3 Overview
3.1 Brushcutter, battery and charger
Diagram Description: The brushcutter assembly includes a control handle (1) with trigger and locking levers, a battery compartment (3), a loop handle (4), a shaft (6) with locking button (5) and levers (8), a bump guard (7), and a pushbutton (11) for LEDs (10). 3.2 Deflector and cutting attachments

4.2 Intended Use
The STIHL FSA 30.0 grass trimmer/lawn edge trimmer (brushcutter) is designed for mowing grass. Never use the brushcutter in the rain. The STIHL AS battery powers the brushcutter.
⚠️ WARNING: Using batteries and chargers not approved by STIHL can cause fire or explosion, leading to serious injury or property damage. Always use the brushcutter with a STIHL AS battery and recharge it with a STIHL AL 1 charger. Using the product for unintended purposes can cause material damage and serious or fatal injuries. Always use the brushcutter, battery, and charger as described in this User Manual.
4.3 Requirements for users

Always read and understand the User Manual and keep it in a safe place for reference. If passing the product to another person, include the User Manual. Ensure the user is rested, physically, sensorially, and mentally capable, able to recognize risks, is an adult or under supervision, has received instruction from an authorized dealer or experienced user, and is not under the influence of alcohol, medication, or drugs. If unsure, contact a STIHL authorized dealer.
4.4 Clothing and equipment
⚠️ WARNING: Objects can be thrown at high speed during operation, causing injury. Wear close-fitting safety glasses (tested to EN 166 or equivalent), face protection, and long trousers made from resistant material. Dust generated during operation may damage the respiratory passages; wear a dust respirator mask if necessary. Inappropriate clothing can snag on parts, leading to serious injury; wear close-fitting clothing and remove scarves and jewelry. Contact with the rotating cutting attachment can cause serious injury; wear robust footwear and long trousers made from resistant material.
4.5 Work Area and Surroundings
4.5.1 Brushcutter
⚠️ WARNING: Bystanders, children, and animals may be seriously injured or property damaged due to the brushcutter's operation and thrown objects. Keep them at a distance of 15 m (50 ft). Do not leave the brushcutter unattended and ensure children cannot play with it. The brushcutter is not waterproof; do not operate in rain or damp environments to avoid electric shock. Electrical components can produce sparks, posing a fire and explosion risk in flammable environments.
4.5.2 Battery
⚠️ WARNING: Bystanders, children, and animals may be seriously injured by the battery's dangers. Keep them away from the work area. Do not leave the battery unattended. Batteries are not protected against all ambient conditions and may catch fire, explode, or be irreparably damaged if exposed to certain conditions. Protect batteries from heat and fire, do not throw them into fire, do not charge/use/store them outside specified temperature limits (-20°C to +50°C for use, -20°C to +70°C for storage), and do not immerse them in liquids. Keep batteries away from small metal parts, high pressure, and microwaves. Protect from chemicals and salts.
4.5.3 Charger
⚠️ WARNING: Bystanders and children may be seriously or fatally injured by chargers or electric current. Keep them away from the work area. Chargers are not waterproof; do not operate in rain or damp environments. Chargers are not protected against all ambient conditions and may catch fire or explode. Operate chargers in enclosed, dry rooms, away from flammable or explosive environments, and not on combustible surfaces. Do not use or store chargers outside specified temperature limits. Ensure connecting cables are routed safely to prevent tripping hazards and damage. Unroll cable reels completely. If mounting on a wall, ensure no wiring or pipes are present. Mount the charger securely.
4.6 Safe Condition
4.6.1 Brushcutter
The brushcutter is safe if it is undamaged, clean, dry, and its controls function properly. The correct cutting attachment and deflector must be mounted, and only genuine STIHL accessories should be used. ⚠️ WARNING: If the brushcutter is not in a safe condition, components may fail, rendering safety devices ineffective, leading to serious or fatal injury. Do not use an undamaged brushcutter, clean and dry it if dirty or wet. Never modify the brushcutter, except for approved attachment/deflector combinations. If controls malfunction, do not use. Never mount metal cutting attachments. Mount attachments and deflectors as described. Never insert objects into openings. Replace worn or damaged labels. Consult a STIHL dealer if unsure.
