Children with neuromuscular weakness may struggle to clear mucus from their airways during a cold. This guide provides steps to help manage symptoms.
Recommended Steps for Mucus Clearance
Follow these steps every four hours and as needed:
- Cough machine: four sets of 5 breaths
- Chest physiotherapy: 10-20 minutes
- Cough machine: four sets of 5 breaths
- Postural drainage: 15-30 minutes (if needed)
- Cough machine: four sets of 5 breaths
Use the cough machine whenever rattling is heard or coughing is difficult. Suction the mouth if mucus cannot be cleared from the throat.
Oxygen Monitoring and BiPAP Use
Monitor oxygen levels with an oximeter daily when well, and three times daily or as needed when sick. If levels drop below 94%, use the cough machine and recheck.
If the child uses BiPAP, use the machine with a nasal mask during sleep and naps. Weakness during colds may require constant BiPAP use.
When to Call for Assistance
- Low Oxygen Levels: Call if oxygen levels are 92% or less and the cough machine does not improve them. Hospitalization may be necessary.
- Vomiting: Vomiting can lead to dehydration, which is serious for children with neuromuscular weakness. Call immediately.
