Description
This Readme file provides specific installation instructions and important information before performing a firmware update for your HP LaserJet Series printer or MFP. It covers installation for single and multiple printer updates, as well as additional update, installation, and troubleshooting information. For device features, refer to the online user guide.
What is included in a Firmware bundle?
The HP LaserJet printer firmware update file contains firmware for the printer, embedded JetDirect (if applicable), and HP paper handling accessories. Sending the Remote Firmware Upgrade file upgrades the engine and all connected accessories.
Who needs this firmware?
HP Inc. provides periodic firmware updates to improve software performance and resolve issues. Updates may be necessary if documented issues are identified that could benefit from resolution. These updates are available on the HP support website.
Determining the current version level of your firmware
To check the current firmware version:
- Go to the printer's control panel.
- Select the Reports application.
- Select the Configuration/Status Pages menu.
- Select the Configuration Page option.
- Select Print.
On the printed Configuration page, look for "Device Information" for the Firmware Datecode and Firmware Revision (e.g., Firmware Datecode: 20201209, Firmware Revision: 2501124_004336).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Interactive Update Required
This firmware file requires an interactive update method. Traditional FTP, LPR, or Port 9100 methods are NOT supported for these products/models. Please use one of the following methods:
- Embedded Web Server
- Walk-up USB port
- Pre-Boot walk-up USB thumb drive (for devices unable to boot to READY)
- Web JetAdmin (Supported with version 10.4 SR9 or newer)

TLS version synchronization is maintained for secure connections with LDAP Contact List. Self-Signed ID and CA certificates no longer regenerate without cause after a reboot. Third-party solutions created in 2021 now load correctly via the solution installer.
- Embedded JetDirect: Resolved a "USB hubs cannot be attached in series..." error when plugging in a JD3100w using a short cable. Corrected missing digits in the Gateway address on the control panel when the language is set to Japanese.

Installation Instructions
Note: An update may take 10 minutes or more to complete. The device waits for idle I/O channels before cycling power.
Print a configuration page before updating. To do this:
- Go to the printer's control panel.
- Select the Reports menu.
- Select the Configuration/Status Pages menu.
- Select the Configuration Page option.
- Select Print.
Verify the Firmware Datecode and Firmware Revision in the "Device Information" section.
The update time depends on I/O transfer and printer re-initialization. Print jobs in the queue will print before the update.
Note: The LaserJet will reboot after the update. Print a Configuration Page to verify the new firmware.
Additional information to know
Firmware files are in the format "xxxxxxx.bdl". An interactive update method is required; FTP, LPR, or Port 9100 methods are not supported.
How to perform firmware upgrades:
Embedded Web Server (EWS)
Ensure the control panel is at a Ready screen.
- Open an Internet Browser.
- Enter the printer's IP address in the URL line.
- Select the Firmware Upgrade link from the General tab.
- Select "Choose File", browse to the firmware upgrade file (.bdl), and select it.
- Select the Install button.
Note: Do not close the browser window or interrupt communication until the Confirmation Page is displayed. The printer will reboot automatically unless downgrading.
Note: An update may take 10 minutes or more. Verify installation by printing a Configuration Page.
Walk-up USB thumb drive
Ensure the control panel is at a Ready screen.
- Copy the .bdl file to a portable USB flash memory device (thumb drive).
- Turn the printer ON.
- Select the Support Tools menu.
- Select the Maintenance menu.
- Select the USB Firmware Upgrade menu.
- Insert the USB flash drive into the front control panel USB port.
- Select the correct .bdl file.
- Select the Install button.
- Select the Upgrade, Re-install, or Downgrade option.
Note: USB Flash Drives not in Fat32 format or with a CD formatted partition may not be recognized. The printer will reboot automatically. The upgrade process may take up to 10 minutes. Do not interrupt the process. Verify installation by printing a Configuration Page.
Pre-Boot walk-up USB thumb drive
Use only if the printer cannot boot to READY.
- Copy the .bdl file to a portable USB flash memory device.
- Turn the printer ON.
- Press the "X" button or middle of the Touch Screen when the "1/8" appears under the HP logo.
- Navigate to Administrator, then select OK.
- Navigate to Download, then select OK.
- Insert the USB flash drive with the .bdl file.
- Navigate to USB Thumbdrive, then select OK.
- Navigate to the .bdl file, then select OK.
Note: Ensure the firmware file is in the root directory. Select the correct file if multiple are present. The process may take up to 10 minutes.
When "Complete" appears, power cycle the printer. The printer will boot and start the upgrade. Verify installation by printing a Configuration Page.
Web Jetadmin
- Start Web Jetadmin 10.4 SR9 or newer.
- In "Device Management", select "All Devices".
- Locate your device or enter its IP address in "Quick Device Discovery".
- Select multiple devices of the same model number using Control-Click or Shift-Click if needed.
- Right-click the device and select "Upgrade firmware...".
- Select "Device firmware" and click "Next".
- If the correct firmware version is listed, click "Next" to start the upgrade.
Note: If the correct firmware version is not listed, manually upload it into WJA via "Firmware/Firmware Repository" > "Upload".
Note: Do not turn off the printer during the update process. Web JetAdmin will notify of any failures with reasons and options to retry.