4.6.2 Deflector
The deflector is safe if it is undamaged and the line limiter blade is correctly installed. ⚠️ WARNING: Non-compliant products can lead to component failure and loss of safety function, resulting in serious injury. Use only undamaged deflectors with correctly installed line limiter blades. Contact your STIHL servicing dealer for queries.
4.6.3 Mowing Head
The mowing head is safe if it is undamaged, not jammed, correctly installed, and firmly tightened. Mowing lines must be properly installed. If using Polycut heads with polymer blades, ensure blades are free of damage, properly mounted, and within wear limits. ⚠️ WARNING: Unsafe mowing heads, lines, or blades can detach and be ejected at high speed, causing serious injury. Use only undamaged mowing heads and blades. Never use metal objects instead of nylon lines or polymer blades. Observe wear limits. Consult a STIHL dealer if unsure.
4.6.4 Battery
The battery is safe if it is undamaged, clean, dry, and functions properly without modification.
⚠️ WARNING: An unsafe battery can operate unsafely, causing serious injury. Never work with a damaged battery or attempt to charge a defective one. Clean dirty batteries. Dry wet batteries. Never modify batteries or insert objects into openings. Do not short-circuit battery contacts or open the battery. Replace worn or damaged labels. Fluid leakage from a damaged battery can irritate skin or eyes; avoid contact, wash affected areas with water and soap, or rinse eyes with water for 15 minutes and consult a doctor. Damaged batteries may smell unusual, emit smoke, or burn, causing serious injury or property damage. If unusual smell or smoke occurs, do not use the battery and keep it away from combustibles. If the battery catches fire, attempt to extinguish it with a fire extinguisher or water.
4.6.5 Charger
⚠️ WARNING: Non-compliant components can lead to malfunction and loss of safety function, resulting in serious or fatal injuries. Do not use a damaged charger. Clean dirty or wet chargers and allow them to dry. Never modify the charger or insert objects into openings. Do not short-circuit charger contacts or open the charger.
4.7 Working
⚠️ WARNING: In certain situations, users may lose concentration, leading to stumbling, falling, and serious injury. Work calmly and methodically. Do not use in poor light. Operate the brushcutter alone. Keep the cutting attachment close to the ground. Watch for obstacles. Maintain balance. Take breaks if fatigued.
The rotating cutting attachment can cause serious injury. Do not touch it. If the attachment is blocked, switch off the brushcutter, remove the battery, and then remove the obstruction. If the brushcutter's behavior changes or feels unusual, it may be unsafe, leading to serious injury or property damage. Stop working, remove the battery, and contact a STIHL dealer. Vibrations may occur; wear gloves, take breaks, and consult a doctor if circulatory disorders appear. If the cutting attachment contacts a foreign object, it or its parts may be ejected at high speed, causing injury or damage. Remove foreign objects from the work area. Contact with hard objects can cause sparks and damage, potentially leading to fire and injury. Do not use in flammable environments. Ensure the cutting attachment is safe. The attachment continues to rotate briefly after the trigger is released; wait for it to stop completely.
4.8 Charging
⚠️ WARNING: Damaged or defective chargers may produce unusual smells or smoke, causing personal injury and property damage. Disconnect the plug from the wall outlet. Chargers can overheat and cause fires if heat dissipation is inadequate. Do not cover the charger.
4.9 Connecting to the power supply
Contact with live components can occur due to damaged cables, plugs, or improperly installed sockets.
⚡ DANGER: Contact with live parts can cause electric shock, leading to serious or fatal injury. Ensure cables, cords, and plugs are undamaged. If a cable is damaged, do not touch it, disconnect the power supply, and ensure hands are dry before touching. Plug into a properly installed, shockproof socket with the correct fuse rating. Install the charger with a residual current device (RCD) (30 mA, 30 ms).
