Mercedes-Benz ETC Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Understanding ETC Diagnostic Trouble Codes

This document provides a reference for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) related to the Electronic Transmission Control (ETC) system for Mercedes-Benz model 163 and other compatible vehicles. The Hand-Held Tester (HHT) is used to read DTCs, which will indicate defective electrical components and refer to specific test steps in the Diagnostic Manual.

Before proceeding with diagnosis, review section 11 and this guide. Key steps include checking and correcting the AFT level, verifying AFT condition, connecting the HHT to the data link connector (X11/4), and performing a Quick Test. The HHT display will show defective components or direct to relevant test steps. To further localize intermittent DTCs or identify root causes, subtract 96 from the displayed value (098 to 161) to determine the relevant DTC. Additional information for a displayed DTC can be retrieved by pressing the enter key.

If multiple DTCs are stored in the ETC or ME-SFI memory, further tests like comparing nominal and actual values or activating components can be performed using the HHT. If no DTCs are stored, the issue may be hydraulic-mechanical; in such cases, proceed with the Complaint Related Diagnostic Chart (see 13/1). For USA vehicles, an illuminated "CHECK ENGINE" MIL (A1e26) will correspond to DTCs in the engine control module memory. Transmission adaptation (adaption of the ETC) is detailed in section 11.
