Vibration Damper Holding Tool

1.8/2.0 TFSi/TSi VAG

Product Code: 6951

This is an essential item required to maintain the engine timing when removing the front vibration damper.

Applications: Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen.

Equivalent to OEM T10531.

Visit www.lasertools.co.uk for more information.

Introduction

A comprehensive kit used for dismantling and assembling the vibration damper on the vehicles listed. The vibration damper fitted to the VAG 1.8/2.0 TFSi/TSi engines is held in place by a single central bolt. The pulley clamps the crankshaft timing chain sprocket against the end of the crankshaft; there is no traditional keyway and the sprocket is not supported by the crankshaft.

If the pulley bolt is removed without using this tool, the crankshaft chain sprocket can easily separate from the crankshaft, causing the timing position to be lost.

This essential kit is required to maintain the engine timing when removing the front vibration damper and should be used whenever the vibration damper is removed, for instance, when replacing the front crankshaft oil seal.

N.B: For replacement of the camshaft drive chain, additional tooling will be required – see Laser Tools Part No 5981 Engine Timing Kit and Part 5920 Crankshaft Holding Tool. This kit can also be used on earlier engines as the VAG tool T10531 replaces the older tool T10368.

Engines covered include: 1.8/2.0 TFSi/TSi petrol engines from 2007 onwards.

Applications include: Seat, Skoda, Audi & Volkswagen ranges.

Equivalent to OEM tools – T10531/1, T10531/2, T10531/3, T10531/4.

Description of visual: A metal case containing a specialized tool kit for holding vibration dampers. The kit includes a large circular tool with adjustable arms, and several smaller components, all neatly arranged within the case.

Instructions

The following instructions are for guidance only. Please refer to OEM derived data such as the vehicles manufacturer's own data or Autodata.

The use of this vibration damper holding tool is purely down to the user's discretion, and The Tool Connection Ltd cannot be held responsible for any damage caused whatsoever.

Preparation

Turn the engine to TDC on No.1 cylinder.

Holding the crankshaft pulley with a suitable holding tool (Laser 5920), loosen the vibration damper fixing bolt by 180° (1/2 a turn).

Remove the 2 engine front cover fixing bolts as identified in the instructions for component A. VAG OEM instructions require these bolts to be replaced with new bolts.

⚠ WARNING: do not remove the bolt without putting component A in place as described below.

Component A - Vibration Damper Holding Tool

After loosening the crankshaft vibration damper fixing bolt by 180°, fit component A over the vibration damper as shown. Tighten the 2 fixing screws evenly so the holding tool sits squarely on the pulley. Tighten fixing bolts hand tight. Once component A is fitted, the damper fixing bolt can be removed.

NOTE: the fixing screws for A are designed to screw into the angled front face of the engine.

Description of visual: A diagram illustrating engine timing, showing the crankshaft, timing chain, and sprocket. It indicates the need to maintain timing when removing the vibration damper.

Component C - Crankshaft Sprocket Holding Tool

Loosen off the end bolt of component C so the split collet components are fully retracted. Insert the assembly into the end of the crankshaft and screw it in as far as it will go. Turn the end bolt clockwise so that the split collet components of C expand and grip the crankshaft sprocket inside the engine. Now component A can be removed with the vibration damper.

Description of visual: Diagram showing the insertion and expansion of the crankshaft sprocket holding tool (Component C) into the crankshaft end.

Components B - Crankshaft Sprocket Holding Tool Adapter

Fit component B as shown. Ensure the larger tooth on component D corresponds with the larger tooth on the crankshaft sprocket, as shown by X.

Description of visual: Diagrams illustrating the fitting of the crankshaft sprocket holding tool adapter (Component B) and the holding tool nut (Component D) onto the crankshaft sprocket.

Component D - Crankshaft Sprocket Holding Tool Nut

Fit the holding tool nut D and tighten. If required, the crankshaft is now safe to turn by turning the larger Hex of D. Only turn the engine over with the spark plugs removed.

Fitting of Vibration Damper

The fitting of the vibration damper is the reverse of the above process.

⚠ WARNING: it is very important not to remove component C until component A has been re-installed.