Unsuitable extension cords can cause electric shock. Use an extension cord with the correct cross-section (see 20.4). ⚠️ WARNING: Overvoltage can damage the charger if line voltage or frequency are incorrect. Ensure mains voltage and frequency match the charger's rating plate. Connecting to a power strip may overload components, causing overheating, fire, injury, or property damage. Ensure power strip specifications are not exceeded. Incorrectly routed cables can be damaged or cause tripping hazards. Route cables to prevent tripping, tension, tangling, damage, kinking, crushing, or chafing. Protect cables from heat, oil, and chemicals. Lay cables on a dry surface. Ensure cable reels are fully unrolled. If mounting on a wall, check for hidden wiring or pipes to prevent electric shock. Securely mount the charger.
4.10 Transporting
4.10.1 Trimmer
⚠️ WARNING: The trimmer may tip or shift during transport, causing personal injury and property damage. Remove the battery. Secure the trimmer with lashing straps or a net.
4.10.2 Battery
⚠️ WARNING: Batteries are not protected against all ambient conditions and may be damaged, causing property damage. Never transport a damaged battery. Transport batteries in supplied bags if available. Batteries may tip or shift during transport. Pack batteries securely to prevent movement. Batteries are subject to dangerous goods regulations (UN 3480); consult transport regulations at www.stihl.com/safety-data-sheets.
4.10.3 Charger
⚠️ WARNING: Chargers can tip or move during transport, causing personal injury and property damage. Disconnect the plug, remove the battery, and transport in a supplied bag or secure it with straps/nets. Do not use the connecting cable for carrying or hanging the charger.
4.11 Storing
4.11.1 Trimmer
⚠️ WARNING: Children can be seriously injured by trimmers. Remove the battery. Store the trimmer out of reach of children. Dampness can corrode electrical contacts and damage the trimmer. Remove the battery and store the trimmer in a clean, dry condition.
4.11.2 Battery
⚠️ WARNING: Children can be seriously injured by batteries. Store batteries out of reach of children. Batteries are not protected against all ambient conditions and may be irreparably damaged. Store batteries in a clean, dry, enclosed space, separate from the brushcutter. If stored in the charger, disconnect the mains plug and store at 40-60% charge (2 green LEDs). Do not store outside specified temperature limits.
ℹ️ NOTICE: Improper battery storage can lead to deep discharge and irreparable damage. Charge batteries before storing, maintaining a 40-60% charge. Store batteries separately from the brushcutter.
4.11.3 Charger
⚠️ WARNING: Children can be seriously injured or killed by chargers. Store chargers out of reach of children. Chargers are not protected against all ambient conditions. If hot, allow to cool. Store in a clean, dry, enclosed space. Do not store outside specified temperature limits. Do not hang or carry the charger by its connecting cable.
4.12 Cleaning, Maintenance and Repair
⚠️ WARNING: The brushcutter may start unintentionally during cleaning/maintenance if the battery is left in. Remove the battery. Aggressive cleaning agents, water jets, or pointed objects can damage components. Improper cleaning or servicing can lead to malfunction, loss of safety function, and serious injury. Do not attempt to service or repair the trimmer, cutting attachment, battery, or charger yourself. Contact a STIHL servicing dealer for servicing or repairs.
5 Preparing Trimmer for Operation
5.1 Preparing the brushcutter for operation
Before commencing work, ensure the following components are in a safe condition: Brushcutter (4.6.1), Deflector (4.6.2), Mowing head (4.6.3), Battery (4.6.4), Charger (4.6.5). Check the battery (11.3), fully charge it (6.2), clean the brushcutter (16.1), attach the deflector (7.1), attach the spacer (7.2), attach blades or mowing lines (7.4.1 or 7.5.1), attach the loop handle (7.6), adjust shaft length (8.2), adjust loop handle (8.3), and check controls (11.1). If any step cannot be performed, do not use the brushcutter and contact a STIHL authorized dealer.
