With careful wound management and adequate wound drainage, the risk of post-surgical wound infection can be reduced. To help reduce risk and promote wound drainage, Medline offers a full range of more than 65 high-quality closed- and open-wound drainage products and systems for the collection and measurement of exudate.

Product Types:

• Closed Wound Drains: Formed by tubes. One end connects to a trocar inserted into the patient's wound. The other end connects to a bag or reservoir (evacuator) for exudate collection.
• Open Wound Drains: Systems that drain fluid from the wound onto a gauze pad or into a stoma bag.

Drains

These are the tube-like devices through which the exudate flows. There are three main types: Channel, Perforated, and Penrose.

Channel, or Blake® Drain

• Types: Round/Silicone, Flat/Silicone.
• Use: For closed wound systems.

Perforated, or JP Drain

• Types: Round/Silicone, Flat/Silicone.
• Use: For closed wound systems.

Penrose Drain

• Material: Latex or options not made with natural rubber latex.
• Use: For open wound systems.
• Feature: Internal structure prevents the drain from collapsing.

Evacuators

This is the device into which the exudate drains. There are two main types:

• Bulb Evacuator: Also called a Grenade Evacuator. Material: Silicone.
• 3-Spring Evacuator: Also called a Pancake or Hamburger Evacuator. Used in conjunction with PVC drains.

Trocar

The trocar is a sharply pointed shaft, usually with a three-sided point to help insert the drain into the patient's body. One end is inserted in the patient's wound and the other end is connected to the drain and the evacuator.

Medline wound drainage products can be ordered individually or in customized kits—some with drain, evacuator, and trocar; others with drain and evacuator. All kits in this brochure are indicated with an orange highlight.

CHANNEL SILICONE WOUND DRAINS

• Utilize internal channels or flutes to swiftly remove exudate.
• Independent channels facilitate drainage and lower risk of occlusion.
• Indicator dot makes drain placement quick and easy.
• Available in various sizes of Round (Full-Fluted) and Flat (3/4 or Full-Fluted).
• Radiopaque.
• Not made with natural rubber latex.
• Sterile.

PERFORATED SILICONE WOUND DRAINS

• Smooth perforations are heat-polished for easy, comfortable removal.
• Perforations are positioned in alternative 90° planes for effective exudate removal.
• Available in various sizes of Round and Flat drains.
• Indicator dot makes drain placement quick and easy.
• Radiopaque.
• Not made with natural rubber latex.
• Sterile.

BULB EVACUATORS (SILICONE)

• Designed specifically for smaller procedures where less exudate is anticipated.
• Includes convenient clip to attach to bed, wheelchair, or IV stand for increased mobility.
• Sterile.

PVC 3-SPRING EVACUATOR KITS AND DRAINS

• Available in kits including: 400cc, 3-spring evacuator, silicone tubing and “Y” connector, and drain with trocar.
• Drains also available individually.
• Radiopaque.
• Not made with natural rubber latex.
• Sterile.

PENROSE DRAINS

• Drains (latex and silicone—drains not made with natural rubber latex) are precut for ease of use and to help eliminate problems in autoclaving.
• Uniform wall thickness over entire length.
• Packaged in peel-open pouch for ease of handling in the O.R.
• Sterile.
