers controls speed up to the selected level. Releasing the levers automatically stops the scooter via the electromagnetic brake.
- On/Off Switch: Located on the tiller. When ON, a red light illuminates, and the battery gauge needle moves. There might be a slight delay before controls are active.
- Electromagnetic Brake: Automatically engages when hand levers are pressed or released, providing smooth acceleration and deceleration.
Drive/Freewheel Operation (Figure 5)
The drive/freewheel lever (yellow) is located at the right rear. Pushing the lever UP disengages the drive mechanism (neutral), allowing the scooter to be pushed. Pushing the lever DOWN re-engages the drive mechanism (drive). Note: The scooter will not operate in the neutral position. Turn the scooter OFF, push the lever DOWN, and turn it ON again to reset circuits.
WARNING! Always re-engage the freewheeling device after use to prevent injury.
Anti-tip Wheels
Located at the rear of the scooter frame (Figure 5). The scooter should not be used unless these wheels are in place.
Shoprider® is not responsible for damage or injury incurred due to improper or misuse of the scooter.
Battery Pack and Serial Number
Battery Pack (Figure 6)
The battery pack is designed for easy access and transportability. It contains a reset button to protect electronics; if the scooter won't turn on, push this button. The 3-pin round plug is removed by pressing the release button while pulling. The battery pack is secured by Velcro straps.
Scooter Serial Number (Figure 7)
The scooter serial number is an alphanumeric combination of 13 characters, located under the battery pack. It is recommended to write this number down for future reference. The battery pack is removed by pulling it firmly upwards.
Starting to Drive Your Scooter
First Time Use
Before first use, charge the batteries fully (up to 12 hours). Proper initial charging benefits battery efficiency and prevents permanent damage.
Getting Started
- Select a level area with ample space.
- Mount the scooter by lifting the armrest (if installed) and sliding onto the seat. Use armrests for support; do not use the seat back or tiller.
- Adjust the seat height as previously described.
Starting Scooter Movement
- Ensure you are seated comfortably.
- Turn the switch ON (indicated by a red light).
- Set the speed to slow (turtle).
- Squeeze the right hand lever (yellow dot) to move forward slowly. The harder you squeeze, the faster it goes, up to the selected speed.
- Release the lever to stop; the electromagnetic brake engages automatically.
Steering
The scooter steers easily. Ensure wide clearance when turning to avoid obstacles. In tight spaces, turn the tiller handles and apply power gently. The scooter turns tightly but remains stable at appropriate speeds.
Reversing
Before reversing, check the area behind for hazards. Set speed to low (turtle). Squeeze the left hand lever (red dot) and steer wide of corners and obstacles.
Dismounting
Before dismounting, turn the scooter switch OFF (red light off). Push the armrest (if installed) upward and slide off the seat. Use armrests for support; do not use the seat back or tiller.
CAUTION: Exercise care when mounting or dismounting, and do not use the tiller or footrest for support.
Extra Guidelines in the Control of Your Scooter
Ramps
Scooter stability depends on seating position, slope angle, height, and weight. Approach inclines directly, avoid turns, and use slow speed for descents to ensure a safe, controlled stop when levers are released.
Safe Climbing Angle
Always follow the safe climbing angle guidelines shown in Figure 8. Caution: Do not turn off the switch while the unit is in motion.
Grass and Gravel
The scooter performs well on many surfaces. Avoid long grass, loose gravel, and sand. Note: Do not operate in wet weather or on wet surfaces, as this may short out the motor or cause irreversible damage. Note: To preserve battery charge, the scooter may enter sleep mode after idle periods. Reset by turning the unit off and on again.
Figure 8 illustrates climbing angles: 9° (15%) supports up to 130lbs (60kg), and 6° (10%) supports up to 187lbs (85kg).
Batteries and Battery Charging
Batteries
The Shoprider® Echo 3 Portable scooter uses maintenance-free, sealed lead-acid batteries. Battery life and performance can be affected by temperature, terrain, battery condition, user weight, and care. The battery gauge is most accurate when the scooter is moving. Note: The gauge may show full when stopped. Active users may use up to 30% of battery capacity daily; inactive users up to 50% weekly. Batteries should be charged overnight. Keeping batteries discharged can cause permanent damage and shorten battery life.
Keeping Batteries Charged
Regular charging extends battery life. Familiarize yourself with the range and charging cycles before long journeys.
Battery Charger
The scooter uses a 2-amp off-board transformer charger. It has a built-in charging port on the battery pack, allowing charging without the scooter.
First Time Use
Charge batteries fully (up to 12 hours) before first use for optimal efficiency and to prevent damage.
Charging
Connect the 3-pin male plug to the 3-pin female charging socket on the battery pack. Plug the A/C cord into the wall socket and the other end into the charger. The charger has two indicator lights: red indicates charging, green indicates fully charged. After charging, unplug the A/C cord from the wall, then the 3-pin lead from the battery pack.
WARNING: Only use the original Shoprider approved charger. This charger is for indoor use only and should not be exposed to rain or water spray. Do not leave the charger plugged in if it is not charging.
Maintenance
Tires
The scooter has flat-free tires, requiring no air pressure maintenance.
General Maintenance and Lubrication
- Regularly inspect wheel bolts, seat, and arm tightening bolts.
- Most lubricated components are maintenance-free and sealed. Lubrication is not required for these. However, apply a light coat of multipurpose grease to driving axles and the seat post.
DO NOT USE TOO MUCH GREASE! Drips can stain or damage surfaces.
- Periodically check driving axles for hair and debris buildup, which can hinder performance.
- Check batteries regularly. For extended battery life, charge fully after each use. Weak, discharged, or old batteries can cause various problems, including charging issues, reduced speed, and loss of range. Contact your Shoprider® provider for battery replacement.
Troubleshooting Guide
Circuit Breaker (Reset Button)
The scooter has electronic controls with a circuit breaker on the battery pack for overload protection. If the scooter stops unexpectedly, check if the circuit breaker has popped and reset it. Note: To preserve battery charge, the scooter may enter sleep mode after idle periods. To exit sleep mode, turn the scooter switch off and then on again.
Check List
If the scooter fails to operate, check the following:
- Unit is switched on.
- Drive/Freewheel mechanism is in the drive position.
- All plugs and connectors are clean and firmly connected.
- Battery level shows full charge.
If the freewheel device was operated with the scooter ON, it will not operate until the ignition key is switched OFF and then ON again. Consult your dealer if the scooter still does not run after checking these points.