6 Charging the Battery, LEDs
6.1 Mounting the charger on a wall
The charger can be mounted on a wall. Ensure suitable mounting materials are used and the charger is level. Observe dimensions: a = at least 100 mm, b = 54 mm, c = 4.5 mm, d = 9 mm, e = 2.5 mm.
6.2 Charging the Battery
Charging time varies with battery and ambient temperature. For optimal performance, observe recommended temperature ranges (20.6). Charging starts automatically when the mains plug is inserted and the battery is in the charger. The charger switches off automatically when fully charged. The battery and charger may warm up during charging.
Procedure:
- Insert the mains plug into a wall outlet. The charger performs a self-test (LED glows green then red briefly).
- Connect the connecting cable.
- Insert the battery into the charger guides and push until it clicks into place. The LED glows or flashes green, indicating charging.
- When the LED stops glowing, the battery is fully charged.
- If the charger is not in use, disconnect the mains plug.
6.3 Displaying the State of Charge
Insert the battery and depress the pushbutton. The LEDs light up steady green for about 5 seconds, indicating the charge state. A flashing green LED on the right means the battery needs charging.
6.4 LEDs on brushcutter
LEDs indicate battery charge state or faults. Steady or flashing green LEDs show charge status. Steady or flashing red LEDs indicate troubleshooting is needed (19.1) for brushcutter or battery malfunctions.
6.5 LED on Charger
The charger LED indicates operating status or faults. Green glowing or flashing indicates charging. Red glowing or flashing indicates a malfunction (19.1) in the charger or battery.
7 Assembling the Trimmer
7.1 Attaching the deflector
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Push the guard (with line limiter blade installed) into the housing guides until it stops, ensuring it is flush. Insert and tighten screws. The guard must not be removed.
7.2 Mounting the bump guard
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Insert the ends of the bump guard into the housing holes. The bump guard need not be removed.
7.3 Mounting and Removing the Mowing Head
7.3.1 Mounting the mowing head
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Push the fanwheel onto the shaft with vanes pointing downward (essential for motor cooling). Hold the fanwheel steady with one hand. Fit the mowing head onto the shaft, turn clockwise by hand, and tighten firmly.
7.3.2 Removing the mowing head
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Hold the fanwheel steady with one hand. Unscrew the mowing head counterclockwise. Remove the fanwheel.
7.4 Attaching and removing the blade
7.4.1 Installing the blades
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Soak blades in water for 12-24 hours to make them supple. Position the blade on the mowing head so the bushing aligns with the large bore. Pull the blade outwards until the bushing engages the small bore.
7.4.2 Removing the blades
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Push the blade inwards until the bushing is released from the small bore. Remove the blade upwards.
7.5 Attaching and removing the mowing line
7.5.1 Fitting mowing lines
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Soak mowing lines in water for 12-24 hours. Push the mowing line up through the right opening from below. Thread the line through the left opening from above until it reaches the symbol. Hold the short end firmly and pull the long end until it is tight against the mowing head. Cut lines to extend as far as the line limiting blade.
7.5.2 Removing the mowing lines
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Push the short end of the mowing line upwards out of the mowing head. Pull the mowing line out of the mowing head.
7.6 Mounting the loop handle
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Position the loop handle so the recess for the star knob nut is on the right. Ease the handle ends apart and place onto the control handle until it snaps into place. Insert the screw and fit/tighten the star knob nut. The loop handle should not be removed again.
8 Adjusting Trimmer for User
8.1 Adjusting the shaft angle
The shaft angle can be adjusted to suit user height and reach. Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Depress the lever (1) and hold it. Move the shaft (2) to the required position (A to D) until it engages. Release the lever.
8.2 Adjusting the shaft length
The shaft length can be adjusted to suit user height and reach. Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Hold the control handle.
8.3 Adjusting the loop handle
The loop handle can be set in different positions to suit user height and reach. Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Loosen the star knob nut (1). Tilt the loop handle (2) to the required position. Tighten the star knob nut (1) firmly.
8.4 Converting the brushcutter into an edger
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Depress the locking button (1) and hold it. Pull or push the shaft (2) to the required position. Release the locking button (1). Move the control handle (2) back and forth until it engages.
9 Removing and Fitting the Battery
9.1 Inserting the battery
Push the battery (1) into the battery compartment (2) as far as stop until it clicks into place.
9.2 Removing the Battery
Depress both locking hooks (1). The battery (2) is now unlocked and can be removed.
10 Switching the Trimmer On/Off
10.1 Switching on the brushcutter
Hold the brushcutter firmly with one hand on the control handle, wrapping your thumb around it. Hold with the other hand on the loop handle, thumb on the loop handle. Depress the lockout lever (1) and hold it. Squeeze and hold the trigger (2) with your index finger. The brushcutter accelerates, and the cutting attachment rotates. The lockout lever (1) can be released.
10.2 Switching off the brushcutter
Release the trigger. Wait for the cutting attachment to stop rotating. If it continues to rotate, remove the battery and contact a STIHL authorized dealer, as the brushcutter may be defective.
11 Testing the Trimmer and Battery
11.1 Checking the controls
Lockout lever and trigger: Remove the battery. Try pressing the trigger without the locking lever. If the trigger can be pressed, stop using the brushcutter and contact a STIHL authorized dealer (defective locking lever). Depress the locking lever and hold it. Press and release the trigger. If the trigger is stiff or does not return to idle, do not use and contact a STIHL dealer. The trigger may have a malfunction.
Switching on the brushcutter: Insert the battery. Depress and hold the locking lever. Depress and hold the trigger. The cutting attachment rotates. If 3 LEDs flash red, remove the battery and contact a STIHL dealer (brushcutter malfunction). Release the trigger; the attachment stops rotating shortly after. If it continues to rotate, remove the battery and contact a STIHL dealer (defective brushcutter).
11.2 Inspecting the cutting attachment
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Check the PolyCut 3-2 mowing head for wear marks; if visible, replace the head. Measure blade length from the large bore to the tip; if less than 45 mm, replace both blades. If a blade is damaged, replace both blades.
11.3 Checking the battery
Insert the battery. Depress the pushbutton. LEDs light up steady or flash. If LEDs do not light up or flash, do not use the brushcutter and battery; contact a STIHL servicing dealer (malfunction).
12 Operating the Trimmer
12.1 Holding and Controlling the Trimmer
Hold the trimmer with one hand on the control handle (thumb around it) and the other hand on the loop handle (thumb on it). Depress the lockout lever (1) and hold. Squeeze and hold the trigger (2). The brushcutter accelerates, and the cutting attachment rotates.
12.2 Edging
Convert the brushcutter to an edger. Guide it along the lawn edge. Extend the bump guard fully for even ground distance.
12.3 Mowing
Cutting height is determined by the distance of the cutting attachment from the ground. Swing the brushcutter steadily back and forth in an arc. Walk forward slowly. If using a bump guard (1), extend it fully. Observe recommended temperature ranges (20.6) for optimal performance.
12.4 Adjust the mowing lines on the AutoCut mowing heads
Briefly tap the rotating mowing head on the ground to advance about 30 mm of nylon line. The line limiting blade trims it to length. Automatic feed stops if lines are shorter than 25 mm. Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Press and hold the button on the mowing head, pull out the lines. If lines cannot be pulled out, install a new spool.
13 After Finishing Work

Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Allow the brushcutter to dry if wet. Allow the battery to dry if moist or wet (20.6). Clean the brushcutter, deflector, cutting attachment, and battery.
14 Transporting
14.1 Transporting the brushcutter
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Carry the brushcutter balanced by the shaft, with the cutting attachment behind you. Secure it in a vehicle to prevent turnover and movement.
14.2 Transporting the Battery
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Ensure the battery is in a safe condition. Pack it securely to prevent movement. Batteries are subject to dangerous goods regulations (UN 3480); consult transport regulations at www.stihl.com/safety-data-sheets.
14.3 Transporting the Charger
Disconnect the plug, remove the battery, wind up the connecting cable, and attach it to the charger. Transport in a bag or secure it to prevent movement. Do not use the connecting cable for carrying.
15 Storing
15.1 Storing the brushcutter
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Ensure it cannot tip or shift, is out of reach of children, and is clean and dry. For storage over 30 days, remove the cutting attachment.
15.2 Storing the blades
Up to 6 blades can be stored directly on the brushcutter. Attach a blade (1) to the underside of the brushcutter by pushing its tip into the opening (2). Fit subsequent blades on top.
15.3 Storing the Battery

16 Cleaning
16.1 Cleaning the Brushcutter
Switch off the brushcutter and remove the battery. Clean with a damp cloth. Remove foreign objects from the battery compartment and clean it. Clean electrical contacts with a paintbrush or soft brush. Clean under the fanwheel with a soft brush.
16.2 Cleaning the Deflector and Cutting Attachment
Switch off the trimmer and remove the battery. Clean the deflector and cutting attachment with a damp cloth or soft brush.

Clean the battery with a damp cloth.
16.4 Cleaning the Charger
Disconnect the mains plug. Clean the charger with a damp cloth. Clean electrical contacts with a paintbrush or soft brush.

The trimmer, cutting attachment, battery, and charger are not user-serviceable. If damaged, do not use and contact a STIHL servicing dealer. Replace damaged batteries or chargers. Have damaged connecting cables replaced by a STIHL servicing dealer.

27 General Power Tool Safety Warnings
27.1 Introduction
This chapter reproduces general safety precautions from IEC 62841 for hand-held electric tools. STIHL is obliged to publish these. Safety precautions regarding electric shock under "Electrical Safety" do not apply to STIHL cordless products.
⚠️ WARNING: Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications. Failure to follow may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury. Save for future reference. "Electric power tool" refers to corded or battery-operated tools.
27.2 Work area safety
a) Keep the work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres (flammable liquids, gases, dust) as sparks can ignite them.
c) Keep children and bystanders away. Distractions can cause loss of control.
27.3 Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Do not modify plugs or use adapter plugs with earthed tools. b) Avoid body contact with earthed surfaces. c) Do not expose tools to rain or wet conditions. d) Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. e) Use outdoor-suitable extension cords. f) Use an RCD-protected supply in damp locations.
27.4 Personal safety
a) Stay alert, use common sense, do not operate when tired or under the influence of substances. b) Wear personal protective equipment: eye protection, dust mask, non-skid shoes, hard hat, hearing protection as appropriate. c) Prevent unintentional starting: ensure the switch is off before connecting power/battery, picking up, or carrying the tool.
27.5 Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the tool; use the correct tool for the application. b) Do not use if the switch malfunctions. c) Disconnect power/remove battery before adjustments, accessory changes, or storage. d) Store idle tools out of reach of children and do not let unfamiliar persons operate them. e) Maintain tools and accessories; check for misalignment, binding, or breakage. Have damaged tools repaired. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. g) Use tools and accessories according to instructions, considering working conditions. h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry and clean.
27.6 Battery tool use and care
a) Recharge only with the specified charger. b) Use only designated battery packs. c) Keep battery packs away from metal objects when not in use to prevent shorting. d) Avoid contact with ejected battery liquid; flush with water if contact occurs. e) Do not use damaged or modified battery packs. f) Do not expose battery packs or tools to fire or excessive temperatures (above 130°C). g) Follow charging instructions and do not charge outside specified temperature ranges.
27.7 Service
a) Have power tools serviced by qualified personnel using identical replacement parts. b) Never service damaged battery packs; only manufacturer or authorized providers should do so.
27.8 Lawn Trimmer and Lawn Edge Trimmer Safety Warnings
